Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
What the hell is wrong with you people?
I've just watched it and I can't believe how great this movie is. What is wrong with you people? The story is tight, solid and completely canon. It was by far the best action of all the franchise. So you never knew that this could happen? What if it's an all female cast, what's wrong with that? The villain is bad-ass enough, it's tougher than any previous incarnation, the plot is perfect and all the characters are human and flawed. Go grow a pair if you're so insecure. There's no woke agenda and I'm more "Conservative" (Republican) than anybody I know and I loved this movie.
Ad Astra (2019)
If you liked Solaris 2002 this is for you
If EVERYONE is hating it means it's REALLY GOOD. But you do need a higher than average I and level of sensitivity to get it. Forget to "science-proof" and enjoy it. The vibe, pace and amazing soundtrack, the highly polished performance of Brad Pitt does an awesome job for this unique movie, the kind you only see every 10 years or so. The way he's focused and pragmatic shows that humans can evolve inwards, to better propel ourselves into the Cosmos, united. "We don't want other worlds, we want mirrors" Gibarian
The Forbidden Room (2015)
Hypno inducing and dreamy
It is impossible to talk about the movie without mentioning the ongoing project Seances dot nfb dot ca. What can you say... It's Guy Madding, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, so expect to be in a trance for two hours. The amazing soundtrack will put anyone to sleep (which is not a bad thing!). I tend to disagree with some viewers when they comment that the movie is "non-linear". I find it to be absolutely linear, with it's nested stories driving you towards a path that is much like a dream, if you could actually recall one. A story within a story, within a story... But its absolutely perfectly structured, with a beginning middle and end for each story. I recommend watching multiple times, preferably in bed just before going to sleep. You'll realize that all the judder from your mind is silenced, and the movie will carry you to your own forbidden room.
The Station Agent (2003)
Another piece of Americana
The reason I'm writing here is not only to praise this movie but to encourage anyone reading this to watch it. You see, I'm what you may call "A movie buff" and I know a good movie when I see one. This movie has something for everybody. There is something about middle aged people going through awkward situations that make us learn that the sky won't fall if we take risks in knowing new people and that anyone can relate to that and there is plenty of it here. I would also recommend another little gem that I am absolutely sure my fellows here on IMDb that are going to love. Please check Tom DiCillo's Box of Moonlight. You're welcome.
Mortdecai (2015)
Please let there be a sequel!
I usually only write a review when a movie gets an undeserved rate and needs a very deserved attention.
Leave it to Johnny Depp to make the British look good. Trust me, I lived in London for over a decade and when it comes to movies... Its kinda... difficult. The British are very good at being creepy (hence they will always make the best villains) but funny is another matter entirely. Don't get me wrong! I love the British and everything they have to offer, but in terms of movies its better to "live it to the Americans" as they say.
Now, on to the movie! I get it why people "didn't get it", but once you actually pay attention and watch it you're gonna realize that this is by far the best comedy of 2015, hands down. You are however required to have a certain "level of sophistication" to fully appreciate it. Enjoy it!
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015)
Awesome movie that scared the audience so much into not liking it
For as long as I can remember I've been having these nightmares that I'm being chased by some "things" or "someone", and after watching the movie I've had the same nightmare, but this time I woke up and thought: "oh yeah, it kinda makes sense...". This in not only a good movie, this is an incredible movie. I just hope the producers don't fall for the same stupidity that lead to the end of the sequel of the last air bender, because of some idiot fan boys that failed to see the adaptation for the screen.
Now, back to the reason why so many people didn't get it: The nightmares. If you think of an apocalyptic end for humanity, this movie is as probably as close to reality as it gets, even though it looks science fiction, which in my opinion is why so many people hated it. We don't want to believe that it is possible, but we do it anyway in an almost subconscious level. We think of wars or natural disasters and nothing, I mean nothing compares to what would happen if humanity is stricken by a virus that is 100% lethal, has no cure and is turns the infected victims into walking monsters, and that's too frightening, even for a "fantasy movie".
And at the core of the movie is humanity itself. It is not enough to fight for the "greater good" and choose a side for what is believed to be the "right side". Most totalitarian states think they can achieve their goals by any means necessary to find a cure, and the movie shows this very well, and in the end they are no different than the threat of the inevitable annihilation itself.
Splice (2009)
The Chupacabras real story
The same mystery surrounding certain psychics sometimes finds its way into movie scripts, believe it or not. We don't really know exactly how this works, but that doesn't change the fact that these "coincidences" happen.
Maybe the same psychic connection, perhaps the collective unconscious, who knows? What most people seem to have missed when they review this movie is the story itself. I guess to connect the dots one has to have a real life experience, and that's what I may have that other people don't.
When I saw Dren for the first time I knew I've seen that before. I was in the military in Southern Brazil in 1991 during a field exercise when a college and I where surprised when we saw "someone" coming in our direction. We where on sentry duty expecting the Sargent doing his route around 1 AM. It was a dark November night in some woods behind the HQ where we where doing this 24 hour "camp exercise" when I saw someone coming in our direction. There was also cattle mutilations in the fields surrounding the Head Quarters and I remember someone describing being watched by "something".
I could only see a silhouette with some lights from the city way back on the horizon. A big corporal had told us when we assumed that post to not let anyone pass without checking with us first. I told my recruit colleague: "Here comes the Sargent". I then look again and this silhouette appears to be "limping", on both legs. The next thing that goes through my mind is the training. I shout:"Hold it right there and identify yourself!". The "creature" is now about ten meters away from us and walking in this weird way, exactly like Dren was when she was young.
Then for the first time in my life actually freeze with fear. At the same time the creature is looking at me, directly into my eyes and in that moment I knew that somehow it could read my thoughts! And it KNEW that I was afraid. "It" then dropped to the ground in the most never-seen-before way and starts crawling like a cat does, towards a bush. I'm holding my flash light towards it the whole time. I look at my partner (and I almost laughed when I saw him, because he's actually black, but when we both looked at each other he was PALE WHITE, in fear!)and he is has his mouth wide open and frozen still. Without taking my eyes off from that bush I lower myself to the ground and grab a big rock and throw it into the bush. Luckily we're not carrying any live ammo. I do it again and nothing. I look at my colleague and say: "Even if I die, but I HAVE to see what that was". I go towards the bush and walk pass it, look around the other side where the creature was suppose to be hiding and there's nothing there, to my relief. Because we where doing this exercise we spent the rest of the night and morning doing other stuff, like survival camp and blowing up stuff, all in good military fashion. For some strange reason we never told anyone about what happened and I totally forgot about it. It was then ten years later that the name Chupacabras start making headlines. The movie is great, and there's a real life story behind it.
