La Vida de los Peces (2010)
One of the better films of 2010 from Chile
The Director of this film, Matías Bize, started out early his career. His movies have grown a lot since his first attempts, and if we compare his first big hit (in Chile) "en la cama", we can really observe an abysmal difference with "la vida de los peces". While the first movie has the same elements, meaning a small confined space with two main characters mainly talking to each other during the whole movie, it's only in "la vida de los peces" that we can have a real insight in the characters, they actually feel alive and throughout the movie we start to evolve feelings for them. My opinion is that the script is much better than his other attempts, for this time situations happen in a way we don't expect them. I'm usually not fond of this type of films, but this time I had a great surprise. I think, the Director is finally starting to master his style.
Yawar Mallku (1969)
great movie of the 60's
considering the turmoil in latinamerica in the late 60's, it's not hard to imagine a film like this being made. It's now, in the new century, that the real value comes afloat, and thanks to this little piece of Bolivian cinematography we can recall not only the political and social sensation in those times, but also understand some of the new up comings in that country, considering that it has only been months since Evo Morales arrived at the presidency.
Not a movie for a typical Hollywood style viewer, but anyone who values the social struggle and the making of low-cost films with great power and meaning will like this movie. Sadly it's very hard to get, but that will always be the problem with such movies.
El buen destino (2005)
Insight on Argentina
I saw this movie in the Valdivia Film Festival, in the south of Chile. The actors and roles are wonderfully executed, and they tell a story that doesn't intend on being pretentious, but tries to reflect a way of living in a country that was once rich but now has to overcome many problems, specially unemployment. The story unravels itself mainly in a restaurant/bar where many neighbors meet and they're stories collide. A very human film made by a woman that has dedicated her life to acting. This first film of her hopefully brings on a second one, in a country where cinema is taking up slowly. I come from Chile, but I feel very related to the Argentinian cinematography, and hopefully some day my country will live up to it's standards just like Argentina.
Voto + fusil (1971)
Chilean pre-coup film
This film was finished just after the election of Salvador Allende, the only Marxist candidate ever elected in a democratic way in the world. It accomplishes very well to show us the atmosphere that could be felt in those days (personally I was not alive then), where both sides, left and right wing, had their own segmentation: those who felt that the armed way was a solution, and those that believed in a more democratic way. The director declared himself Marxist, and the film is a small window of the processes happening in the left side of politics in Chile just before and after Salvador Allende came to the power. A possible coup was in the air, even 3 years it actually happened. Afer 1973, the director escaped to France, where he made other movies like "llueve sobre Santiago" (it rains over Santiago).
