IF (2024)
Disjointed attempt for depth and moving moment
I'm disappointed in this movie not because it's absolutely terrible but because it could have been much better a properly written story.
While there are some funny moments and kind of moving scenes, they're all tied along by a incredibly weak and barebones story, many moments are melodramatic just for the sake of it without earning them, as such the film feels hollow and disjointed.
The story as a whole feels like a reject Pixar movie, the impressive cast is mainly cameos, and even Steve Carrell who has more time, barely feels like it has much heart in it. Most of the funny moments are already in the trailers.
Boku no hîrô akademia THE MOVIE: Wârudo Hîrôzu Misshon (2021)
Perfectible serviceable anime tie-movie but nothing else
The animation, voice acting and music are all great and don't disappoint.
The movie is solid and tries to flesh out their center character and explore another facet of what it means to be a hero and build up in the themes of the anime/manga, it's just that the build up is not really treating new ground or themes that the main series doesn't do already for the most part.
All in all the movie is entertaining but one can't help but feeling a little disappointing after coming off Heroes Rising, overall as far as anime movies go, this one is good, it's just not a breakthrough.
If I'm to nitpick there are two particular issues that hampered my enjoyment, the villain's defeat comes about by simple PLUS ULTRA, which although it's not bad, it would have been great to see Deku come up with an strategy to defeat him, and see his thought process through it, as I feel it's one of the things that make Deku special.
Second, one has to push really hard at how the events of the movie don't immediately have an impact in the canon of the world, from Deku and company literally saving the world having no repercussions, to the glaring fact no more powerful international heroes (Star...) joined to stop the thread.
Also, the promotional art with the stealth costumes feels like a rip off given that they use them for no more than five minutes.
