The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
I adored this show, brilliant to rewatch
I loved this show, and it's such a shame that it doesn't get to have a genuine score on IMDb, which I think would be closer to 8.
There is room for improvement but the results were admirable with so much to establish. Many aspects added new strengths to Tolkien's world not seen in Peter Jackson's brilliant movies, such as the strong portrayal of the dwarves, the stunning, lived in feel of the cities and the fascinating and dangerously charismatic new version of Sauron.
The Halbrand reveal was done perfectly, and though I guessed his identity in episode three, this only made the rest of the season more enjoyable, wondering if I was right. It also made me instantly want to rewatch. So different to how I had ever imagined the character in the best way possible. More Sauron in season 2 has me itching to watch.
I think this show will mature really well and bring people round in time with a level of epic never seen before on tv. I can't wait.
WandaVision (2021)
Original, slow burn, bold storytelling from Marvel
This is a greatest hits ode to sitcoms over the years with the subtext of a woman dealing with grief and a greater mystery unfolding week to week that will eventually connect with the MCU proper and influence phase 4. Yes please. This is the sort of creativity I want to see from Marvel, a brave move that they must have known would alienate the more Michael Bay loving of Marvel fans. A lot of reviews seem to be frustrated that it wasn't the same as what's come before, but the trailers never hid that fact. Yes, this show requires a bit of patience and some faith in Marvel, but I think they've earnt that. Bring it on.
See (2019)
Just too boring
A lot have people have criticised the believability of the concept etc, but for me it's just extremely difficult not to fall asleep during episodes. They haven't made me care about a single character, each of which is two dimensional and some are outright annoying. I wanted to like it, and it's very beautifully shot, but they've made it difficult for me. However, Apple TV plus is not all bad. The Morning Show was fantastic and gave us one of the best season finales in recent years. Worth the subscription just for this. A very different show but complex, compelling characters and it keeps getting better.
The Morning Show: The Interview (2019)
On another level
This is what finales are supposed to be like. It was poised, confident and knew what it was about. I was at this show's mercy for an hour as it dug it's claws in and I just want to go back and do it all over again. Phenomenal performances, gorgeous cinematography, and some seriously brilliant final moments. Over the past ten episodes this show has grown into something truly special. The wait for season two will be torture
The Morning Show: Play the Queen (2019)
Brilliant episode of an infinitely watchable show
All the chess pieces are falling into place now, and this episode does a great job of setting things up for an explosive finale next week. As always, the performances are nuanced and on point, especially everyone's favourite network executive Cory Ellison, who is magnetic every second he's on screen. The writers continue to expertly craft conversations which maximise the complexity of the issues and potential for discussion after.
It's the sort of show that gives you plenty to discuss and contemplate once you've watched it and this episode is no different. Can't wait for episode 10!
