Sonny (2002)
Just wasn't good.
First let me state that I love James Franco. I loved him in Freaks and Geeks and most of his roles ever since....but this movie was just silly. The actress that plays the main character Sonny's mother became so annoying and her phony accent is so grating you are tempted to turn off the movie half way through. James Franco seriously tries his best with a badly written script and not so qualified director. Nicolas directed this film in such an odd way. I don't think actors should assume they can be directors based solely on being in films. There is a little thing called education and experience and just because you have starred in 30+ movies doesn't mean you have the skills to direct a movie. Three quarters of the way into the film you can tell the actors have given up and just want to finish. I believe that James Franco only starred in this movie for experience. To push himself in ways his other roles didn't but that doesn't make it a good movie. It is almost painful to watch. I am from Mississippi, I have been all over the South and the North and I have NEVER heard accents like the ones these actors were using.
Why Did I Get Married? (2007)
It was excellent.
My friend and I went to see this movie yesterday, we just loved it. Yes the acting was not the best I have ever seen, and some of the scenery was obviously not naturally and some what unbelievable. The main issue with this movie is the horrible grammar written into the script. I have a bachelors degree in Journalism and English so every time the actor used incorrect grammar it jumped out at me. The instances of incorrect grammar were numerous. The characters in this movie were doctors, lawyers, and business owners but their grammar was atrocious. It did not make sense to me. Jill Scott did a wonderful job making her character sympathetic yet not pitiful.
Babycakes (1989)
Painfully Awkward.
Being a lady of size I found this movie exceedingly embarrassing. I remember seeing this movie for the first time when I was about 12 years old, then and now I get so unnerved by the lengths Grace goes to "catch" Rob. The movie is like Fat-Girl-Chick-Lit all stereotypes and hammy dialogue. Ricki Lake's performance is overacted and the situations she finds herself in ridiculous. No self-respecting plus size woman would grovel or moan about like Grace. The guy who plays Rob does a very decent job and tries to convince the audience he can handle Ricki Lake's Grace. It is just strange, this movie is good for a laugh and that is it. If you want to see a good 80's movie check out Teen Witch
P.S. The bathtub scene needs to be fast-forwarded through.
Secret Window (2004)
Excellent!
Spoilers! kinda of. I just wanted my fellow imdb users to know that they really need to go see "Secret Window", it is worth the money. Johnny Depp as always turns a character that could have been a bumbling idiot if played by someone else and turns it into a really interesting and watchable person. Johnny displays the personality of Mort Rainey so well that you can distinguish between the three personalities pulling at Mort's psyche. The supporting cast in my opinion is slightly annoying especially Timothy Hutton as Ted Milner the man that stole Mort Rainey's wife. The most annoying and surprising disturbing thing about this thriller is John Turturro's Mississippi accent! I am from Mississippi, I know the accent, his is totally wrong, so wrong that it gets to the point that it is offending to my ears and my southern pride. But all in all this is a great movie, one that people will enjoy and one that Johnny Depp should be proud of.
