Bombay Begums (2021– )

High hopes met with disappointment
13 March 2021
I heard about this show and was immediately excited. Female protagonists growing on screen in TV and film- as multidimensional characters is something I always look forward to. But this show too falls short. Here are some large issues: 1. Despite its attempt to be non judgemental about women's desires through it's commentary, it actually is quite judgmental in its direction. 2. Women are pitted against each other because obviously women can't have positions of power and still support one another. Men share power and friendships and alliances all the time but for some reason most shows miss this point about women. 3. All the main female character except Laxmi are basically mildly terrible. They all make a barrage of choices and decisions that can only be construed as uncharacteristic. How can smart successful women who've had to struggle for their position in life not relate with other women in similar plight? The only redeemable thing about Rani is how hard she tries with her stepchildren even when they're total jerks which is practically all the time. Honestly it's exhausting to watch after a point. 4. And her teenage daughter Shai's character just portrays every young girl in a bad light. There is so much more to 14 year old than constantly salivating over a boy and being desperate enough to paint your skirt and fake a period. It's done in unbelievably poor taste.

I believe my problems with this show can't be worded so I'll just end it here but saying the show is an affront too strong women many of whom I know to be in positions of power and still have a healthy relationship with other women while owning their desires!
