Hitch-Hike (1977)
a mixed bag
6 August 2004
Odd and strangely compelling thriller from director Pasqualie Festa Campanile. The film has the usual quota of dodgy dubbing, questionable acting and awkward scenes for this genre but it does have an underlying power that keeps you hooked until the end. There are enough twists and turns in the script to keep you guessing - it took me by surprise and I've seen literally thousands upon thousands of horror thrillers. Ennio Morricone's score is again, quite unique and adds quite a lot to the film and the cinematography is outstanding and looks beautiful on the region 2 Anchor Bay disc. All in all, if you're a fan of 70's and 80's Euro horror you will want to check this one out.

powerful

This is raw, uncompromising stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if the stories about this causing riots in cinemas when it was released were true. William Sanderson plays one of the most detestable antagonists ever committed to celluloid - his character is so reprehensible it's sometimes quite hard to watch. The film is hard to defend but it does, undeniably exert a hold over the viewer that doesn't let go right until the end. The print used on Blue Underground's DVD is superb with strong colours and a very clean image - it's looks like it could be straight from the negative in fact. Worth seeing as a prime example of exploitation cinema at its most aggressive.

The Damned (1969)
Visconti masterpiece
28 July 2004
This really is Luchino Visconti's magnum opus - The Damned is an utterly engrossing work of art that grabs you from the start and doesn't relinquish its grip until the final frames. The accents from the international cast takes a little getting used to - the soundtrack is in English (some sync sound, some dubbed) and Dirk Bogarde's refined English accent doesn't really suit the part of a German industrialist at first but once you get used to these incongruities the cast seems perfect! The cinematography is beautiful, capturing the decaying elegance perfectly. The score by Maurice Jarre adds to the atmosphere nicely even if it is a little reminiscent of Dr Zhivago. The film's themes are quite challenging and sometimes uncomfortable to watch but it's always compelling and absorbing even at 2 hours 35 minutes.

The Sect (1991)
hugely entertaining
13 May 2004
I first saw this film prior to its original release in the UK at the London Film Festival where Michele Soavi himself was in attendance. Afterwards I shook the man's hand and congratulated him on a fine film. The whole audience was very appreciative really. That was the last time I saw it until I finally found it again on a fine import dvd from xploitedcinema. I'm glad to say it still holds up very well indeed - the story grips from the start and doesn't let go right up to the incredible ending. Ok, so the story may have echoes of Rosemary's Baby but how often do you see a truly original horror film ? I can only think of a handful. Track this film down and you won't be disappointed.

El Topo (1970)
incredible stuff
10 May 2004
Truly astonishing film from writer/director/composer Alejandro Jodorowsky. This is one of the most hypnotic films you'll ever see and is one that stays in the mind for days afterwards. Think Leone, Fellini and Peckinpah joining forces to make a mystical, existential and spiritual western and you're someway close to Jodorowsky's masterpiece. There are so many things to like and admire in this film from the sometimes purposely jarring editing and the beautiful music to the gorgeous vistas inhabited by a plethora of interesting and unusual characters. Track down a copy (Italy's Raro video currently has a decent dvd on release. I got mine from xploitedcinema) and you will not regret it. Be warned though - some of the images are pretty extreme, especially for 1971. A stunner and a definite must have for any serious film collector.
