El hoyo (2019)
An attempt at being clever
The writers had a nice idea of portraying socialism as the cure for the cancer eating out society that is capitalism and glorified consumption. As gutsy as that premises sounds, it's doable as long as you have a capable storyteller behind it. This movie does not - it feels like something straight out of a junior high graduate, so sure that he has every aspect of life figured out. This movie is full of cliches, gross oversimplifications of serious issues, characters acting in unbelievable ways, so far from what an actual human being might do it breaks my suspension of disbelief. Overall - a pretentious mess trying to be more than it is.
Westworld (2016)
Stop at season 1
The show is a victim of its own success - season one was brilliant, filled with suspense and intrigue with an underlying theme connecting it all. You got to explore the growth of each character, their journey and development in a very meaningful way. It all concluded in a satisfying ending leaving lots of possibilities open - unfortunately, here is where the problems begin. The show should have ended there, with some of the story untold rather than ineptly explored by, what I can only assume, is a B crew of replacement writers, missing the intrigue, wit and theme that made Westworld, well, Westworld. If you don't want your experience ruined in a Game of Thrones fashion, stop watching after the first season. It only gets exponentially worse.
Patton Oswalt: I Love Everything (2020)
A bit disappointed
I liked earlier material by Oswalt but this special just feels like an attempt at scoring woke points or something he had to pump out in a rush to fill his bank account. Nothing is really inspired, there is no general theme connecting the bits leading to a payoff at the end and the tired old "orange man bad" skit is obligatory, as the #MeToo endorsement. It all just feels a bit forced while not delivering any laughs except the jab at Louis CK which I thought was the only "blow-air-out-my-nose-louder-than-usual" funny part. Pass this one unless you're a hardcore Oswalt fan.
Bob Rubin: Oddities and Rarities (2020)
Painfully unfunny
I was redirected to this special after the Patton Oswalt one, and boy do I want my 10 minutes back. Rubin's routine is based on playing a madman spitting nonsense in an incoherent string of word which he nails. If that sounds like something you like - go for it. For me, an hour of furiously screaming nonsense by someone who clearly overindulged on hard drugs back in his prime was just... overwhelming.
Adam Sandler: 100% Fresh (2018)
No sense or structure, it's just Adam Sandler and his one-liners
Man, this was tough for me to watch. The first few minutes in I was surprised but decided to wait for the comedy or storytelling bit to start - sadly it never did.
It feels like a lump of old material Sandler had found in a drawer and said "hey, there's money to be made here!". With the amount of good standup routines available now, with a compelling story, laughs and above all, a point to be made, this is just a waste of time.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
A political statement from start to finish
It dug a shallow grave for the Star Wars legacy and spit on it. Luke is nothing like a Jedi, there is no reason for several of the things happening in the movie and men are portrayed as testosterone-fuelled trigger happy monkeys.
To top that off most of the comic relief feels as if it was aimed at younger audiences and ruins the very few serious undertones the movie successfully manages to sneak in.
If you're looking for a CGI extravaganza - go for it.
If you want a Star Wars film - definitely pass or you'll be left with a bad aftertaste, like I was.
The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009)
If you have nothing to say - just shock the audience.
That should be the tag line. I took the time to write this review just out of pure disgust - this movie has no real plot, no characters you can relate to.
Every single character that appears in this movie is a bag of meat to introduce more gore - no personality, no background story. If you think this is bad enough, there is more coming.
This movie does not explore the human psyche, doesn't focus on the question how far will you go in order to survive, doesn't even focus on fear itself - it's far from any actually interesting topic that might be an inspiration for a real script.
Only things you'll find here are disgusting, deeply disturbing scenes serving no other purpose than to shock the viewers. Tom Six really gave no thought writing this film, you can feel this every minute you're wasting watching it. One gruesome idea and that's it.
Don't throw away 92 minutes of your life watching this.
