Great film...buy the Director's Cut DVD!
26 December 2003
There are two things that make this film one of the best made in the last few years- characters and music. I am personally not a big fan of 70s music, but it is used very well in this film, most of my favourite scenes are made all the more memorable by the music, which includes America (Simon & Garfunkel), Tiny Dancer, Mona Lisa's and Mad Hatters (both Elton John), River (Joni Mitchell) Paranoid (Black Sabbath) and Feel Flows (The Beach Boys) Most of the actors and actresses in this film give the performance of their lives, Frances McDormand being especially comical as William's mother, and many of the best moments are all hers. William himself has an endearing quality about him to the audience, and I'm surprised I haven't seen Patrick Fugit in any other films since this one. A great film, and the Directors Cut DVD is well worth the money, especially for those of you (like me) who had previously only watched the UK version.

The worst film Ive ever seen- and thats saying something!
26 December 2003
I watched this film at a friends house after being told it was 'hilarious!' We had a straight choice between this and 'XXX,' and there has never been a more stupid mistake in the history of mankind! Ive never been so glad I had to go home in all my life! I never saw the end of the film, and I never want to, it is without a doubt the most godawful piece of film making Ive ever seen. Some films are bad due to bad acting, bad storylines, bad script, bad casting, this one had the lot! I havent seen Annette Bening in anything since, I imagine she was booted out of Hollywood permanently after this debacle! (Not that Im picking on her, she's usually a very good actress.)

Any film with X-Rated sex content, and humour for the under 5s has an obvious problem!

Painfully true for so many people!
26 December 2003
I think I enjoyed this film so much because when I went to see it in the pictures, I was 14, and it was so painfully accurate to my own life! I think thats why many people enjoyed it. Apart from the fact that I could relate to the main character, I found it to be quite a funny film in places, usually the scenes with David Arquette were the funniest (especially his 'Risky Business' impression!) An OK film, mostly decent performances, I liked it, so I gave it a 7

Intolerable cruelty? It certainly was!
26 December 2003
The second worse film ever, after 'What Planet Are You From,' the only thing that stopped me from leaving the pictures was that Id paid a fiver, I had popcorn left, and the film kept threatening to be funny, so I stayed in the hope that it would raise at least one laugh. Edward Hermann was the only funny thing in it, and once he died, I knew the comedy was over, and how right I was!

It wasnt really that the film was so bad, but it was billed as a comedy, and it wasnt funny!

Modern day Breakfast Club?!?
26 December 2003
I can see the similarities between this and the Breakfast Club (another favourite of mine!) but I think this is still a good film on its own. The different characters and their relationships are quite well developed (with the exception of Mary Beth, but without trying to spoil the film for anyone who hasnt seen it, this was probably intentional) and the action moves quite quickly once the film moves into the second day. Lots of action, funny lines, gore, all in all a very good film.

Pretty good teen thriller
26 December 2003
The most impressive thing in this film is the performance of Fairuza Balk as Nancy. She is truly sinister as the leader of the 'coven,' especially when 'he gives her powers.' Robin Tunney also gives a good performance as Sarah, showing her range, as the weak frightened Sarah near the beginning of the film, to the stronger character she emerges as at the end. Not too many funny moments, overall a very dark film, but still a good watch.

Teen Cult Classic
26 December 2003
I know this film isn't everyone's 'cup of tea,' but for anybody who likes watching this type of teen movie, this is one of the best around! I first watched it all the way through on video at a friends house, and found myself in hysterics throughout most of it! Okay, the characters and plot aren't very well developed, but its a feel good, escapist teen movie full of laughs, and is probably responsible for much of the younger generations' aspirations to work in a record store. The characters are funny, especially Mark, and there is an abundance of one-liners. Also, as someone else commented, it has become very nostalgic of the early to mid-90s. Don't watch it if you hate teen movies, but if you do, go out and buy it now!

One of my all time favourite films ever!
26 December 2003
Where can I start when commenting on 'Muriel's Wedding?' I only ended up watching it in the first place because some friends were quoting it and I was intrigued! This film is usually billed as a romantic comedy, but it also has it's sad and serious moments. It is one of those films that can have you crying one minute, and laughing the next. The characters are all important, all have their own personality and are well acted out, even the fringe characters such as Joanie or Brice. The music is the most enjoyable aspects of the film. There are a few Abba songs, which are used to create the mood of the scenes, even before anything happens. All in all, a great film. All that stops me giving it a 10 is that no film is perfect!

Bit of a weepie! Be warned!
26 December 2003
I havent cried at a film this much for a while! A very poignant film, and the switching between the two separate stories is done very well, without lingering on one story for too long. Great performances by the four leading ladies, as well as by some of the minor characters such as Grady, Big George, and Frank Bennett, a brilliant performance by Nick Searcy. Lots of funny moments, with the sad moments too, a very realistic film, showing that life has highs and lows, but ultimately quite a feel good film.

The only thing I was left wondering, was who Jessica Tandy was in the other story. Her name in the credits was Ninny, but we were never introduced to her younger self.

not to be taken seriously!
26 December 2003
I dont really consider this a horror film, more of a gory comedy! None of this film is to be taken seriously, and it even takes the mick out of itself at some points! The characters of Sam and the Frog Brothers are great, and the three of them produce some of the best one-liners Ive heard! ("Death by stereo!") A typical 80s teen movie that Ive been raised on, more or less since birth, and well worth the time spent watching it.
