Battleship (2012)
Plenty of Promise, But Ultimately Disappoints
For a film that starts off with such promise, this was an utter disaster. There was absolutely no character development or even a distinct plot at all. The story line kept jumping around to make this movie very confusing. It also uses just about every action movie cliché in the book. If you are going to see a Liam Neeson masterpiece, STAY AWAY. Neeson has a pathetic amount of screen time for being such a huge star. The acting is sub-par at best. Most of the emotions seemed forced and unnatural and was quite disturbing throughout the film. The action scenes are much like those in the Transformer movies, but not nearly as exciting or thrilling. The movie wraps up far too quickly and gives a very non-satisfying ending. There is some inappropriate language used in the movie, but that is about the only reason it should be rated PG-13 because the action scenes are not overly intense. Overall a very promising film that sadly disappoints.
How I Met Your Mother: Tick Tick Tick (2011)
Shockingly Real
Other than the episode where Marshal's dad dies I thought this was the most real episode on the show. The writers are at the point in the series where they know that the long time viewers have a real connection with the show's characters and they are taking advantage of it. For 6 seasons we have known Barney as the guy with a string of one night stands and fear of any commitment. Robin was the first person to ever get him to commit so it makes sense that he still has a connection with her. Personally I have never wanted Barney and Robin to end up together. I really liked Barney with Nora and thought she was "the one." But that's not how life always works and the writers clearly want to portray that to the audience. For the sake of the viewers who do not follow the show they still kept this episode surprisingly light, I found myself laughing throughout most of the episode. But the end of the show (once again) was a shock to me. The fact that Barney was able to admit what he did to Nora and that Robin and Kevin stayed together was not at all what I was expecting. I don't think Barney has ever looked as vulnerable as he did at the end of this show. The writers are finally making him easier to relate with and I can't wait to see what they do with the rest of the season.
How I Met Your Mother: Disaster Averted (2011)
Finally...
Finally an episode from season 7 that makes me want to continue watching the rest of the season. HIMYM is my favorite TV show but I was starting to lose faith. Season 7 has been moving very slow with the story line and the humor has been only okay at best. This was by far the best episode yet.
Personally I am not a fan of Kal Penn. I mean sure, he makes a great Kumar, but quite frankly I'm getting a little sick of him. Having a therapist as a part of their group does make sense in this episode, however, with Barney's made up story of how he "lost" the ducky tie. I was very impressed with how they incorporated this, but I think it is about time to get rid of Kal Penn.
Hurricane Irene plays a big part in this episode. The writers tend to keep the show as current as possible, which I am sure most people appreciate. I was more intrigued by the character development in this episode more than anything. It was clear from the beginning of the season that Robin was either not completely over Barney or her feelings are resurfacing. I thought it was very clear that this would be the main story for quite some time, but then Robin started dating Kevin. I was a little annoyed when they took the focus off Robin's secret love merely because I knew they would find a way to bring it back. And sure enough, they did.
The end of the episode was a complete shock to me. Barney has finally fallen in love and I was ready for his character to change permanently. Apparently the writers had other plans.
I hope I am not the only one who remembers this next part. It takes place in season 6 episode 21 titled "Hopeless." Robin runs into a her secret crush but Ted ruins it for her. At the end of the episode it shows her crush talking on the phone saying "So that's the end of that" and future Ted says "It wasn't, but more on that later." I really hope the writers stick to this promise, I have been waiting for a sign all season.
Overall I think this was a solid episode and will hopefully lead into another great season of HIMYM.
