Love Actually (2003)
9/10
Perfect, snuggly, romantic comedy
27 July 2005
Love Actually has been criticised for being meaningless fluff. If this is true then it is a very good kind of fluff! Several stories of love intertwined into one unashamedly romantic, hilariously funny film.

Each story holds a different perspective of love. Some characters are married, others in love with people beyond their reach and others just want to get out there and have a good time.

Love Actually suffers if you read too much into it, accept it for what it is. This film is not an epic masterpiece...it is a well made, highly enjoyable, heart warming romantic comedy. After watching it, one is filled with some kind of cosy optimism. It restores faith in love and happiness and provides a great deal of laughs...if this film does nothing else it will brighten up your day! The cast are superb. Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman give beautiful performances, and I cannot review without mentioning the wonderful Kris Marshall (of My Family fame) who is without a doubt one of my favourite actors at present. All the stars (and there are plenty of them!) give brilliant, memorable performances.

My advice: Watch Love Actually, and let yourself be absorbed...do not attempt to pick apart each storyline for hidden meanings or messages. They aren't there. This film is much more enjoyable if accepted at face value.

Great Performances: Les Misérables in Concert (1995)
Season 24, Episode 10
10/10
Beautiful...
27 January 2005
...is the only word I can think of here.

Since hearing the Les Mis soundtrack a few months ago, I have been a die hard fan. Unable yet to see the show, I saw this in a shop and decided to buy it.

How glad I am that I did. This is amazing. All the cast are fabulous, especially Ruthie Henshall, Lea Salonga, Michael Maguire, Michael Ball and Phillip Quast. I wasn't as impressed by Judy Kuhn (I may be biased as I despise the character of Cosette) but she still gives a fantastic performance.

A word of warning though: bring out the tissues, and don't wear mascara during 'A Little Fall Of Rain' 10/10

Troy (2004)
No film is perfect...
9 November 2004
Troy being no exception. However, it is not as bad as some would have you believe.

A retelling of the Trojan war, Troy features superb special effects and an excellent cast.

For me, the best performance is by Eric Bana as Hector. Bana succeeds tremendously in portraying the sheer bravery of Hector, and you understand why everyone in Troy loves him!

Brad Pitt's Achilles is also a very good performance. Diane Kruger doesn't really have much to work with to give Helen some character. A dull character in this film, Kruger does her best.

Orlando Bloom's performance is good. Nothing spectacular, but again he is not given a very (in my opinion) interesting character to work with.

This is obviously not true to the Iliad completely, but lets face it, that wouldn't work in Hollywood now, would it?

Overall a 8/10

Second Star to the Left (2001 TV Movie)
So unbelievably adorable.
21 October 2004
This has been shown the past few christmases and is the most adorable little programme.

I am 14 but still enjoy it so much.

It is an enjoyable bit of Christmas TV pudding! When you watch it you can imagine the snow falling around you outside and a warm log fire blazing.

The characters are adorable from the home loving guinea pig, Duke to Archie the rabbit who longs for adventure. You love them all. The pigeons are also great (you'll understand when you watch it)

This is a great Christmas show for the young and young at heart. I highly recommend this!

Hercules (1997)
Hilarious, great fun for kids and adults.
17 June 2004
I think this film is wonderful. It is sheer entertainment for kids and hilarious for adults.

I first watched this movie age 7, and i loved it...now i watch it again age 14 and I'm howling with laughter. The 'You wanna buy a sundial?' sequence renders me unable to breathe for laughter, whilst when i was younger it got not so much as a giggle.

As with all Disney films, the jokes are for the 'big kids' and the entertainment value is for the little ones.

This film has been criticized for not staying true to Greek Mythology. My response is, it doesn't matter. This a witty, sarcastic and enjoyable film. Accuracies play no purpose.

The characters are wonderful, particularly Phil and Hades. Also, Megara provides a feisty, totally non 'princessy' female character, which is wonderful!

Overall - 8/10

Hmmm....
8 March 2004
Not as good as I expected. I thought that this would be a great show that would have me laughing out loud at every sketch. I simply adore any show that takes the p*ss out of the government and celebrities which is why I had such high expectations of this show. I'm not saying its a total disaster, far from it, it is indeed quite funny. It just doesn't live up to expectations. The impersonations are hilariously accurate, however the scripts let it down a great deal. Better scripts would equal a brilliant show. I hope this review does not sound like I am totally slamming the show as I do not wish to do that. I would just advise people not to expect something fabulous. :)
