It;s not a "film person's film" but its a great alternative to Pretty Woman
7 February 2004
I just finished watching Danny Deckchair....so everything is fresh. Of course its not something you spend three years dissecting, arguing, and comparing. Its a light, full-hearted film meant to make you feel good about life and love and all that stuff. What I loved about it was that it was all that stuff and not such a big production! The initial premise was so outrageous that it was unbelievable but the rest, well it could be measured with a yard stick.....maybe a yard pole. If you didn't enjoy it......well maybe your cynicism has become more than a hobby.

the rabbit, the rabbit

i just had a very cursory glance at the comments on this film, but it seems to me that no one has made the connection between the rabbit and Alice's rabbit. I haven't listened to the director comments on the DVD, but whenever I see a very large, somewhat disturbing rabbit, mixed with altering realities I tend to think of Alice in Wonderland. I am in no way stating that Lewis Carrol was eating mushrooms and dropping acid while he was writing this fantastical book, but especially during the eighties(which a couple users commented the children of as being the target for this film) this would be a foregone conclusion, its as clear as a CRUCIFIXATION so if the rabbit is an allusion to Alice in Wonderland well its a pretty f%^&*% dark wonderland.....the world has changed and innocence is lost to psychosis.

this just sucked!

I love Nicholas Cage. I mean it. I love him. But that even couldn't make this movie right for me. I read the book maybe that was the problem. But it was a major waste of time. Completely prosaic. American made and obvious. And I am actually an american (just happen to live in australia). I wish Penelope would just go away. She was a good actress in Blow. But was she acting. I gave this movie a one.

Flash Gordon (1980)
tricks are for kids

at last, someone enjoys a bit of fun. Everyone is starting to take this movie business way to seriously. Like every director is approaching a script like a canvas from michelangelo. he had a sense of humour too you know. mars attacks! starship troopers! Flash! Fantastic films meant to entertain and amuse. Simple. I saw Flash when I was 9, and even then I realized it was ridiculous. It didn't mean it was terrible. I will always remember Go Flash Go! Go Flash Go! and Timothy Dalton starting his terrible career sticking his hand in those holes. The movie stayed with me for twenty years now. So I say its pretty good.

an academy award winner that is really a true winner

Merchant-Ivory always do a good job. Their films are not only stunning visually, but they evoke an emotional response. A Room with a View is superficially a love story. and I hate to admit it kind of stays there. But they stick to the books. Having read the respective, Howard's End, and a Passage to India, I can truly say they adhere to what has been written. But the books are completely about what you read between the lines. E.M Forester was pretty disgusted by his culture. Yet it was his....and he loved it.......because it provided itself with misfits...i.e Lucy and her beau. He was an echo of Oscar Wilde. I think if you look very hard into this movie you will see that. Denholm Elliot is the epitome of an englishman who isn't an englishman. and he is the complete opposite of Mrs. Vyse....his opposing character. Even the vicar isn't what he supposed to be. Nude Bathing (Oh my Goodness) and in praise of passion he is a free spirit. I think anyone who can say bad about his movie has issues. Yes, its main-stream international. But its beautiful.

Pitch Black (2000)
another film to appreciate

unlike jh whathisface..... I am always very excited to see a sci-fi film. They are a rareity...even with today's ingenious entertainment ways. I thought it was a fantastic attempt. Considering the lack of experience in terms of cast and direction, I thought it was pretty damn good. Compare it to Mission to Mars. Or Even Sphere (even though I think sphere was fantastic) and you will see its a great venture. definately worth seeing. More like a serious version of Verhoeven's Starship Troopers (which I also absolutely adored!!!)
