Light & Magic (2022)
Special and affecting
A beautiful series of episodes that show how ILM grew as a family. Yes, the technology is fascinating and the 'can do' attitude is humbling but what's delightful to observe is the humanity at the heart of the story. For me, the star of the show is Phil Tippett who pioneered so much yet was himself required to change as the industry around him was transformed. His admission to how it affected him was both courageous and touching. That he retained an important place in a world that was turning upside down is testament to his character. Rightfully, he has the last word in the final episode.
This series alone has justified my Disney + subscription.
Belfast (2021)
A Faultless retrospective of the Troubles
A beautifully written, directed, shot and performed piece which exposes the tensions of a City through the eyes of a little boy.
The period is wonderfully brought to life through the costumes and sets. As a child of the sixties myself, everything about the production was authentic.
Personally, I could find no fault in it and was completely absorbed in the emotional journey of each character.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
What did I miss?
I know that everyone else seems to have enjoyed this film, but I don't understand why. I found myself without a care for any of the main characters. The villains were dredged up from previous movies, the heroes were two dimensional (with the usual exception of Dr Strange, brought to life by Benedict Cumberbatch) and the action sequences, although spectacular, were no more so than any previous blockbuster.
I can only guess that if you like Spider-Man, he can do no wrong but this movie really failed to do anything for me.
It's a pity because I was really looking forward to it.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
You reap what you sow
Those reviewers who have disliked this movie have possibly failed to grasp the true story. This isn't a simple tale of four characters thrown together... there's a sinister and complex plot at play which, I think, lots of viewers have missed because they didn't invest in the movie. Yes, it's slow because it's character driven. But give the clever plot a chance and you'll be richly rewarded.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Someone actually wrote this
It's hard to believe that someone somewhere sat at their keyboard and created this mess of a movie... worse still that someone else put money into it. Thank goodness I watched this on a streaming service and didn't pay money to see it at a cinema.
Cold Pursuit (2019)
A Tarantino movie, without any Tarantino magic
This is a movie that can't decide what it is - remake or original, serious or slapstick, Fargo or Reservoir Dogs. How so many talented actors became involved in this is a mystery - did none of them read the script before turning up on set?
When there are so many great scripts out there, you wonder why someone would bankroll such a dog's breakfast of a movie.
Line of Duty: Episode #6.7 (2021)
Underwhelming? Definately, mate.
Too much pressure on a great writer to pull something new and fresh out of the bag after so long. Poor wee donkey.
