The Marksman (2005)
Shows what happens to action heroes at the end
Now we all know the likes of Stallone, Scwartzenegger, Segal and Van Damme when they have finish making some great action films we get the poor quality low budget rubbish. Well I am sorry to say that it has happened to Snipes as well. We had Demolition Man, Blade and many other great films by Snipes and now it seems that Action Films are now out of favour and he has to jump on the poor quality film wagon.
The film shows what Van Damme has had to put up with for years (not including Wake of Death which was only quite Good) and films that try and rely on big bangs and lots of Macho gung ho material.
The film itself is set in some Russian backwater with a man who wants to start a world war and Snipes is sent in to blow up a nuclear war head station before it is primed. That is the story and to be honest I may have made it sound better than it actually is.
The saving grace in the movie for me is a chance to see that Emma Samms has if not a little older but still has a great sex appeal what with me being a lustful fan of hers for a number of years.
So in conclusion the film is easy to forget and perhaps look for the bargain bin in a local store where it will be soon on offer if you are a big snipes fan. Lets hope that he gets some better material real soon.
Something Special (2004)
Justin Fletcher at his best again
Now we have I am sure all heard of Justin Fletcher as the voice of Jake and Doodles and of Tikkabila fame but this is something different.
It is basically a children's programme for very young children and encompass the use of sign language. Now having spent the past year looking after my twin daughters (now 2) we have found that whilst the content of the programme is repeated a number of times my girls have developed a great variety of words.
My daughter even rubs her nose when asked for the noise of a pig (the sign language for grunting).
The programme also have shorts showing the special children in the show at play and in the home, these are a pleasure to behold and help other children watching to see that there are different children all around.
Out of Town (1980)
A TV programme to bring back happy memories if you are over 35.
Now in the age of computers and high tech machinery Jack Hargreaves took us back to the days when townsfolk never seen a cow or a sheep in the """wild"". This series ran and ran and I can remember my father sitting next to me reminiscing about his younger days both watching Jack and the things he remembered. Jack told us how they sheared sheep and well as the mating pattern of sheep !!!! He also showed us tales of fishing trips and the various countryside antics that he as a boy did. If you get the chance to see this do not expect high speed motor cars and artificial insemination of bulls and this is all done the old fashioned way and at a pace that makes us wish we all had time to spare.
Worzel Gummidge: A Cup 'O Tea and a Slice 'O Cake (1980)
The Christmas Special of Worzel Gummidge
First we had the series and as with all great series we had to have a Christmas Special. The special tells the story of what happens to Scarecrows and their importance in the Christmas festivities. An unknown fact is that Santa Claus actually uses the Scarecrows of the world to help him navigate and all scarecrows on Christmas Eve Point North to the pole. This is to ensure Santa gets his rounds done in good time.
Worzel on the other hand has other ideas of how he wants to spend his Christmas and this is the story of his adventure. He starts a journey which includes the series usual people such as Aunt Sally (Worzels intended), John and Sue (the titchy 'umans) and the Saucy Nancy a ships figure head and even a new one called Bogey McNeep played by a now famous Billy Connelly.
The basic story is Worzels Christmas Eve adventure and him meeting all of his friends and then returning back to the Crowman for the Christmas Party on Christmas day. As with all of Worzels adventures they do not go to plan as they never do and will Santa Claus ever get his rounds done.
This is a good spin off of the series and a welcome treat for the festive season. A bonus to a collection of Worzel stories and will warm the cockles of both old and young alike.
Another reminder of how good Jon Pertwee was as an actor and an actor that is sorely missed.
Worzel Gummidge Down Under (1987)
Not as good as the English but still great fun
Well back from the TV past Worzel Gummidge rose to the dizzy heights of stardom once more. Whilst not as good as the first four British Series (it lacked the West Country Charm) and being set in New Zealand (or Zew Nealand as Worzel explains)this still proved to be a great success.
Whilst Aunt Sally was there in New Zealand we needed Old Sgt. Beetroot and the Saucy Nancy to help Worzel get up to mischief. Having grown up with Geophrey Bayldons "Crowman" it was hard seeing another Crowman but this is soon explained away and you can then settle into the new set up.
All in all this is an excellant series which if shown again will enthrall the kids of this century as I still show them to my nephews and nieces (and I am sure I will to my new twins when they arrive) and will for years to come.
A big Thank You must go to the late Jon Pertwee who was and allways will be Worzel Hedgerow Gummidge.
Best wishes
