Godzilla (2014)
5/10
How can they title this Godzilla?
11 June 2014
Although this remake of Godzilla was a significant improvement over the 1998 film, it still was a disappointment. I will start with the positives:

1) Bryan Cranston and Ken Watanabe... need I say more? 2) The CGI was beautiful! It was some of the best monsters I have ever seen. Godzilla looked the best he ever has.

Yes, the list is pretty short for the positives. So now the negatives:

1) Other than Cranston and Watanabe, the acting was just awful. Some dialogues just made me cringe. But overall, it is a Godzilla movie; so how much acting is really needed? That brings me to my next point.

2) Where was Godzilla through most of the movie? He is hardly in the movie at all. And when he is about to battle some monsters (I will hold back their names as to not give anything away), the film goes back to unnecessary character development. Then once these useless scenes are over, it goes back to the city to show it absolutely destroyed. The monster battles were the best parts of Godzilla movies. Why would they cut these out entirely?

3) The food source of the monsters was absolutely ridiculous. I think this was just an attempt to bring the movie back to the US. Stop trying to Americanize films and just film them where they rightly should occur.

Overall, this movie was incredibly boring due to the excessive character development that was absolutely unnecessary. I never cared about any of the characters. And for a movie about Godzilla, he is only in it for about 10 minutes of the two hours. What a waste.

The Pacific (2010)
Growing on me the more I reflect on the series
17 March 2013
I absolutely love Band of Brothers. It was a magnificent reflection of the European theatre of World War II between the Americans and Germans. It provided convincing visuals, character development, emotional connection and commentary on the politics of war. So naturally I was excited for The Pacific.

Let me say this first about The Pacific, it is not Band of Brothers. Rather than looking collectively at a specific company, it focuses on only several characters throughout the war in the Pacific theatre. This produced a disconnect between the viewer and the soldiers. I felt nothing when anything happened. I often asked myself what I was even watching. Band of Brothers brilliantly introduced each episode with the interviews of the veterans and the ongoing narration.

Overall, this series was incredibly disappointing. However, its biggest promise are the scattered commentary on war, mutilation of dead 'enemies' and genocide. It is these commentaries which I am now reflecting upon and find promising in the series.

In sum, if you are looking for something like Band of Brothers, then skip this series. If you can bear through annoying attempts at character development and pointless scenes, there are some great commentaries on war overall.

I am not giving a rating to the series, because I am conflicting what it should get. Rather, I would give a range between 5-7.5

Saving the Titanic (2012 TV Movie)
8/10
Great docu-drama without being overly tacky
31 March 2012
This docu-drama focuses on the various struggles of the engineers, electricians and workers in the bowls of the Titanic. The struggles present in the film not only relate to the sinking of the ship, but also ethnic and religious tensions which were prevalent in 1912.

The best thing about this docu-drama is that it is extremely informative while being entertaining. The set is actually quite good considering its budget and that it is a release-to-TV film. Yes, there are cheesy parts to create a connection with the characters in the film, and no it does not offer the heart-wrenching story expressed in Cameron's 'Titanic'. But it sets out what is intended, to tell the untold story of those who fought and died to keep the Titanic afloat for more than an hour and a half than what was expected, saving countless lives.

The reason for giving this docu-drama an 8 is that it offers a good story, decent acting (for a release-to-TV film), good effects, and its educational aspect. Improvements in the acting and the omittance of certain unnecessary story development would have made this film even better.

The Lorax (2012)
6/10
This movie had the Lorax, but where was Dr. Seuss?
4 March 2012
This movie is fairly entertaining for children. However, it leaves very little for others.

I went to see The Lorax because I have always loved Dr. Seuss. However, next to following the basic story-line from the book, there was really no Dr. Seuss to be seen. At no point were the fun rhymes from the book used in the movie. In fact, there were no rhymes at all. The voice acting was decent and the graphics were fine. However, I saw very little advantage seeing it in 3D. If they had just included more Dr. Seuss and less pointless musicals, this movie would have been much better.
