Antlers (2021)
Embarrassingly bad
4 stars for the cool creature and the efforts of the cast, but wow, what a tiresome, abysmal script. You feel bad for the actors having to chew their way through the laughably on-the-nose dialogue, full of clunky exposition and utterly devoid of depth. If you saw this on the page, you'd bang your head against the desk. It is so dull, so obvious, so thin. You can feel the actors straining to make these stereo instructions sound natural by injecting Christopher Walken-like pacing to their reading. And shoehorning Graham Greene in as a native prop does not compensate for nor legitimize the gross misuse of first nation mythology. This film was not made for anyone except the writer/director, it hates its audience and loves itself. The kids were amazing, hope they have huge careers ahead for them. The filmmaker, I hope he spends more time on the next script, or asks for feedback outside of his circle of yes-men.
Into the Dark: Crawlers (2020)
Hey, Blum, check your filmmakers
Is this an audio book or a movie? Why am I being told the story with ceaseless, interruptive, unnecessary, obnoxious, voice over narration? I understand giving your filmmakers creative freedom, it's nice, you're nice, but Jason Blum, you know how good movies are supposed to play, why don't you guide these newbies a little? For us? Please? This would be fun if I wasn't constantly on edge expecting the flow of the story to be shattered by more on-the-nose voice over, which it was, relentlessly So so so annoying.
