Velma (2023)
The Show has nothing to do with Scooby Doo
There are spoilers but I'm trying to save you the trouble if wasting your time. I just started the first episode and didn't realize it was so crass and disgusting right from the get go. First scene is a pair of cockroaches having intercourse and then a boot crushes them in mid coitus. Next scene is a group of teenage girls naked in a shower. Literally 10 seconds into the show and it's unwatchable. We could not watch more than a minute of this bizarro world version of a bastardized Scooby Doo episode before being too grossed out to continue. WARNING DO NOT watch with children in the room. We had no idea this was an adult show that is not suitable for young kids.
Blood from Stone (2020)
If Vampires had to deal with human issues
Blood from Stone is thoroughly entertaining take on the vampire genre. It reminds me of the movie The Hunger. However this film is much more grounded. The vampires are struggling with the weight of being undead and trying to have a semblance of normality in a modern human world. The main vampire, Jure is battling emotional and substance abuse issues. A lot of the humor is derived from his life spiraling out of control, almost an allegory for a junkie just about to hit rock bottom. The core of its story is a family and relationship drama wrapped around a vampire theme. Several scenes get bloody enough to satisfy horror fans and the dark comedy ebbs and flows like waves whenever Jure is out on a hunt. The acting and casting is solid with Gabriella Toth and Nika Khitrova rounding out the main cast. Definitely a fun to watch indie horror film.
Murder Made Easy (2017)
Hitchcock Is In Its Blood
A classic murder suspense flick that would make Hitchcock extremely proud. This film reminds me of Rope but with a lot more timely edits. The tightly woven plot revolves around a cadre of dinner guests arriving one after another. True to its murder mystery form, the plot twists and turns all throughout. Acting is solid through out with a good mix of dark and offbeat humor. Camera floats in and out of the scenes with a sense purpose and timing. The framing is one of the widest I have seen in a indie film with characters near the edge of action on certain shots. It's purposeful long take cinematography lends to it's visual style. Overall this well written and directed dark humor tale of murder will leave you quite satisfied. A fast paced feature for modern standards, clocking in less than 1 hour 16 minutes. A highly recommended viewing for fans of dark humor and murder mysteries.
Da wan (2001)
Don't expect any laughs, this is a horrible Chinese comedy.
I can understand both Chinese and English and trust me the reason why you aren't laughing has nothing to do with language barriers. Most of the movie drags on and on with pointless dialogue. I was dying for just one funny scene to justify watching this stinker for 2 hours and the moment never comes. If you want funny Chinese comedies stick with Stephen Chow films, this one is so below par.
