Johnny Mnemonic (1995)
I have rarely seen a movie that missed the mark so far.
What happened with this movie? What a great premise it had.
How did it miss the mark so far? My sister and I see any movie
Keanu Reeves makes without much regard for the content or what
character he plays. We have decided the problem was the budget.
All the cast and crew members must have put in their $1.50, and
that was all the money available. I just don't get it. Here was a
great mystery and scifi combination that could have been
incredibly engrossing, it could have sucked you in and kept you on
the edge of your seat during the entire running time. Instead, I
spent the whole time wondering what it was they had in mind. I
stayed for the entire length of the movie hoping it would become
what it promised to be. Finally, in the last 5 minutes, it lived up to
it's potential. Too little, too late. I want the time and money I
wasted back!!
Kiss Me Goodbye (1982)
This was one of the funniest movies I have ever seen
When I saw this movie, I laughed out loud. The bedroom scene
where she is talking it her dead husband while her fiance is
attempting to make love to her is priceless. This has added the
phrase "they're my Aunt Edna's' to my lexicon of phrases when
there is a missed communication going on around me. Only real
movie fans get it but it still cracks me up. The title song, I think it
was sung by Dusty Springfield, is one of the lost classics. Maybe
you have to be a woman to understand how well it fits the movie,
Kate and Jolly are both sorry that it went so fast; that he died and
she still hasn't gotten over it; that she will marry a man who loves
her and try get on with life in the home where Jolly lived, died and,
apparently, still lives. There is no scene which misses the hilarity
mark. I had to search all over to find this movie, but I watch it from
time to time and 20 years later, I am still laughing and singing that
song. Sally Field, James Caan and Jeff Bridges, bravo!! I love it!!!
American Dreamer (1984)
Hilarious, endearing, brave, warm, surprising
I first saw this movie on cable and was completely impressed. How did I miss this movie in the theatre? I LOVE mysteries. And this is one. It is also a comedy, drama and love story with a twist. Or two. The characters are well defined and grow. With the slight exception of Giancarlo Giannini, who is a intentionally one dimensional but beautiful to look at, just the same.
The heroine gets trapped in a mystery lover's dream scenario. She enters a contest to write a chapter for a book about her favorite detective and wins! Then bravely take the trip she wins alone because her husband thinks little of her effort or talent and does his best to stifle her joy. She feels a little guilty but tries to have a good time. She is definitely on the "if this is Tuesday, it must be Belgium" tour. While being rushed through the sites of Paris, she is robbed and hit by a car. Resulting in amnesia. When she wakes up she has become her favorite character. In Paris. On a shopping spree. Involved in an unsuspected plot to save the world.
It is fabulous to watch all the other people who are caught up in her dilemma because she really is lost but convincing they try to help but keep getting pulled in deeper. Then her husband is told she is missing. The plot thickens. There really are double agents, drug dealers, a chase scene (running), underground passages, ghost writers. No one is what or who they seem to be. And just when you think everything has been concluded, she gets kidnapped. That was the best moment. The director could have ended the movie exactly there and I would have felt complete. But wait, there's more. The game was still afoot!!
This movie was great!! It is everything you want from a movie. Starting with entertainment. Not predictable. Some real thinking and smart people doing everything right. But once the ball started rolling, it had to finish. Best of all, every one in the family could watch it. It was smart and clean. At this point I have seen it so many times since the 80's I can sing the theme song.
Dracula (1979)
This is the sexiest Dracula ever made.
Having seen almost all the Dracula and vampire movies ever made, I have to say this one is my modern favorite. I never understood why all those women went so willingly with Bela Lugosi. I mean, he scares me to death. But Frank Langella. Well. What can I say? He's so beautiful and suave, I started taking iron just in case he dropped by for a sip. About 1 hour into the movie is the sexiest scene I have ever watched. And there is NO nudity. All the women I know who have seen this movie know exactly where and when this scene is. Anything else that needs to taken care of is done BEFORE this scene plays. It is always very quiet while it plays and we always watch that it more than once.
Dracula (1931)
One of the scariest movies I ever saw.
I first saw this film on TV when I was 12 or 13 years old and it scared me so much that I wore a crucifix around my neck every day after that until I was 20. I watch it whenever I see it is being broadcast and every so often I take the video out and watch it again. I am still looking for it on DVD. I have seen almost all of the other Dracula and vampire films and judge them all by this one. It still takes first prize for eerieness.
