Huh? Why does everyone hate it? Weird.
24 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
My son and I just watched all the episodes over 3 days. The series was excellent. I thought it was way BETTER than season 1. It was an interesting story, fast-paced, and easy to follow. The acting was good. The cinematography was great. I love the scene where the boat is released from the aircraft.

Yes, there was the same unrealistic stuff found in all action movies - like the main characters escaping injury and managing to take down 1,000 enemies, and the political ramifications of US helicopters landing at the presidential palace and shooting up the place. But it's just a show.

The only thing that bugged me was that they made the Venezuelan opposition leader a socialist who would save Venezuela. The reality today in Venezuela is the opposite. Since my time backpacking through Venezuela in the 90s, the left wing socialist dictor Maduro has risen to power and destroyed the country and impoverished the people. But, hey, everyone knows that Hollywood has a political agenda with it's hatred for Trump at the core.

Am I missing something?
3 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
After spotting the high rating on IMDb, I decided to go see this movie. Beyond that high rating, I intentionally avoided reading any of the reviews. I wanted to go into the theater with a clean slate, without knowing the plot or having predetermined expectations.

Given my rating, you can see that I was disappointed. I enjoyed the development of the main character Mike Enslin. I also enjoyed how the hotel manager attempted to talk him out of entering the hotel room. By the time Enslin entered the room, I was ready for some scary stuff.

First chocolates appear on the pillow and the toilet paper is folded. Enslin reacts in a believable manner. He's freaked out. I'm encouraged and think to myself, this is going to be good. The people who made this movie understand that less is more.

But it's what happens next that was a big let down. The subtleness is quickly replaced by the predictable shotgun approach... Just blast the audience with every Hollywood scary trick in the book and hope that something works. Let's see, a clock radio that turns on by itself? Good, that's always scary. Objects that move around in the room? Good, you can't complain about that. Blood dripping from the walls and sink? Great. Ghosts that commit suicide? Good. Anything else? How about loud noises, shaking, fire, more shaking, messing up the room, more blood, etc etc. It's all good. And it's all been done before. Overstimulate our Attention Deficit Disordered audience with all kinds of stuff in quick succession, and they won't be able to look away.

Well, it didn't work for me. And you know what else? When I go see a horror movie in a theater, it's typical to hear several groups of girls in the audience yelling in fear at scary moments. But this movie had no scary moments. The audience was silent and disinterested. I felt no chill down my spine. Nothing. The Shining was 100x what this movie tries to be.

So who are all these people who are saying that it is one of the best horror movies ever? Friends of the director? Sorry, I just don't get it.

Donnie Darko (2001)
Disappointed
27 September 2004
I was confused after watching this movie. I didn't understand the point of the many plot twists and detours and decided to read the IMDb to figure out what I was missing.

But what is this? Almost everyone who loves the movie also claims that they don't really understand it! It is admired because it isn't clear what's going on. Well, I could write and direct a movie like that. Add some time travel, mystery, murder, darkness, weirdness, fear, unusual characters, chilling music, and prophesy into a convoluted plot and you would all call me a genius!

I conclude that Donnie Darko is open to 100 different interpretations. If you want to pretend that you are superior to others and truly understand what nobody else can, then go ahead and proclaim how great this film is. But I won't be fooled by you.

It takes talent to write a book or create a movie that cleverly ties all the lose ends together in the end. But anyone can create a pile of weird concepts that really don't tie together well - and that is what Donnie Darko is all about.

Who admires this movie? It seems to be primarily mid and late teens. That's who recommended it to me. Why does this group like the movie so much? I speculate it is because those teen years are often dark and confusing, where you have many questions and few answer - kind of like this movie.

Garbage!
15 April 2004
Did all of you watch a different movie than my wife and I watched?! This movie was garbage. Here's why:

1. The camera constantly shook, making it difficult to watch without getting sick to my stomach. It reminded me of the Blair Witch Project - which at least was interesting aside from the camera shaking.

2. All of the characters were unlikable. I couldn't care less about any of them.

3. There was no plot or purpose. Okay, I understood the premise of erasing memories and Joel's desire to hold onto the memories after committing to have them erased. But why all of the pointless, disjointed scenes? One after another. Pointless, meaningless snippets of their lives together. Who cares? Over and over and over until I felt like screaming, `Enough already! Get on with it!' There was no mystery or anticipation of something about to happen.

4. Weird new subplots were constantly added that only confused this confusing mess even further.

About 3/4 of the way through the movie, I turned to my wife and said, `What do you think?' Her response was, `This is the worst movie I've ever watched.' We walked out of the theatre glad to be out of there. I couldn't care less about missing the ending because, in our view, there was no story. This was only the second movie I've ever walked out on.

The whole thing seemed like a bad drug trip. What are you people who liked this movie smoking? For the record, we use IMDB to decide on a movie to see. I consistently enjoy most highly rated movies. But this highly rated movie was horrible.
