Obsession: Dark Desires (2013)
Scary AND Real- just a partial spoiler not the ending- some details
I watch ID quite a bit. A lot of times I will have the TV running in the background while I am online or playing a game. ID has produced many good shows. This one blows the pants off Stalked. The episode I saw at first was just a t the periphery, but as I heard more, I had to pause it and come to a stopping point in the game. Something about that particular episode caught my attention. In this episode it starts out with a woman receiving stalking-type phone calls. It reaches the point where he is describing what she is doing so she knows that she is being watched. Then he starts talking about raping her. As the calls continue, he gets more and more graphic, vile, and violent. The culmination (not the last call, but the one that grabbed my attention)is one where he calls , but doesn't really talk. Instead he leaves the phone hanging so she can hear these inhuman sounds that she finally realizes is a woman whimpering in terror. Then she starts hearing hair-raising screaming. The guy is torturing and raping a woman as she listens horrified. Well, that is just a taste. I have to say it was one of the creepiest things I have seen including actual horror movies and it's REAL!!! I don't know how they will top that episode, but if they do...
Irréversible (2002)
Disappointing for its hype
I am sorry, this film just didn't do it for me. I can't tell you how disappointed I was after seeing it on a "Most Disturbing" list and then watching it. There are only two "shocking" scenes and they are not that shocking to be honest. People talk about the realism and sure it looks fairly realistic, but that isn't hard to do when you don't show much or the scene is so dark that you can barely make out more than silhouettes. If you want to be "shocked", then pass on this film. It isn't really a bad film per se- just not what it is advertised as. Wow, I need two more lines- fine. 99.9% of the movie is about an idiotic, annoying protagonist- partying, acting the fool, or on a mission for "revenge". The whole situation occurs because he is a selfish oaf and then his actions following (or in the manner the film is shot, preceding) the situation.
Harold and Maude (1971)
One of the best!
Everything about this show was great- the writing, the casting, the story, and, of course, Cat Stevens! This is one of the most uplifting stories ever. This is a story about life, love, and learning to love life, yourself, and others. It is about learning to grab life with both hands and experiencing as much as you can. The beginning is a little slow. There is nothing flashy at all about this movie. It is as straightforward as Maude. Unfortunately I have a feeling that the story would be lost on today's youth which is a true shame. This movie got me through some of my lowest points in life. It is tied with The Wall for my all-time favorite movie which is interesting because one would be hard-pressed to find two such diametrically opposed films. This is a "must see". If your spirit is in need of being lightened, then this is your movie. It delivers its message without being sappy, trite or overly sentimental.
Deadly Women (2008)
Fascinating
Okay, okay, here is my disclaimer: I am a hardcore true crime junkie. I believe that even someone who is not as "into" true crime as I am will enjoy this show. Each episode is a triptych of women murderers with a certain theme (sometimes a little tenuous). I never realized that there were so many women killers. The series covers murderers from all the way back to the 1700s up to the present. One thing that I wish would be done differently would be to include non-Western murders, but this could be because it is hard to get medical records, coroner reports, eyewitness accounts, interviews, etc... The show is as thorough as it can be. Truly one of my very favorite shows.
Babylon 5 (1993)
Sci-fi at its best
This is one of the best science fiction series in TV history. I could almost give it a 10. It is on my top three sci-fi shows (not including Dr Who because, well Dr Who is Dr Who) alongside Farscape and Firefly. I like to watch this series every 5 years or so. The show's approach to the interaction between aliens is well-worked. What- the aliens all don't breathe oxygen and speak English?!? Another thing I appreciated about the show is that, just as in reality, there is really no "GOOD" even though there is evil in he form of bigotry and prejudice and, later in the series, in the form of the Shadows. It was definitely a good show and the fact that it ran for as many seasons as it did reflects that.
America Unearthed (2012)
So, so disappointed
I was extremely excited by the idea for this show. In theory this could be an awesome series. The only problem is that there is so much emphasis on the "in theory" that the rest of the sentence is rendered meaningless. There is still so much more to be learned about man's time in North America. What are the current thoughts on NA possibly being colonized by European Paleolithic people? What happened to the Clovis Culture? etc... Instead Wolter is off chasing will-o-wisps, obvious folklore, and, putting it lightly, extremely dubious "artifacts". He is like a boy on the cusp of puberty who isn't *quite* ready to give up Santa Claus. For example, on the last episode I watched, he was searching for "evidence" that Vikings had penetrated much further west than believed. One piece of "compelling evidence" was a "giant" skeleton of a person possibly close to 7' tall!!! He spoke to a true forensic expert who patiently explained that a disarticulated skeleton in a grave can appear to be of a much larger person than it actually is due to the fact that the bones are not fit together snugly withtin the sockets. He basically disregarded that out of hand. It is also "amazing" that his pet theories always seem to hold up with the flimsiest "evidence' No doubt if he had Joseph Smith's hat, he would become very excited and claim that the indentations of the gold tablets are clearly visible. The only value in this show is for entertainment.
Shatter Dead (1994)
I liked the ending- and no, I did NOT include it in the review.
Yes, the movie was pretty bad. The effects were bad, the acting was bad, yadda, yadda. It was funny to see the zombies as poor pathetic creatures- not even an attempt to make them scary- not even funny scary, just sad. Poor babies... Will eat brains for food/money. There are two things that I did like. I thought it was pretty cool that someone would WANT to be a zombie to "stay pretty forever". What made me give it a better than most reviews (maybe all?) was the ending. It really made it for me. If you do want to see a different take on any other zombie movies out there, then I would (not highly haha) recommend it.
