Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
Action packed but strange.
Although I'm not a massive Godzilla fan, my interests lie more on Kong's side. I mean ever since watching KING KONG 1933 my mind has been up its arse ever since, I just love it with a passion.
The only thing that ruins this latest instalment is the boring human segments and the way the monsters are shown.
They don't come across being 394 feet and 337 feet and more like human sized, does anybody get what I'm on about here.
Maybe its the cartoony cgi or the fact the characters now have far too many human characteristics that might be the reason they don't feel like giant sized bastards and wouldnt stand out in the planet of the apes movies, well maybe Godzy would look odd but that irrelevant to what I am trying to say here.
It's not a crap film but just just could of done with far less human interaction and better cgi.
But hey I didn't make this film as well as no other reviewer here did so really we should just enjoy it for what it is and maybe not try to belittle others work and concentrate on the good things in life.
Give Them Wings (2021)
Give them awards.
Absolute belter of a film ... Very well acted by everyone as you can see they all put their heart and soul into this. The film itself was gritty and heart warming all at the same time and left you feeling good afterwards which is quite rare in films nowadays. I for one thoroughly enjoyed it and was proud to say I attended the first Darlington premiere and witnessed the first reaction of the audience which was brilliant.
This film deserves more awards and the director did the book and Paul Hodgson justice and I think this may go down as another British classic comedy drama.
Dýrið (2021)
Unique but farkin slow.
Although it was a slow one it was still weirdly compelling and that twist at the end? Well I never expected that and I found myself saying .... 'Ooohhh bloody Nora yeah."
I liked it a lot but could have been a tad quicker in pace but it got there in the end or am I just an impatient git ??
Yes I am.
To Be Someone (2020)
Forget Quadrophenia before you watch this.
This is not a direct sequel to the brilliant Quadrophenia.
So don't compare it.
What you are left with is a fun, comedic, well made criminal story set in the mod universe. The new cast and the original cast are clearly having a ball and its great to see most of the older cast together again playing different characters.
Personally I liked it a lot because I understand the concept and I am glad it was made.
Vratar galaktiki (2020)
A fun romp with great special effects.
COSMOBALL was for me very enjoyable and although the crazy storyline was a bit OTT, I think that was the point. The effects were spot on and the action was fast and well executed. It has a great baddy, lavish sets and costumes and the overall production was brilliant.
The poor ratings for it are just unnecessary unless they're from actually more experienced directors, then I'd understand.
The only niggle I do have is I would have preferred to have seen it in it's original context instead of having it dubbed over but I'll just wait for the blu ray for that.
Great film from the Russia.
Love, Honour and Obey (2000)
Highly enjoyable gangster comedy.
I really enjoyed this gangster comedy caper that stands alongside Lock Stock, Snatch, Sexy Beast and the like and with its very talented star studded cast and great story, why the Hell not?
Fantastic film and I for one will add it to my collection.
Loved it.
Monster (2018)
Good book adaption.
Considering the low budget and the fact it was Matt Shaws feature film directing debut, all I have to say is WELL DONE. The overall story wasn't boring and the intense scenes worked for what it was trying to accomplish. I actually enjoyed it and you could tell the cast were having a blast even though the films content was sometimes near the knuckle. But that's Matt Shaw for you ... If you know his written work then dont expect this film to be a typical run of the mill horror story this is a psychopath serial killer plot with an extra pair of whatnots. I for one enjoyed it and will watch his next film ASAP. Again well done Matt and to all who were involved.British Horror, that's all I need.
Green Fingers (2019)
Funny stuff from V-Pac.
All just harmless fun as most situation comedies are, everyone gave great performances especially Velton and Pete who fed off each other brilliantly and you can tell it must have been a great laugh to film. Also Miss Compton was glorious in her role as the posh householder. Its not a big budget production but it amused me enough to give it a good rating. Well done to all.
A Dirty Weekend (2019)
Enjoyable North Eastern romp.
Highly enjoyable bawdy comedy set in the rural North East of England.
Some great comic moments with a cast and plot that ensures great performances and storyline. It is hard to believe it was made on a shoe string budget as Mark Kennys imagination is brought to life by not just the cast, great writing and direction but by the beautifully shot scenes and I'm not just saying that because I appear in it.
A triumph for all who contributed to this local film that looks set to put the small film makers of the North East on the map.
Head Full of Honey (2018)
Thoroughly enjoyable movie.
Never seen the German version but although I've read some bad reviews on here about this version I went in with and open mind and actually enjoyed it for what it was, Nolte's take on a man suffering from one of the worlds most cruelest diseases was great and at times quite heart breaking but when it was intentionally funny it did for me came across rather staged but his performance over blew that little niggle.
So with that, the film itself is very well told and deserves better treatment.
Hugely enjoyable fare and great performances from all involved.
Simon (2016)
Gritty, effective urban thriller.
What we have here is a piece of British filming that excels purely by the edgy fast paced driven editing and great scripting, the overall picture has that edge of the seat feeling where you are led to believe that the predator will in fact get his prey no matter what and that's the beauty of SIMON as anything could happen as it is quite unpredictable.
I am sick of everyday cliché riddled star studded Hollywood thrillers that only leave you empty. This film although obviously not a block buster it still carries a feeling of dread that some thrillers of its elk does not have. This film at least draws you in and is interesting enough to keep you till the end. Plus the acting of the main character was good enough to make you feel he is so unhinged even when he is acting normal.
It's rural, gritty and made with passion and that's what I like about it. All thrillers like this work because of its shall we say close to home direction and that's how the very first Texas Chainsaw worked purely because of its rawness.
I like this film very much and recommend it to those who appreciate urban filming.
The Good Dinosaur (2015)
Enjoyable children's animation.
OK how many times have we heard this story? Main character ends up lost, finds friend and when confronted by the bad elements of life they discover their inner bravery to steer them ahead in their life. Its not a unique tale but still its told very well by Pixar, the animation is outstanding although the characters seemed a little out of place with their cartoony style but that is easily overlooked by the way the movie moves along.
I cannot understand the many bad comments about this film saying it was too dark and scary for kids but people said the same about Return to Oz, Snow white, Pinocchio and even the Lion King and they are now deemed as classics. The Good Dinosaur although not in the same league as The Lion King is just an enjoyable romp and has many great things going for it and I as an adult enjoyed it, its a nice film and cannot see the problem with it being scary for the young ones.
Kids are a lot more tougher than some people give them credit for and lest we forget the days of old when we hid behind the sofa sh***ing ourselves because of the monsters from Doctor Who ... This film is nowhere as extreme and deserves better credit as a good wholesome family movie. 8 out of 10 from me.
Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands (2016)
This is not Game Of Thrones it is aimed at a younger audience.
Let me start off by saying that this is not a rip off of GAME OF THRONES or LORD OF THE RINGS as some people have stated as they are obviously unaware that story of BEOWULF was created centuries ago so you could say the others are rip offs. But really they're not as they're just in the same vain as all sword and sorcery fantasy stories are, so you cant really rip off a genre.
BEOWULF stands on its own as a thoroughly entertaining young adult show and after a great opening sequence and a solid story the whole first episode has left me wanting more. The actual story of BEOWULF is obviously going to slowly unfold as time goes on and that's OK with me as they are going to thrown in additional stories to keep the series going. The overall package itself was great and that includes, the solid structure of the story, the acting, the sets, the monsters and the soundtrack. There's nothing bad at all about this before the water shed program and I eagerly await the second episode as there's always room for a little bit of slashing swords and monsters on TV.
Extinction (2014)
Dinosaur film with an edge
As Dinosaur films go this is a great contender and nowhere near as bad as one reviewer commented and stands proudly next to Jurassic park,1 million years bc, valley of gwangi and other dino movies out there
The director took us into another world away from the norm as what started off as a normal exploration adventure turns out to be a battle for survival. The acting, the story, the effects and the camera work were all far better than some Dino films flying about and as for the dinosaurs themselves they were worth the wait. It is not overly violent or over the top which makes a refreshing change and the fact there is very, very limited CGI that in itself is an added bonus. So what you see is what you get.
So with that said it is an enjoyable movie and I am glad it is now part of my DVD collection as I do have a dear love for all things monster.
It has been pointed out that this is not found footage which I previously called it so I take my hat off sarcastically to the man who pointed that out and I have corrected my Title. Thank you for saving me from myself.
