Pulling: Episode #2.2 (2008)
Season 2, Episode 2
8/10
Paul Kaye
10 April 2024
Just a hysterical performance by him in this episode, one minute sober then making a dinner laced with alcohol with every course to ending up being rat arsed by the time he serves it up, think Keith Floyd but just on a different level entirely. Such a great comical performance, he plays drunk and off his t#ts so well.

The less said about the sex scene the better, funny but painful to watch. Such a wreck of a character.

The rest of the episode was fun. The flasher storyline was funny, played by Paul Ready (motherland) who was open and forward about his past, ready to tell everyone about it, unfortunately telling Billy who didn't take too kindly about his forwardness.

The Beekeeper (2024)
6/10
Bees buzzing
16 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not sure how many more stories Statham can rinse out that can give him the opportunity to play the hero seeking revenge against baddies. This time it's cyber thieves who just happen to take all the money from someone who he is renting a shed from where he looks after his bees. Very formulaic but it's watchable enough as the said baddies are made to be so unlikeable that you can't wait for Statham to mow them all down. The crazy woman beekeeper was a particular highlight. It turns comical (though for some that point may have been reached earlier) towards the end as a bunch of mercenaries are hired and allowed to mingle along side secret service at a gala event attended by the president. These mercenaries look like they've just walked out of hipsters clothing store on route to save an incredibly unlikeable scumbag that Statham's after. After literally spitting his words out the lead mercenary gets the odd hit in but eventually succumbs to Statham's dodgy US accent when he realises he only has one leg. All's well that ends well as Statham's slinks away into the sea having served up his ultimate revenge. Up next for Statham - back to the UK to play a retired ex military captain now postman who realises that his friend who runs his local post office has been stitched up by a Japanese tech giant who are in bed with the government. The Postman's Justice out in 2024.

Wonka (2023)
7/10
It fell short
19 December 2023
I can't put my finger on it, the film just lacked something for me, the music didn't hit the toe tapping quality it maybe could have. The songs over time might enter my most listened tunes for 2024 but interestingly the only time my ears pricked up were when I heard the notes towards the end for pure imagination. The set design and atmosphere were well done but didn't quite hit the magical notes you'd expect for Wonka. Olivia Coleman and Tom Davis were enjoyable but Wonka's sidekicks were sadly mostly forgettable. I enjoyed Keegan's ever increasing waistline over the film's length as he continued to sell himself out but would have liked a bit more menace from the three chocolatiers to offer a bit more jeopardy to the good guys.

Hugh Grant was enjoyable and could have been sprinkled in a bit more across the film. Chalamet performed the role admirably, I'm not sure you need to have the qualities of a Gene Kelly to act and sing on film to perform these sorts of roles so he coped well enough with what was required of him.

All in all a perfectly good 2 hours revisiting a children's classic and a welcome change from watching a string of below par superhero films.

Shetland: Episode #8.4 (2023)

Tedious
23 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is the issue I have with stories that span over seasons, they become tedious, one murder - amazingly everyone seems to be involved for a girl who hasn't been on the island for years, no-one wants to come forward with any information, like the sister in law. Seen the victim on the day of her murder but doesn't come forward for the poorest of reasons. Throw in red herrings (the drug side issue) which seems unconnected but tiringly will continue to be connected. It'll turn out to be the brother probably who had an issue with her when they were 10 and all the side stories will be pointless. This story isn't strong enough to span the season. It could have been a tight 3/4 parter.

The Hunger Games starring Dolly Parton
21 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Country and Western meets the Hunger Games with Dolly Parton in the starring role. Firstly this film is too long, I'm not sure the film needed the 3rd part, it could have been wrapped up and have created the antagonist Snow a lot quicker. Everyone played their parts perfectly well, Viola Davis was menacing enough when called for. A lot of the cast though just didn't have enough about them, and when they were chosen to be killed off whether they were tributes or otherwise it didn't hit any note of substance, you just moved on. Even Tyrion at the end, it was like oh well. Oh for a Stanley Tucci performance in this one. The oppulance off the city was missed as well.

Unnecessarily long
15 August 2023
Pacing is all off here, this film could have done with at least 20-30 minutes trimmed off. It sagged in the middle, can't really fault the actors here, they all did their bit. They were just dealing with a baggy script.. The effects were fine, the set was appropriately eerie and atmospheric. I would have liked to seen a bit more menace with the ghosts, gave them a bit more edge which would have avoided all the characters seen as safe and untouchable but still have the light hearted approach, along the lines of the Frighteners (directed by Peter Jackson). I know it's a 12a but the kids would have coped with it for sure.

It's all gone Pete Tong
15 June 2023
This film is pants, the script is rubbish, the transformers themselves except Mirage are okay. Did anyone read the Mirage lines and think this is great, he is great let's make him the focus, give him more. Having seen the actors 10 minutes in Fast X thought he's a natural let's make him front and center for this. Maybe they were filmed the other way round? How could it be made worse, let's chuck 2 unknown actors in there and when the script calls for them to be involved the whole thing will nose dive further, especially the plot. I feel the machines would have done better without them. Also why make Optimus Prime so weak for 95% of the film. Put this franchise to bed.

The Scooby Doo background of films
22 May 2023
There is 2 hours and 21 minutes of celluloid film that is broken down into 5/10 minutes of a "Family" scene followed by 5/10 minutes of cars screeching followed by 5/10 minutes of 2 characters fighting, insert a joke. Then we start again with 5/10 minutes of "Family" scenes then cars screeching then 2 different characters fighting, throw a joke in there and like it says on the back of a shampoo bottle rinse and repeat so were back again at "Family". Like watching Shaggy and Scoob running past the same plant/wardrobe/picture only there's no nitrous oxide in sight though you could argue the plot is a lot more complex in a Shaggy and Scoob adventure. Momoa has plenty of fun with his character, the Roman/Ramsey/Tej/Han plot is utterly pointless but you do get a significant word count on "Family" so not all is lost.

A Struggle
10 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A tough watch, it's a slow burn that just doesn't fire up or get going enough to keep the viewer interested. As many have said with the quality cast on board, though Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn has almost put me off watching her, you would have thought the screen would be lit up with a cracking plot and great performance. It doesn't, I could hear one bloke snoring further behind me. The demise of Taylor Swift's character was the most action we saw in the whole film. There was little action, no jeopardy, no real twists or turns of any note. A very flat film that I ended up wishing for it to end.

Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool in Red Notice
20 January 2022
Is he going to play the same character for the rest of his career. Gadot and Johnson are fine in this caper. The film is a good watch but Reynolds is beginning to do my head in, the laughs from his character are getting less and less as each film goes by.

Why remake the original
12 January 2022
Was the CGI purposefully done badly to tie in with the "let's just remake the original idea" because it was bad. This was 96 so many years after The Abyss or T2 for example so not as if they didn't have the tech. The story is the same, another twist at the end, same ridiculous OTT characters throughout, there's not much good to day about it tbh.

Erm ....
24 December 2021
Why does Neo look like John Wick or John Wick look like Neo.

Surely they could have given him a different look to his Wick character, kinda feels half hearted.

Also thinking the film wouldn't have lost anything without having Jada Smith in it, binned her scenes off, fitted her dialogue in elsewhere and saved everyone 20 odd minutes on the running time.

Halloween (1978)

Watched in 2021 for first time
19 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This film is not good, the plot is awful, the characters are simple. The music is the only good thing tbh. I couldn't get over the beginning where they see a inmate standing there so Donald gets out the car, the nurse has the window rolled down of course and allows Mikey to part strangle her. She drives 20m away doesn't roll the window up but gets out and allows Mikey to drive off all the while Donald is watching. It's all downhill after that. Mikey spends the next hour playing hide and seek while sounding like he's got breathing difficulties from having Covid 19. Donald is playing detective with all the grace of Chief Wiggum "hiding" outside his old house wearing a white raincoat hoping Mikey is going to show up. The last 20 odd minutes is where the action happens, Mikey takes forever killing 3 people and JLC uses her arts and crafts skills to take him down at least 3 or 4 times I think anyway, lost count. Thankfully Donald, having finally spotted Mikey's car (despite him being just down the road from it all night) legs it over to help JLC. Credits roll up. No suspense or tension just annoyance over Mikey taking ages killing, walking around do anything really. If you allow JLC about 15 minutes to get out of the kitchen despite being only 5 steps away then you deserve very little.

Finished S2, watched for the laughs only
7 September 2021
It's just an unbelievably painful watch which just becomes a comedy for being so bad the longer you watch it, JJ topped the list of who the biggest moron is for S1, Kiora wins that award for S2 and she's run very close, the level of disrespect she shows to the parents among other so many other things. Some of the annoying things are Ward Cameron speaks in hushed tones continually (speak normally you clown). John B is continually called John B by everyone at all times, despite most others caleed by a shortened name or nickname. The S1 gold is abandoned for different S2 gold. Rafe, a complete moron who should have been thrown into the lake when he was a baby. Rafe's druggie mate bro this, bro that, Pope and there just a few of them.

What is Elizabeth Mitchell doing in this, she is much better than this dross.

A Horror on many levels
31 August 2021
For a horror film it's not scary whatsoever, there's better films out there if your after a scare to your senses. As for the other elements it's not worth your time, not worthy of interest. One to avoid in all honesty.

Painful characters
20 August 2021
Not even finished the first episode and the character of JJ is just incredibly dense. A moronic character of huge proportions. Which doesn't say much for the other characters who go along with everything.
