Cute and clever for young teens
2 April 2004
I watched this while babysitting my neighbor's kids ages 9 and 12. They liked it a lot, I thought it was okay. I got a little bored about half-way but not enough to turn it off, I wanted to see how they would wrap it all up.

It has some neat effects and the storyline is pretty good, every kid wonders what it would be like to do something amazing. The acting was pretty good, not Oscar-worthy but aside from from the Angie Harmon in the locker room scene it was cool. That scene was more than just a little disturbing. We all know that boys live for a peek at a woman but that crossed the border into creepy and really didn't serve any useful purpose at all. Girls feel uncomfortable enough when boys do that, making them feel like it's an acceptable way to behave is just wrong.

Final score. I give it a 5, if they had done the locker room scene better it would have gotten a 7.

Interesting character piece
2 April 2004
Last Wedding is a character driven piece with intriguing little peeks into the inner workings of people as they make their way through life.

Though sometimes the scenes begin to drag a little they then catch their breath and come back to life again. It's a good movie for a rainy day.

This movie explores the many tangled emotions that throw even the most confident bride and bridegroom into panic. And then there's life after the honeymoon. Whether you are about to be married, newly married or celebrating your 50th anniversary you'll find something that rings a bell of familiarity.

The abrupt ending, as previously mentioned, was a little disappointing but I'm sure we'll be seeing more of Benjamin Ratner and the rest of the cast.

Just a light snack, not a rich dessert

The acting of the main characters, Dan, Stella, John and Alex is stiffly amateurish. Conversations are stilted and without any sort of natural flow. The exhibitionistic behaviour of the Stella character is unnerving and lends nothing to the storyline which is, mischievous college students trying to come up with their next big prank. Theft is mentioned, theft is planned but not a real theft, just a make-believe theft. There's more but I can't give away the ending. I've heard rumours of a full-length feature being made, I don't see how they can do it with these actors in the lead, they could barely keep my interest for the 20 some minutes.

Some neat lighting and camera work, would be of interest to film students interested in the technical side of filmmaking but not much else of value in this almost too long short. I give it a 7 out of 10 for technical and a 2 out of 10 for artistic.

Dark Water (2001)
Muddy H2O

I saw this film (?) on pay TV a while back, it had an interesting premise (serial killer offing child molestors - are they vigilantes or murderers?) but that was it. I think Alan Smithee could've directed something better than this. Very bad direction, if any, wooden high-school play acting, fight sequences where the punches don't even connect but still make contact noises, the worse was putting the executive producer in a supporting role, we know how she got her job, maybe they should've hired real actors, I see the director is an actor, let's hope he stays with the acting cause directing sure isn't his calling... plus how do you take any psychological thriller seriously when the chief of police has lines like "we have a serial, and I am not talking Captain Crunch" puh-leeez!
