Meek's Cutoff (2010)
Really it's almost a complete waste of time
Visually nice, interesting that there is very little dialogue and the night scenes have little light so you can hardly see anything. Realistic, very, probably. I have given it five marks for the realism. Trouble is, real life without any drama is usually very dull, and I could have the same experience looking out of my front window.
It's not really worth bothering with for the qualities is does possess. And the ending? There is no ending. Did they run out of money before they could actually think of an ending? Why else would you make people watch a "story" for over 100 minutes and then just stop the film. Bizarre.
Get Him to the Greek (2010)
Love it
I cannot understand how anyone didn't enjoy this movie - it was the funniest thing I have seen in years, and I am very hard to please when it comes to comedy films - most of them are juvenile, corny and repetitive - not this one, some people on here need to get their heads out of their backsides.
All three "leads", Russell Brand, Jonah Hill and P. Diddy or whatever he's called these days, do a great job - I have a feeling that the people who didn't like this movie are too stupid to understand the subtleties of some of the humour, they probably prefer intellectual stuff like Deuce Bigalow and Police Academy!
Sherlock Holmes (2009)
I had reservations but thoroughly enjoyed this movie
I must admit I did have reservations about the pairing of Downey and Law, and would have preferred a pair who looked more like my and probably many others' perception of what the two should look like. Having said that, I thought both actors did a great job in what was a really entertaining film. I also had reservations that Guy Ritchie might ruin the story by trying to be too flash, but no, it looked great and London looked stunning. My only critical comment would be the fact that Irene got from the Houses of Parliament to Tower Bridge in a ridiculously short time when anyone who knows London also knows that they are a long way from each other - it reminded me of Kevin Costner walking from Dover to Nottingham (about 150 miles or more?) in a day in the appalling Prince of Thieves!
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)
Seeing the horror of the Holocaust through children's eyes
This was an exceptional film - it was very clever the way they told the story through the eyes of innocent children and was all the more powerful for it. It also made you more sympathetic to the ordinary Germany people who lived in the country and disagreed with what was going on but were either too frightened or not significant enough to do anything about it.
One of the only films worthy of inclusion in the nominations for major awards last year was Slumdog Millionaire - The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Gran Torino and The Changeling were all absolutely superb powerful films and all ignored.
When there are great movies made like this, how do films like Benjamin Button get nominated for major awards - do people have their heads up their behinds?
A Perfect Getaway (2009)
Very enjoyable fun suspense thriller
I loved this movie - Kauai is my favorite Hawaiian island and not all, but quite a bit of this movie, was filmed there. So the scenery is beautiful, the cast, plot and dialogue are all very good and the whole is a very enjoyable 100 minutes.
I actually guessed the twist, but that was only because I had read in reviews that there was a huge twist two-thirds of the way through, and that was the most obvious "huge" one - maybe in future I shouldn't read reviews before seeing this kind of movie! Either way it didn't spoil my enjoyment - I think the movie is underrated by most reviewers, I really don't know what people expect, some of them over-analyzing it too much.
I would recommend watching this film to anyone.
X's & O's (2007)
A couple of things (possible spoiler?)
Generally speaking, I thought this was a really enjoyable movie, it looked good, the cast was good and overall it was a very good job. I have two negative comments (that's good for me!) - first of all, there were moments in the film, particularly in the card-playing scene, where the songs were either too loud or not right for the scene and this detracted from the movie.
The other thing was, the last scene, what was the point of that? I thought the ending should have been right where Lorenzo walks away, talking to Jane on the phone - the bit after seemed too contrived to give us some kind of sentimental ending, at least I think that's what it was, either way it was surplus to requirements.
But for those two minor criticisms I would definitely have voted the movie an 8 or more.
