13 Hours that didn't have to be...
19 January 2016
For the movie I gave it an 8. That's based on 32 years of military service, 7 combat tours (3 in Iraq) and working with the likes of the characters in the movie. Sorry for those who's lives were so well protected that they've never been exposed to the likes of us but, that's how we talk and act. It's a type-A environment and we use it to protect ourselves and motivate our brothers in arms.

I am well versed on the facts as provided by the MSM however, as someone in the biz I also know that the fly in the ointment are the facts.

1. The firing of mortars is an art and the mortar launcher has to be anchored to the ground or every mortar will land off target. The mortars landing on the CIA compound are dead accurate and also require spotters to assist with any corrections.

2. Aviano AB, Italy is about 2-hours away. Had they been launched, even if only to do a low fly-by, would have driven off the attackers; just like I used them in Iraq in Mosul, Tikrit, and Baghdad. I don't know why the Commander of the 555 (Triple Nickel) didn't launch. It's one of the big questions that remain unanswered by the media or the movie.

3. Hillary's statement that, "Was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk one night who decided they'd go kill some Americans?" was a red herring. Because it was neither. As later testimony bore out, it was a planned, coordinated, terrorist attack on the anniversary of 9/11.

4. All UAS aircraft are armed. As stated in the movie could have assisted in the defense of the embassy or the CIA compound.

5. General Ham, AfricaCom CC is someone I worked with in Mosul in 2004 for 6-months. Good guy and I know from my experience he would not hesitate to act if allowed. One day he'll give an interview and get his whole story. Can't wait...

This is not a first date or even a second date movie
16 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The movie starts slow with typical character development. You think that Simon and Gordo were just acquaintances in high school... but eventually you learn the truth. Didn't see that coming as Simon, really the writer, keep that from us for most of the movie. Gordo for his part wasn't all that normal either. The house scene with the dinner, the notes (very creepy), and the mind-f**k at the end with the monkey mask all played into something that I can't believe would ever really happen.

And that's why this movie works. It sucks you into the paranoia of Simon, Gordo, and Robyn. They all have secrets and issues that they hide and they're all on their own plot lines.

Overall it's a very suspenseful movie but it does start slow. And it leaves you to wonder, "what happens now?" And if you do watch this movie with a significant other don't be surprised if they're looking at you and wondering if you're a bully...

What are you hiding? R

Criticize the Iraq war if you must but judge the movie w/o the political commentary
23 May 2015
The movie is about the cumulative effects of combat in the Iraq war. The main character is based on the life of Navy SEAL and sniper Chris Kyle. The movie the pivotal times in his life, how the terrorist attacks on 9/11 influenced his decision to join the military, his relationship with his wife and family.

What the movie captures is how he changed over the course of four 9-month tours to Iraq because of the effect war has on him.

As someone who also deployed 3 times I can tell you that this was what I believe Eastwood was focusing on and not any political agenda or propaganda as some critics have suggested.

I'll ask you this if you think otherwise. Was the 1978 film Deer Hunter about the Vietnam War's politics or the effect it had on it's main characters played by De Niro and Walken? In the 1953 movie From Here To Eternity was the fact that we dropped the A-Bomb a factor in judging that film? The thing that all those films, and most war movies include, are the effects of combat. They called it soldier's heart, shell shock, or PTSD. It's had over 80 names since the Civil War and it effects each soldier differently. It also effects Police, Firemen, survivors of trauma from accidents and disasters and terrorist attacks.

If you didn't serve it may be difficult for you to truly appreciate the character of Chris Kyle but judge him and Eastwood's direction of the film separately from the politics of the Iraq War.

If this is what getting old is going to be like...kill me now.
27 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is a good movie but for me it was painfully difficult to watch. Obviously we are less astute when we get older and make cognitive mistakes regarding correspondences, things we see or don't understand, as well as technology. This movie encapsulates all of that with the inclusion of the immediate family, extended family, and friends.

Bruce Dern gives a great performance and the supporting cast is equally good. I gave this movie a 5/10 only because it's not compelling enough to warrant a higher grade. While the acting was good there lacked drama to the overall plot. The best part was in the end (Spoiler) when Woody drives by everyone in Hawthorne in his new truck.

If this is what I'm going to be like...let me know and don't patronize me;and please don't let me wear socks with my flip-flops.

Unsloved murder causes ghost to kill??? Don't bother.
8 January 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This was a story of a ghost who at one time was a wife who became a social worker and... OK, I really don't know what this movie was about because they never tell you why anything is happening. Apparently the wife cheated and her husband killed her? Anyway he didn't think the kid was his. Was there a DNA result? Who knows? The old woman who lives in the haunted house stays alive when everyone else is dying. Why? The social worker who gets sent by her co-workers to check out the house becomes the last victim, or the first depending on how you see it.

The bodies of the security guard and the cops disappear to...? The pictures of girls who have disappeared have blackout eyes when the pictures were taken before they disappeared. Does the ghost have access to 1-hour photo? The cat. Is it a ghost too? As you can tell I have never gotten into the haunted house thing anyway but this movie was really bad and I couldn't tell you how it could have been better. Why? Because it wasn't a good plot and it wasn't that scary.

If the ghost was that of the cheating wife why did she have to kill? At least in the Ring, which this movie is compared to, the kid was evil and that is why the mother push her down into the well.

Half Scary?
30 October 2004
Come on! when are we going to see some quality movie making again? This movie starts off fine with the plot developing. Then, Halle ends up in the hospital because... OK no spoiler yet.

Good plot up until now but then it all falls apart. I think the director tried to tie it up to quickly and I don't know why. It could have been better even if that meant changing the original story.

The ending wrapped up with little or no development of the bad guys' characters. That said, the movie had only one actor--Halle. Everyone else was supporting cast and this is why the movie only rates a 5.

Maybe the movie was trying to tell all of us something when Halle had to take a detour. This one is a car wreck and we should forget about it and leave.

Snoozer
28 October 2004
Warning: Spoilers
The whole movie was done half-assed. It could have been a much better movie but, that would have required a re-write and different actors. Compared to "Traffic" this was a wreck. I am just glad I didn't have to pay for it.

Spoiler:

What was the point of having crooked cops getting arrested? To share the guilt of drug dealers and make them feel better? Pu-leaze! The parents were scum, driven by greed, and didn't even consider the harm they were doing; as pointed out by Ice-T.

Don't bother
31 December 2003
Warning: Spoilers
The over-the-top acting of Hackman and Devito leave you itching to change the channel. This is as surely a piece of crap as that stuff I wiped off my shoe this afternoon. Please, just walk away if a friend wants you to come over to watch this--unless you bring something more exciting over, like cards.

Now this is what I call entertainment. Spader/Gyllenhaal A+
26 December 2003
First, I have to say that I like movies that keep you guessing and are not predictable. Second, one has to know the difference between watching a movie for entertainment (like T3) and being entertained by a movie. Secretary hits on both. Have you ever watched a movie that makes you laugh out loud? That your kids are in bed? That your mother is not watching this with you? That has you saying, "I can't believe it?" This is one of those!
