Venom (2005)
A so so offering to the horror genre.
It's funny how this Venom movie came about. 2 weeks ago, this movie didn't even have a trailer! Let alone a release date! But, with the recent effects of Hurricane Katrina, this movie has been pushed up the ladder and been given a early September release! I didn't have many expectations going' in, I knew combining Williamson with Gillespie could turn out to be a nice tandem, but I was mistaken. 'Venom's worst problem is its screenplay. I didn't expect that to be something that would hinder the film(i thought that the dull teens would accomplish that feat). *Spoiler here* One of the supposed 'leads' is the son of the guy who becomes put under this spirit, thinking this sub plot would go somewhere, all it leads to is some idiotic type "voo doo doll". The movie was unintentionally funny, and that obviously hurt the mood of the film. This movie does sport some cool scenes, some nice kills, and some pretty decent eye candy...so all is not totally lost. Definitely not worth 9.75, so netflix it some night.
The Fanglys (2004)
Could have been better.
Saw this flick over the week and have to admit, I was kinda feelin' it through the first 30min or so. I thought the whole witch thing was pretty decent and thought we had a brutal witch on our hands...did that happen? Nope. Trying to freak us out (this way never works), they throw a retarded cannibal our way and let him run around lookin' like a idiot the rest of the movie. I don't get it, all these new 'B' horror movies are so worried about cannibalism and all that crap. I thought the witch tale was decent, and that was what I expected from the flick...something decent. If i had gotten that, it would have been 5bucks well spent. It didn't happen. Quick side note, the character Jerry is by far the worst character to ever hit a movie. I mean this dude would not stop crying like a little girl. Really embarrassing. That didn't help this movie in that respect either. I'd try and avoid this mess.
Secret Window (2004)
Depp at his finest
Only one thing comes to mind when thinking about this movie, and that that thing is about the man. Thats right, Johhny Depp. Depp's performance in this movie is second to none and should be considered as a nominee for some sort of award. The way Depp can carry a movie from frame to frame with just himself in about 90% of the frames is amazing. He is as charismatic as they come and should go down as one of the top 10 actors of all time. Simply an amazing performance, so far this years best. I didn't really care so much for Turturro's character, but it got its point across. I hope Depp's performance doesn't get forgotten come awards time due to its early year release, it really would be a shame.
