Canceled
10 February 2023
The show ends on a cliffhanger and is already cancelled. Good thing it's based on a book, I guess I can still get the full story.

The first two or three episodes are the best, you really get a sense of the place. It's that same excitement when you travel yourself to somewhere new. The excitement settles as the pace slows across the middle of the season, but the characters are wrong enough to keep your attention. The story is fascinating, but obviously there is no ending thanks to Apple canning the show early. Take that information as you weigh up whether or not you want to invest in 12 hours of television.

I'm not sure I saw the same movie as other reviewers.

Rex does a great job of playing his character, and though he is fascinating, he has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. He uses everybody around him, he's lying to everyone, he's insanely arrogant, he's grooming.... You can't route for this man. There's also no character ark, he never learns or self improves. He's arrogant and selfish. There's only so much Rex can do with a character before the audience gets to the point of questioning why the care. The script in a lot of scenes is lean leaving the cast to work it out for themselves. The key supports do a pretty good job but some of the smaller roles really take you out of the moment as you're aware your watching someone "acting". The comedy moments are all in the trailer & The drama isn't interesting after you loose interest in the characters. Shot on a shoestring budget and the production value is telling.

Didn't stop laughing
12 November 2022
I had my doubts on this one, as we all know, there are many old IPs that pump us up for sequels, only for us to wish they hadn't bothered. On top of that, even if it was true to itself, would I be bored with that humor now. Somehow they managed to keep on brand with the jokes yet still made it feel a little more clever than before. I cracked up so many times. & the story itself was actually pretty interesting too. And the music also was a Nice touch to make it feel like OG bravos & Butthead. For anybody who's been disappointed by a sequel or reboot in recent years, this will show you that it can be done well. I highly recommended for old fans and possibly some new.

Set up is promising, plot holes are punishing.
31 May 2022
A pretty good set up for a mindless action film. A bunch of stars I usually like, Nicolas Hoult, Jon Bernthal, Tyler Perry & Aiden Gillen all turn in sufficient performances, However I found the usually good Jolie not super believable playing one of the crew, like a fish out of water. The best performances came from the unknown cast members, the kid (Finn Little) and the wife (Medina Senghore).

It all felt pretty mediocre before the plotholes starting laying out thick and fast, but the third act just had me asking wtf every few moments. Some seriously lazy writing somehow managed to attract what looks like a decent budget. Seems a waste here.

I'm not sure I saw the same finale as other reviewers
7 May 2022
Everything is wrapped up quite nicely. All major & mid level characters (that are still alive) have all of their big troubles resolved and I can't imagine what these naysayers could possibly be looking for in another season. The Byrds being a happy family laundering cartel money protected by the fbi? I'm not sure all conclusions need to service your moral compass, but in this case they certainly wrap up any pressing drama. Favourite show ever with a fitting end.

Beautiful

It's a slow burn, but if you're ok with that, you're rewarded with strong performances, incredible cinematography and beautiful landscapes and a compelling lead character to root for.

For the fans
26 November 2021
If you played either of the first two games in your youth, you'll be grinning ear to ear throughout a screening. If you're unfamiliar to the source material, it may just come across like a cheesy horror flick.

But the characters, the monsters, the plot points, the obscure references, the sound effects, the throwbacks to solving clues to get from point a to point b, and most of all the sets have been created by folks who clearly were fans themselves. Some of the dialogue can be a little ham-fisted with its exposition, but it really doesn't matter if you're there for the nostalgia.

Great cringe comedy
26 April 2021
In the same awkward vein as the office, chad is a constant train wreck you can't look away from with a lot of laugh out loud moments. Not your traditional US comedy, very different flavour, perhaps that's why the humour isn't landing with everybody, but if you liked flight of the conchords, or the office, give this a go.

Great art piece, not kids entertainment.
27 September 2020
Not a movie for the kids, but if you were a fan of the Peter Pan story growing up, this art piece make constant reference to it whilst still being quite a different fantasy tale. While never really certain where the story tellers are taking you, if you sit back, relax & forget what you already know, it's a fascinating ride that will remind you of your younger self & just maybe reignite a few of your youthful selfs values.

Incredible performances from all the kids, gritty & beautiful landscapes & an Oscar-worthy score that really takes you in for the ride. Overall it is reminiscent of Zeitlins first film; Beasts of the Southern Wild, both stylistically & the content. Some incredible poetic lines will have you calling your mother when all is said & done.

No idea what's going on
24 March 2020
Two thirds of this episode was so dark it was unwatchable, I understand they're in a dark cave, but if you want your audience to have any idea what's going on, who's in trouble, what they're jumping over, what Carols mistake was, you still have to shoot it in a way that we can see. Still some nice moments with the older characters, but otherwise a disappointing mid season start after a decent improvement in the first half of season 10.

The critics got it wrong
23 December 2018
The most original film I've seen in years. On top of that, basing this on a true story, they didn't feel the need to hollywoodise the lead character, instead keeping him intact with all his quirks, insecurities & awkwardness. The tea scene with Carrell & Leslie Mann is probably the most awkward thing I've seen since the English office series & it works so well. The doll sequences are spectacular, if a little too dominant of the film in the first half, but it's a minor quibble for what is very original, heart breaking yet comedic viewing. Well worth the price of admission.
