Godzilla (2014)
Great experience for Godzilla fans, not so much for the rest
As a long time Godzilla fan, the 98' movie was like an ice pick stabbed in my heart - horrible. Big G was reduced to a scared, gigantic iguana that ran around the city and got killed by a few missiles... yikes! Naturally when I heard about this one and watched the first trailers I was stunned, and my expectations were high - especially after just finishing the Breaking Bad series and expecting similar performance from Bryan Cranston ( Who, to my surprise, was not actually the main character of the movie - something that I thought after watching the trailers). Although the director himself is still quite inexperienced and I hated his latest ''Monsters'' movie, I thought he may be able to pull this off properly.
However, unlike the awesome trailers, the movie doesn't really deliver the same ''feeling'', and too much of the runtime focuses on the human characters, very little on big G himself. There are several scenes where my inner fanboy took the better of me, and my heart literally started pounding in my chest ( the first full reveal of the G himself - truly stunning), and the CGI effects and design of the various beasts were commendable, however the movie is seriously lacking in most other areas. The movie is thus watchable, but ( apart from a few really stunning Godzilla scenes), unfortunately doesn't quite live up to it's name, or hype.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013)
A bunch of incoherent scenes and lazy writing ruined a possible gem
Unlike most of the people here, I really loved the first movie - it was a bit long at times but it had it's moments ( prime examples being Smaug's attack while Bilbo said ''The first they heard was a noise like a hurricane coming down from the north'') or Thorin's dwarven song ''misty mountains'' that just won't leave your ears. It had the pacing, was visually stunning, had proper music, lighting and had a proper ending - NONE of which are present in the second movie.
The movie has no intro - we are just thrown into a orc chase while the dwarfs are hiding, and it just becomes more incoherent after that. The story is nowhere to be found, it's mostly just a bunch of action scenes one after the other - pretty much it's orc attack, Beorn, orc attack, Gandalf leaves, spider attack, elf attack, orc attack, elf dungeon, orc attack, elves vs orcs, barrel ride, orc attack, Sauron, orc attack, dragon, orc attack, dragon, END.
The music was weird and out of place, at least they could have used some lotr-esque music like in the first part - the whole lighting in most of the movie was weird and wrong, as if unfinished - and several GoPro shots during the barrel chase - what the hell PJ?
The movie started at a weird moment and we are cut off in the middle of an action sequence, and for all the praise I have for Smaug's design and PERFECT evil voice by Benedict Cumberbatch, a dragon does not a movie make. Mixed feelings about this one.
Beowulf (2007)
Despite all the hate, this is a very good movie
Hearing all the hate for this movie, not just from this site but from my friends also, I placed this movie on the end of my ''watch list'', and as a result, forgot about it completely. All I knew is, and I quote my friends here - that the movie was supposed to be a ''weird mix of Lord of the rings and Shrek, not quite a movie and not quite a cartoon either'', and as a result I didn't even see it in the cinema, instead going to watch ''I am Legend'' and ''Transformers'', and man, was that a mistake!
So there was this one night where I had absolutely nothing to do, I just watched all the movies available, including a mediocre horror ''The hills have eyes'' and listing all the movies I had available, I came upon this one. I said to myself - hell, I can think of a worst way to spend this evening, and decided to grab a bowl of popcorn and turned on the movie.
Several minutes in I noticed that it's not a real movie, but rather a detailed animated feature film, however as the movie went on I completely forgot about it as I enjoyed one of the more epic fantasy movies I have seen in recent years - and I've seen quite a lot.
While not really true to the poem, and not fit to stand next to really epic fantasy movies like the Lord of the rings, this gem had enough action and fantasy to keep me at the edge of my seat. And not to mention that I cursed my friends that we didn't go and watch the cinema release of the movie, opting for the mediocre ''I am Legend'' instead...
Werewolf (1995)
Worst movie I've ever seen
Oh man, where to begin - I remember watching this as a kid and I was really scared, and when I found a copy of the movie made by MST3k I re-watched it and laughed literally to tears. Not sure where to begin with this one, either with Sam the guard that guards the house or Yuri with that hair of his - everything is just awful!
- The actors have so many different accents among them literally anyone can watch this movie and understand some part of it, and yet you need subtitles to understand it all in common English
- The actors have no mind whatsoever, doing things like jumping out of the car when they see the werewolf outside crawling ( why not just run it over?) and then get stuck in a 1 inch puddle for 3 minutes
- Yuri. His wicked hairstyle changes every other scene, from color to shape it goes from black and brown to gray, yellow and white and up, down, short, long or to the sides - sometimes in the middle of the actual scene. He also goes around and turns people into werewolves with his trusty syringe for no apparent reason what so ever.
- The ''werewolf'' and I use that term loosely - It is worse then Yuri's hair, sometimes it looks like a bat, sometimes a monkey, other times either a cat/dog/bear/bug/chewbacca but never the animal it should be - a wolf. Again it has the ability to drive cars and kill people over long distances using it's breath, and can turn people into werewolves without even touching them? Rubbish
- Sense. This movie has none at all, no story, no nothing, from the start to finish nothing the characters do makes any sense - a werewolf comes into your house ( using the front door mind you) and what do you do? Well you walk towards it yelling thing like oh god help me please! A werewolf is in the attic and you go up to talk with it while your ''guard'' is praying for the police?
I never watched a movie that was such a mess, to make such a movie is just insulting - I think every would-be-director out there should watch this steaming pile of **** so he/she can see how to NOT make a movie.
Life of Pi (2012)
A very good movie
I had doubts about this one - many people said that it was stupid and boring, and that it would end up as a turkey, a flop. Sadly I did not watch this one on the big screen, but waited for a blu-ray release so that I may watch it at home, in peace - what I found out really took me by surprise! This story was very deep and heart breaking, a story about survival facing impossible odds, in the middle of the open seas with little food and water, and a lifeboat that's more hostile then the sea below it.
The real movie-turner here was the ending, when Pi's story isn't taken well by the insurance agents ( since it's much too fantastic) and he explains that the whole story is in fact a metaphor - the animals were in fact people, and the tiger was in fact Pi himself. This made the movie even better in my eyes, and answered some questions about the story itself, and the ''real'' story was much too horrific to be displayed outright - a fact even the Japanese insurance agents seem to acknowledge. Pi is shown as a great story teller, and all pieces fall into place, all of this giving us a very solid, heart-warming story, and it's up to the viewer to decide which story is true.
There were some bad points to the movie of course, simple things that could have been done better: The use of CGI was obvious at some parts, but still I can't remember seeing better animated animals in any other movie ( I'd still go for live animals any day, and if a real tiger was used this movie would score a solid 10 for me - I understand that safety is primary when working with big, dangerous animals, but a LOT of movies have used trained bears, lions and tigers before, with great effect)
All in all I'm very pleased, especially after I learned that M. Night Shyamalan was not going to write and direct this project - that would have been... a DISASTER :/
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
That was amazing!
After I read up all the critical rubbish about the movie I can tell you - I was afraid they might have messed up big time.
The high score here ( 8.7 at this time) could have been from fans and die hard fanatics of the series, and the critics pointed out everything - from bad acting and cheesy story, overblown special effects and childish monsters, and even the length and use of 48 fps... And me, the idiot, believed them and went to the theater expecting to be let down - BOY was I wrong there!
The movie was amazing! For the whole 3 hours I was glued to my seat and when the movie ended - the whole theater audience stood up and gave a thunderous applause, now that should say something about how good the movie was. Given that I am a fan of the series and enjoyed the return to Middle Earth, I'm giving this movie a full 10 - now I just have to wait for the second part, and when that's done, for the third one... Ah man, I HATE waiting! :D
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
Awesome piece of work!
It starts of like all the rest of the stupid boring thrash monster movies of the past few decades, the story is predictable, nothing is scary just gallons of blood... and that's the point!!!!
Ah for a horror movie fan like myself this movie was just eye candy once I understood what's going on, I just couldn't stop laughing! Awesome piece of work, but I was quite surprised that almost half the cinema gave the movie a big BOO at the end, I mean seriously??? Obviously they didn't see the point of the movie, it's a metaphor as big as the planet itself!!! I mean for any horror movie fan who watches it and says ''I don't get it'', he should throw himself out of the window!
Anyway this is a movie any horror movie fan should go and see, it's bound to make them laugh and answer all the questions they once asked when seeing dumb B movies, and after all - the audience that BOOed the movie and wrote bad reviews here are the angry Gods themselves, aren't they?
Srpski film (2010)
What the hell did I just watch?!?
OK to start out me and my friends were talking about awful movies - the kind that makes your stomach turn around and where you have to turn away from the screen on some parts... Movies like Hostel, Saw, Human centipede all came to mind, and then one of my friends mentioned this movie, A Serbian film, he noted that he didn't watch it since he didn't have the stomach for it...
Sounded great so I got this movie and watched it, only to find myself staring at the screen at the end and saying Jesus Christ!!!!
Back to the movie - in essence it's a porn movie mixed with Hostel, so all the sick bastards out there who love blood, pedophilia and necrophilia are bound to love it, if even they don't find it disgusting... I seriously don't know what kind of sick person would give this a positive review - sure the acting is great, but there are certain things that you just don't, I repeat - DON'T DO!!!
The Grey (2011)
A very good movie, but Wolf-Taken? Hell no!
Yes, I was furious at first - seeing the trailer I was expecting some sort of Wolf-Taken cross where Liam Neeson is a badass fighting wolves with his bare fists, so me and my friends were all prepared to see some action! However it soon became obvious that the movie will be a story of survival and not an action packed thriller we were expecting - we all left the theater saying things like What the **** was that, where was the action, stupid movie and similar, but after I came home I started to think, and realized the movie was not that bad - In fact it was a very good survival movie and very touching at times, but the trailer showed the movie in a very, VERY wrong way - I'm certain that's the reason for all the bad reviews the movie got...
I liked the movie very much, especially when I saw it the second time later and knew what to expect this time - There are people who will like it, and there are those that will hate it, but all in all I think this movie was worth my ticket in full!
The Dinosaur Project (2012)
Not very good, but not bad either
Seeing this on IMDb and the low rating it has I was expecting another piece of trash movie to just pass a few hours of the day, and man was I taken by surprise - It wasn't actually all that bad!
Considering the low budget the CGI dinos are very well done - most high budget movies have similar if not even worse CGI, and the acting was dull at times but not that bad either. As for the story that was OK at first, there were a few laughs like when the camera guy charged into the forest for no reason and got killed, but all in all the movie is not the piece of crap people say it is - far from it!
I'll give it a solid 3 for the very good CGI of the dinos, another 2 for the solid acting and very good shots of the jungle and rainforest, and 1 for my surprise since I was expecting a very bad B movie.
