The Sandman: Dream of a Thousand Cats/Calliope (2022)
Not bad.
The story was decent enough and held closely to comic cannon. I wasn't a fan of just tacking it on to season 1, though. It adds nothing to season 1 and it doesn't fit the narrative of the season. If it had been released separately from the season, it would have been better.
The Black Phone (2021)
I really wanted to like it, but...
The pacing didn't help with watching at home. If I'd spent money to watch it in a theater, maybe the vision of the director/writer would have come through more clearly. I wasn't pushed away because it was frightening. It just failed to be intriguing enough to hold my attention.
I will say the acting was good. I just don't think the actors were given enough to work with the carry the film.
Licorice Pizza (2021)
Fun nostalgia, but lacking on plot or character growth
It was an enjoyable trip to another time, seeing a different generation face their own unique struggles. I just kept waiting for it to get going, which it didn't really do. The exposition was decent. It lacked meaningful conflict. Sure, there was the hot and cold nature of their interactions, but they were never really a couple so whether they were close or distant at any given moment didn't seem to really matter. It wasn't a conflict to resolve but just the nature of their interaction. The climax and pseudo-resolution came in the last scene, but nothing was really resolved. It wasn't a problem that they weren't a couple, so there was nothing to be lost if they didn't get together. Neither character showed real growth. They were pretty much the same as when they started. It was entertaining enough to watch, but through the entire movie I kept waiting for something meaningful to happen.
Archive 81 (2022)
The BBC would have done it better.
This story could have been done more cathartically and concisely in 3-4hrs. A 3-4 episode miniseries would have been better than 8 episodes of rehashing the same concepts again and again.
Naked and Afraid of Love (2021)
I found the show intriguing.
I'd had read previous reviews before starting the show. I agree that one shouldn't expect a heavy dose of survival techniques. What I do like about it is that it shows more clearly the psycho-social aspects of how groups of young, single, naked people interact.
El desorden que dejas (2020)
The setting was beautiful, but it couldn't make up for the characters or story.
For me, it failed to provide any catharsis. To evoke an emotional reaction, viewers need to find empathy for the characters. I didn't care why Viruca was killed, since she lacked any redeeming qualities. I couldn't care if Raquel survived, for the same reason. I didn't desire to see Raquel potentially die, I was just indifferent. With that, it left little room for the story to move me.
