Where Are the Bredstix? (1999)
Awesome Cult Comedy
Warning: Spoiler Alert! This completely brilliant movie from director Matthew Tobey had me laughing from first frame to last. A mockumentary in the Spinal Tap vein, it's loaded with wall to wall in-jokes and obscure musical and pop culture references, such as allusions to the 70s bands Strawberry Alarm Clock and Klaatu. As Tommy Florence - a transsexual bass player obsessed with taking showers - star Anthony Lawry virtually walks away with the movie. Keep an eye out for his soap-on-a-rope electrocution gag, it's really something to behold. Equally funny is Chad Roberts as Mopsy Doyle, a down-and-out, shroom-addicted techno musician with some questionable claims to fame involving a run-in with Ringo Starr. And Sam Forsyth does well as bonked-out roadie Jack Samsonite. This film enjoyed a brief run in the midwest, playing midnight screenings in several small college towns in early 2000 (which is how I saw it). All these years later, I've never forgotten it. I wish the producers would issue it on DVD or make it available via online streaming!
