Immortals (2011)
What an amazing......waste of celluloid!!!
And if you thought the summary of my review was misleading, wait till you get to see the actual picture based on what you expect from the movie trailer!
Having said that, kudos to the editors that created the trailer - they did a masterful job in promoting a movie on all aspects that would interest fans of this film genre and which in reality exist only in the few instances contained within the trailer.
I never thought I would write a review for a movie in IMDb, but having just watched this I felt compelled to warn other possibly interested moviegoers to avoid wasting their time, money as well as to avoid a definite insult on their sense of aesthetics and whatever knowledge they may have of ancient Greek mythology.
If you don't have any knowledge about ancient Greek mythology you won't get anything of greal value from this movie either.
I went without expecting to see a historical documentary, but rather to be at least entertained - especially by the 3-D and modern technology that could have brought into life the incredible fight between the Olympian gods and the Titans. The movie proved to be consistent until the very end (when the "fight" takes place) - consistent in being a big disappointment.
This is a bad copycat of the "300" movie in terms of style, pace, dialogue, costumes and fight scenes - in almost everything (if not everything).
The fight scenes turned out to be boring, predictable and almost exactly identical both in choreography sequence and film angle as those of the "300" movie. There were instances where the choreography of the fights was so overtly protracted in time and so badly filmed that the scenes looked annoyingly fake and over-the-top and I was half-expecting to see the ropes pulling the stunt men away from the lead characters.
Costumes in a few cases were acceptable but in most of the movie scenes they ranged from kitsch to totally ludicrous.
I wasn't expecting much of a dialogue, but the "motivational" parts of it were anything but that and, in what were supposed to be crucial, soul-wrenching moments for the characters, it was pompous, pointless and predictable.
Music, photography and graphics almost the same as in "300".
I gave the movie 3 stars.
One is due to Mickey Rourke - definitely worth watching. Even in this mess of a movie his talent shines through, as he gives a very convincing performance of the "ultimate bad guy who turned bad because he was wronged and is still in pain".
One more is for John Hurt - his subtle acting is so calming amidst the general lack of focus and cohesion of the movie that it instigates the hope that the movie will get better (if only this was true).
The third star is shared between Stephen Dorff and Luke Evans for bringing colour and interest to such drab cliché parts.
I left the cinema feeling I had just witnessed the enactment on film of the childhood fantasy game of boys who, due to their excitement and pride for the history and mythology of their ancestors, and in an effort to impress others, had created their own utterly confused version of world mythology, where ancient Greek heroes, semi-gods and gods meet the creatures and characters from "Lord of the Rings," fall in love with, lust for and chase Scheherazade from the "One thousand and one Arabian nights", and end up fighting for power just like in the "Mahabharata" epic.
It could have been an incredible piece of movie magic.
It was not.
It actually made the 60's movies (e.g. Jason and the Argonauts) look like wonderfully classic, worthwhile-watching films.
It is a very good example of how not to meddle with perfection in the storyline and how not to copy blindly a successful movie.
