Aruvi (2016)
Aruvi - Start of life
Nothing is there in this movie to dislike, this movie is everything about love.
May be in the first half some scenes are unclear to us, like some scenes are ending abruptly but at the end everything becomes clear not only about the movie but about our life.
There are only very few movies as good as Aruvi in Tamil cinema which preaches about humanity.
This movie reminded me Ikiru, eventhough both the movies are totally different.
A must watch.
Whiplash (2014)
Whiplash is enthralling from the first frames to the final curtain.
Wow..wow wow wow Truly humbled and awed on seeing this film. Soo here goes the review:
A devoted Buddy Rich fan with stellar ambitions, Andrew is relentless like no drummer Fletcher has ever taught and the bullet-headed Fletcher is distinctly evocative of Full Metal Jacket's foul-mouthed, bullying and merciless drill instructor, Sergeant Hartman. Fletcher eschews jazz improvisation for impossibly strict cadences and tempos. And when he asks the band to meet for practice at 9 am, he will enter the room at that very second. Andrew is no slouch in the determination department - he dumps his sweet girlfriend (Benoist) to focus on playing and play he does, till his hands bleed. It's a battle played out with hatred and respect. It's no surprise that Fletcher sees talent in Andrew and wants to coax it out, and Andrew's obsession with being the best makes his conductor's approval his solitary aim.Whiplash is never about anything other than its two leads however, and the pay-off is extraordinary, a final scene more exciting than any offered up by any big budget blockbuster in recent memory.
There are very few good movies about music. By that, I don't mean musicals nor do I mean films with musicians as actors playing their own work (The Beatles' A Hard Day's Night). I mean films with musicians as serious dramatic subjects, dealing with their passion for art and the pressures of performance. Movies that deal with why people dedicate their lives to music, despite the uncertainty of career expectations, the constant expectations of performance and the demands it makes on their family and love lives. Whiplash does evoke this theme and dramatize it well despite all its regrettable missteps in narrative and characterization.
The casting of the film is also a key to its success. Miles Teller is a gem of a find — his desperation, sweat and blood are all hyper realistic. Every time he struggles to hit the drums you feel lucky you don't have to be in his place. Simmons certainly deserves Oscar for best supporting actor. Seldom do we see characters in cinema that are so powerful. His bald headed black-attired mere presence is threatening, thanks to those condescending eyes and deep voice. Every time he looks at you it feels like he is going to hit you, and yet you feel like you have to live up to his expectations.
Young filmmaker Damien Chazelle has set himself a very high standard here by trying to create the atmospherics of the military school in Full Metal Jacket in a music school of all places. Before Whiplash, a music school in our heads would have triggered images of peace-loving harmless musicians gently punching out tunes out of a piano or bespectacled geeks lost in their violins. Chazelle succeeds admirably in reflecting the tension between students and teacher. The subtext also underlines the importance of being kind rather than abusive.
Slick editing with quick cuts and intense montage lead to the final concert at the Carnegie Hall where Andrew plays an extended powerhouse drum solo. Never mind the jazz standards, what makes WHIPLASH worth the watch is the excellent editing, camera-work and above all, the acting.
Whiplash is enthralling from the first frames to the final curtain.
Fast & Furious 7 (2015)
A tribute to Paulwalker
One of the most expected movie of the season and didn't disappoint mainly because of stunt choreography and of course Paul Walker.
The plot of this film is just an excuse for some of the best car chase/action scenes recently seen on screen. But then, plot and story is not what you go in expecting when you sign up for a fast and Furious film. You go for men who are men doing stuff you thought laws of physics did not allow, you went for big cars and pretty girls in itsy-bitsy nothings and campy fun. You get a taste of what's to come in the beginning, when Shaw and Dom, much like two testosterone-fuelled bulls, ram their cars into each other head-on. No one backs away; no one bats an eyelid. They then step out of their mangled metal steeds and almost come to blows before Dom is rescued by Frank, who calls himself 'Mr Nobody'. A deal is struck: Dom and his crew will help Frank nab the terrorist Jakande (Hounsou, with some ridiculous lines) and the 'God's Eye' device and in return, Dom can use the device to locate Shaw. Ludicrous is spot-on as the jester, whose cringing caution is a great counterfoil to the rampant machismo on display. The Rock packs some serious weaponry.
At its most basic, a Fast and Furious movie is as weird and contagious as—and more large-hearted than—a Top Gear episode. This one is a blockbuster with smack-you-in-your-face set pieces, death-defying stunts, muscle cars, family-first ethos, ridiculous one-liners which get all the taalis and an apology of a plot.
The extreme action and explosions in the film come interspersed with emotional moments. A funeral scene where the crew is bidding goodbye to a fallen comrade is especially moving given Walker's death. The send-off to Walker's character is so subtle and real that it leaves your eyes moist. Not that you notice too much, with his brothers Caleb and Cody, plus some computer trickery, filling in the gaps.It just feels natural that this glass-shattering, asphalt-breaking film should end so poignantly. Because after cars have been smashed and big-ticket weaponry unleashed, it is really about family, friendship and loss.
Demonte Colony (2015)
Engaging horror film
The word "horror" has become increasingly cheap in today's Tamil cinema with every week has a horror movie waiting to be released.Even though Muni stared it all its because of Pizza we are having whole lots of horror movies in Tamil cinema in last 5 or 6 years. Except 3 or 4 films remaining are mostly disappointing mainly because of Masala approach by not giving importance to the script and story. But this is where Demonte colony differ from other movies.
The story starts When four friends after getting drunk in a bar, decide to do something interesting and eventually break into a terrifying bungalow in Demonte Colony which is believed to be possessed by spirits. The next morning when they return home, a chilling turn of events takes them hostage and puts everyone's life at jeopardy. Will they come out of these unanticipated circumstances alive? This forms the rest of the story.
The movie doesn't have large cast so no place for female lead and comedians but the cast has done great job with their performance. Arulnithi again does an excellent job. He has a knack for choosing a good script hope he continues to choose good script in his future projects . All 3 other male friends with significant screen space also stand out.
Director Ajay Gnanamuthu has done great job with the script, though he takes time in establishing characters, things speed up once they enter the bungalow.Brilliantly written and well executed.
Cinematography by Aravind Singh is excellent. All the scenes are well shot with good color tone, angles and light. The way single room is captured with vivid lighting are absolutely brilliant.
Although BGM is unbearable in some scenes Keba Jeremiah has done good job with BGM.
While you will see some resemblance to 1408 and The Sixth sense it doesn't stop it from enjoying the movie. So if you got a chance to see the movie don't miss it.Best horror movie of the season
The Conjuring (2013)
Wanna play hide and clap...
For last the past 5 month I didn't watch any horror even in TV channels. My friends who went to "The Conjuring" advised me that "If You miss it You will regret" and also I am a fan of James Wan's works catch ed the movie this evening and I must tell you I didn't regret watching it.
When I watched the trailer of this movie it had everything that other Horror movie had A Farm House near a lake, dark Cellar and wooden doll. Well what do you know, this movie its not any other horror movie with lot of VFX sh*t. Its an old-school horror film.
Man some of the scenes scared sh*t out of me.Especially the scene where Carolyn was stuck in the Cellar and asked to play Hide and clap game, also the following scenes of Christine being dragged from the Bed.Every character were amazing in the movie.
This movie doesn't revolutize horror films, yes who have watched most of the scary moments in other films but you will realize these things only after watching the whole movie. Both plus and minus of the movie is its old- school scare.
Is this film is the greatest horror movie. No its not.But I Don't remember last time when I actually enjoyed watching a Horror film. Not only its scary but also well crafted one.Music is good paced well with the story
What makes it hit is its not a loud, bloody, gory way most Hollywood horror films do.Its quite and subtle ways makes it Hit, but it will receive some -ve review due to its predictability narration.
It will be one of my Top 10 horror movies. It may not be a good as The Exorcist or Evil Dead(I am an Evil Dead Fan) but its way better than most of the movies. I would say its actually better than The Amityville Horror and Poltergeist.
Neram (2013)
Simply Good
I came to know Neram from one of my malayali friend, she had the malayali version of the song "Kadhal Ennulle" in her mobile. First I didn't know the movie was going to be released in Tamil till the "Pistah" song hit the YouTube, and I was impressed how it was made. Later went to the movie not expecting anything. But began to expect something after seeing "I copy from every movie ever made -Quentin Tarantino - I Agree to this - Alphonse Putharaen(Director)" in the Intro and also the dedications.
Okay now about story, since you must have heard or googled the story by now so i don't want to go discuss it here. You must of thought its not a new one(the story), well I must agree with you but let me tell you, only the story is bit old everything else are fresh including the cast.
About the cast now,as far the character The one who stole the spot light in this movie is certainly not anyone but everyone .Nivin Pauly hero of the movie has every quality to be One of the Top Hero but it depends on his future projects. Mostly he was good in the movie expect few scenes were he was not convincing. Now about heroine,I wanted to watch the movie because of Nazriya Nazim and I think you must have felt that too.She is a fresh face to Tamil cinema and I believe she will be a hit among the Tamil audience. She is adorable and has a good screen presence in the movie but not much of a role to excel in the movie.Simha,Nassar, John Vijay and Thambi Ramaiah like always has done a good job especially I loved Nassar's role which is short and quirky one.
The Main plus of the movie is its Non-linear screenplay and its editing. Alphonse has done a Commentable job.Camera has been well handled by Anand Chandran.Music by Rajesh Murugesan, songs are lovable & pleasant and BGM was apt to the scenes.
The verdict. Will I recommend this movie to My friends? Yes I will. Even if it lacks some of the ingredients to be the Best,it will be one of the best Tamil Movie of 2013. It is one of the those movie which you can enjoy on first watch and. Alphonse is good addition to the Tamil Cinema which is experiencing a good wave of Directors and gives us a confidence we can expect good projects not only from Big Names but also from new comers.
This is a good NERAM for Tamil Cinema.
Thadaiyara Thaakka (2012)
Praiseworthy
Just seen this movie with my friends after hearing good reviews from media and I am not disappointed. When the movie started it reminded me of Rowthiram and fortunately it don't after some time.
The movie has a very good plot and some nice performance, especially from Arun vijay.Mamta got a meaty role in the film and has some nice romantic moments with Arun. The first half is really good.It will never bores you(expect for that item song).
But what stops the movie from being best are average second half, some predictable and inconsistent with its scenes.oh well it can happens in this kind of complex plot.
Magizh Thirumeni has done good job could have been better.Thaman has given a couple of soulful melodies. All in all job well done.
Verdict:Worth its money.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
Greatest Trilogy Ever
OK there are already more that 1500 reviews, almost all of them are +ve reviews so I just reviews this movie for the sake my name to be displayed in this movies review list.
The Dark knight Rises one of the most anticipated movie of the year.It deserves these kind of reception after the level of success achieved by Batman Begins & The Dark Knight and it delivers in every way.Its bigger than biggest. Its darker than darkest. Its never fails to surprise you.
The performance of the characters are Super Fantastic each of them giving their best performance. Tom Hardy has given an absolute mind blowing performance even when his half face was covered by a Mask.As far Bale his best outing as Masked Man and also as Bruce. With support cast of Morgan Freeman,Gary Oldman,Joesph Gordon-Hewitt and Cat burglar Anne Hathway we cant expect any less.No please don't compare them to Joker(Heath Ledger) after all they are just mortals.
Nolan is absolute genius, with David S. Goyer he has given a great story coupled with a great screenplay. The soundtrack by Hans Zimmer is astonishing as always especially Banes voice(first criticized as -ve impact in story) will send chillness to the spine you can feel the darkness in the voice itself.
The Dark Knight rises is in every way matches its predecessor The Dark Knight, but we cant ignore that we misses Joker so much, but its not fair just to keep on expecting anything like Joker.
And Finally The Dark Knight Rises finishes with fantastic climax putting an end to one of the Greatest Trilogy ever.
Uthiri Pookkal (1979)
Evergreen & Extraordinary
Frankly saying I don't know who is Mahendran before 2011 yet I have seen the movies Mullum Mallarum,Johnny,Nandu with Mullum Mallarum being one of my fav Movie. Finally i got to see this movie(UthiriPookal) with the help of My friend. After watching the movie i was frustrated with my self why didn't i watched this movie till now(2011).
Everything in this movie is a masterclass be it Story or Screenplay or Performance or BGM everything.
Vijayan who is the lead of the movie has done a great job carrying the role of Sundaravadivelu with ease and remember it is a negative lead character. The movie also has a good support cast with likes of Charuhassan,Sharathbabu and Ashwini.
Soundtrack are as usual a great one from Raja sir especially the Song Azhagiya Kanne is simply amazing. Though the film don't depend on the music, raja sir BGM doesn't affect the film in any way & combined well with the characters & story.
Mahendran the man whom i didn't know till 2011 gave this film which is still a "Benchmark for Tamil Cinema", what he done with Uthiripookal is still unbelievable. The way of story is distinct from other Indian Movies. The Story with a village background and a negative character, still you cant find a blood or violence in the movie.Slow but steady and ends with a heart breaking climax. It is one of my Top 5 Tamil movies of All time.
This movie is Highly Recommended so don't miss it.
Deiva Thirumagal (2011)
Should be credited for the performance
Wow..this my response after watching this film.
Even though it is an another ripoff of Hollywood it should be credited for the strong performance by the characters especially Vikram and Sara.
If you didn't watch "I AM SAM" means you can enjoy this films because there were lot of scenes which will reminds you "I AM SAM".
Vikram has done a fabulous job as Krishna carrying the title role with ease but its Sara who stole the spot light with performance of Nila who is cute & charming with her performance.Anushka,Nasser and Santhanam excels in their roles.
Nivarshah cinematography is excellent capturing the beauty of Ooty.GV Prakash has done a pretty good job with Songs and BGM.
Director vijay has done a good job in developing the story in Indian style but cant erase the traces of I AM SAM.
Totally the movie is awesome with some solid performances from the whole cast and job well done by Deivathirumagal team.
Mouna Guru (2011)
Don't Miss It
Its my first review for a Tamil Movie and I am Happy that its start with Mouna Guru.
Mouna Guru a well crafted thriller by the débutant Santha Kumar starring Arulnithi,John Vijay, Uma Riyaz with some notable actors and some new faces.
From the first scene itself you can guess its not a normal Tamil film unfortunately that will be you last guess also.Lead character Karunakaran is not a average college going boy, He does what he wants to do and does it alone. After series of incidents he was sent to his brothers home in Chennai to persuade in a city college. That's where the film takes a twist, then many incidents comes in his way.How Karunakaran handle the situations and what happened to him in the end were narrated in a edge-on-seat thriller manner.
Arulnithi done a perfect job by choosing a role that will be apt for him.He shine during the scenes where he struggles to prove his innocence after being labeled as mentally unstable .It will be a huge relief for him after a lukewarm response for his 2nd film Udhayan. Santhakumar, the director has put all his best efforts in his debut venture and he has proved that he is a filmmaker from whom we can expect more. His script and narration says it all.Johy Vijay(Dirty Cop Marimuthu) and Uma Riyaz(police officer Palaniammal) both done a commendable job with there performance.Supporting Shantakumar's racy screenplay is Thaman's background scores, which fits the story perfectly.Overall a good Job done by Mouna Guru Team.
Plus:Screenplay,Characterization, Performance and Background Score.
Minuses:Slow moments in second half, unwanted portions could have been avoided
