3rd Rock from the Sun: You Don't Know Dick (2001)
Love this episode
May contain spoilers. I really enjoyed this particular episode. When Nina points out that Dick doesn't really know anything about Mary, he proves her point in many ways. But the reason I liked this episode is for the attention that it gives to my favorite singer, Gordon Lightfoot. Although he is not in this episode, he is mentioned repeatedly as he is giving a concert in the town. Of course, Dick doesn't "know" that GL is Mary's favorite singer and she wants to go. I won't give any other details, just that I am disappointed that no one else has written about this episode and no information was given about using his name and logo. Was one of the writer's a fan, or the producer? The ultimate would have been for he himself to be in the show for a cameo. I would love it if anyone else knows anything about this episode could fill me in.
Big Ears (1931)
Setting the record straight
I just finished watching this episode of Our Gang shorts. After reading some of the other reviews I began to wonder if they had watched the same episode. Or at least if they had paid attention. Several wrote that Stymie and Dorothy had Wheezer ingest the contents of the bathroom medicine cabinet. Actually what happens is that Stymie talks Wheezer into eating, among other things, lard, Limburger cheese and hot sauce. This causes Wheezer to have a bad stomachache. Then as Stymie and Dorothy bring bottle after bottle to the sick little boy, he recognizes the Castor oil, turpentine and other noxious items and refuses to drink them. And yes, there are racially insensitive remarks, but in the end, it is Stymie's mother who saves the day. And you have to watch it with the knowledge that times have changed.
Poirot: Cards on the Table (2006)
My whole family was disappointed.
I noticed that all of the reviews from those who have read and loved the books of Agatha Christie intensely dislike this adaptation. The only two fairly positive reviews came from folks who did not say if they had read the book. I thought this adaptation was appallingly awful. It has been many years since I read "Cards on the Table" but I recognized immediately that we were dealing with a screenwriter who thought he/she could improved on Mrs. Christie. It is well known to her fans that the one thing Agatha hated was someone changing her stories. Since she is the best selling mystery writer of all times, I would like to know why today's scriptwriters make such changes. I know that the earlier Poirot series made certain changes like adding Japp, Hastings and Miss Lemon into stories that they were not in originally. But it was done in such a manner that still kept the "Christie flavor". The interjection of stereotypical homosexual characters does seem out of place in her world. I have nothing against having gay characters--the Midsomer Murder series has plenty. It is the arbitrary changes on Christie's works that I object to. It added nothing to the story. I have watched one of two of the "Marple" series before giving up on them. They are awful and so is this Poirot. I would like to know why Matthew Pritchard and/or the Christie estate is allowing such desecration to her works?
