Foundation (2021– )
1/10
Great saga, bad adaptation
7 September 2023
The original Foundation series (the original trilogy, not the sequels and prequels that proved to be, unfortunately, poor and misleading) have been a milestone not only in sci-fi literature, but in epic story-telling altogether. This TV show is a mess. It has no resemblance at all with the Asimov's saga. Nobody should deal with the Foundation if he was determined not to respect it at all. As a series, it has some good points, (some) decent actors and cinematography, a few good ideas (like the 3 emperors), but it also has a chaotic screenplay and plenty of awful acting. The Foundation saga in the hands of a good screenwriter could have been a sci-fi show greater than anything you've already watched, Star Wars, Dune, name it! Because the original story is so well-written and powerful. It was inspired by the history of the fall of the Roman Empire, and truly it is coherent and easy to absorb, like reading facts from real historic events. It has mystery, intrigue, thrills and suspense. But, is it blasphemous to claim that Mr. Asimov himself almost ruined his masterpiece when he was tempted to write sequels and prequels? Perhaps, he himself, in a way, allowed adaptations like this TV show.
