Man on a Ledge (2012)
Unoriginal but enjoyable heist thriller.
The Good:
+ The acting is all around good; Worthington is a believable action star but not the brightest dramatic actor; Banks gives a strong performance and Burns is amazing as usual.
+ The female characters have an unusual layer of charm and sass (particularly Genesis Rodrigues, who puts Jamie Bell on place on more than one occasion).
+ The plot takes some interesting twists and turns towards the end.
+ Intense enough to have me sitting on the edge of the chair several times.
+ Never boring and occasionally even funny.
+ The heist and its climax are the most exciting and best flowing parts.
The Bad:
- A very typical thriller with a corrupt police force, a majestic heist and the lot.
- The script could have added more depth into the characters and the central narrative.
- Large parts of the first half - mainly the scenes with the titular man on the ledge - quickly become repetitive and tiresome.
- Not particularly original.
Verdict: Better than one would think, but nothing too special.
Mörkt vatten (2012)
One of the worst Swedish films ever produced.
The Good:
+ The final 5 minutes of Rafael Edholm's horror thriller are actually well done and, well, thrilling - but it is too little and definitely too late.
The Bad:
- The cheap and horrible soundtrack playing in the background almost continuously - it feels like a nasty headache that never goes away.
- The supposedly inventive shots that in reality are distracting and pretentious.
- Several sweeping shots that never serve a purpose in telling the story.
- The acting is below all standards - and Helena af Sandeberg is usually good in most of her roles.
- The terrible, terrible, terrible fake jump scare sequences that NEVER suit a serious horror movie these days.
- Probably the most idiotic script I have ever come across; terrible dialogue (it is obviously never taken seriously by any of the actors), and a plot that is empty and pointless from beginning to end.
- Lifeless and unlikable characters without backstories.
- Sloppy production and no real grip on the direction - more of an insult to the audience.
- The ending has no point whatsoever.
Verdict: Do not bother.
Bachelorette (2012)
A boring waste of time
The Good:
+ There is a couple of sequences that are somewhat funny and help classify this movie as a comedy.
The Bad:
- Bachelorette is a tiresome comedy; it is neither funny nor particularly inventive.
- The script is built upon endless amounts of comedy film clichés.
- A good majority of the jokes revolve around such mature subjects as genitalia, substance abuse, strippers and bulimia.
- Probably on of Kirsten Dunst's worst performances in a long time.
- It is excessively hysterical and over the top all of the time, so it actually becomes very tiresome to watch after a while.
- The story is very predictable - we have seen this subject and this story progression done several times before (and usually a lot better).
- Overall, there is little to no reason to re-watch this very boring comedy.
