The Sandman (2022)
Don't actors read the script beforehand?
The script isn't even pedestrian. Swearing doesn't make for edgy dialogue. Actors appear to be reading the script by rote. A good cast but unlikeable characters. I'm four episodes in and that's where I think I'll stay.
A Discovery of Witches (2018)
Season 1 hooked me in. Season 2 did not land me.
Season 1 set mainly in Oxford had great production value, interesting characters and good script. Season 2 is banal, overblown production, twee script, and inconsistent characters. It promises things it doesn't deliver. I even fell asleep at the end of the final episode and couldn't careless what happened. Unless I read otherwise here, I won't be buying Season 3. I might re-watch 1 though.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Grandstanding Hollywood Luvvies
I saw the trailer and thought it looked fun. Instead it was a boring mishmash of actors trying to stereotype characters for a laugh. Merrill Streep appears to think Goldilocks curls, make for a savvy character profile, Kate Blanchett thinks an overbite is fun. Mark Rylance was just pathetic. Two leads did hold their own in spite of a half baked script.
Cosmos (2019)
Attention held for two hours.
I'm no sci/fi fan not even Spielberg, but I got completely drawn in to this one. I thought - give it ten minutes, it's English indie - I'm glad I did. Warmed to the characters, even the grumpy one, thought the acting was pretty good (natural). Slow burn but well paced. I see it's got a lot of hate mail (at first I thought it might be nerds left out of the cast and crew but then there were too many. I liked it, thought it plausible, have no interest in aliens, really don't care, but got drawn right in!
BuzzFeed Unsolved: True Crime (2016)
I have to fast forward idiotic comments.
I like a conspiracy theory and the content is good. Ryan does a good narration but his side kick keeps butting in with beyond inane comments. They're bad for off the cuff but he must've seen the script - can't he sit and think up some clever or even sensible comments? Came across it on Netflix just recently and found it interesting but can't be bothered to sit with the remote fast forwarding all the time.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
How Bad is This? Let me count the ways.
Bad script - mannered, predictable. Bad acting - possibly because of the script and forced accents. Bad production - there's definitely enough money thrown at it. Can always overlook minor faults like British flag in schools etc. Bad direction - stilted actors, too ponderous and repeat, repeat, repeat. I think we all got the message. Plus side, nice costumes, not a bad story and the penultimate episode was clever.
Extra Time (2015)
Professionally Produced Indie Short.
In the film world money not only talks but also buys the best. In this case a bunch of indie filmmakers not only pool their talents but their money too. You therefore might think it would be short on production value but no. The makers of Extra Time have sourced the best locations, cast the best actors and created inspiring special effects. With a cast including by Louise Jameson - Extra Time is a must whether you're interested in football or sci/fi. The story asks the question does time travel and sport really mix? Watch the film and decide.
