Strictly Dishonorable (1951)
Strictly awful
Like so many movies involving Ezio Pinza, this one is terrible. All of his movies are contrived to the enth degree and bear absolutely no relation whatsoever to real life. This guy could sing but he could not act. I've seen better actors in high school plays.
And like so many of Pinza's efforts, this one is pure cornball. He and Janet Leigh break their romance and part. Then they just happen to go into the same movie theater at about the same time. They just happen to see one another in a crowded dark theater. He just happens to break out into song in the theater and sweeps the lady off her feet. Come on, this is hokum at its worst.
This is my second well-thought out analysis of a Pinza movie, the other being the horrendous Mr.Imperium, which I would encourage you to read before you decide to watch that movie. Fare like this could easily turn one into a movie hater. That would be a shame since there are many good movies out there. This certainly isn't one of them.
Mr. Imperium (1951)
Horrible
This brief review contains no spoilers since the movie spoils itself. It is wooden and pedantic. It has no saving grace whatsoever. If someone invites you to his house to watch "Mr. Imperium", don't go. Even the title of the movie is dreadful and portends what garbage lies within. The whole plot is so bad that it could drive Mother Theresa to despair!!! It wasn't a stroke that led to the early demise of poor Ezio, it was having to act in this clunker that did him in. It must have haunted him the rest of his days. Perhaps he was an enemy alien and wanted revenge upon the Americans for his confinement. He found a perfect vehicle for his wrath in this travesty.
Mystic River (2003)
Terrible Experience
I would not have gone to see this movie unless my friend told me it had won several oscars recently (or golden orbs or whatever award is being handed out this week). Anyway, the movie stunk to high heavens. It was continually dark and gloomy and were it not***possible very minor spoiler*** for the comic relief provided by the Savage brothers (these guys had me rolling on the floor laughing so hard) this movie would have been a total waste of six dollars. Terrible direction, terrible dialogue, awful musical score, loads of non-sequiturs...and whatever was the purpose of the non-speaking spouce calling the detective from Manhattan? Good acting, especially by the forementioned Savage brothers, but there was no story in which to act. Save your money. Rent Zulu instead. Now there was a movie with merit.
