The Sinner: Part VIII (2018)
No consequences
I find this a lot with TV shows where characters never experience any real consequences. The shows where they do, even when you have sympathy are the ones that are the most gripping. Shows like this where we are given a fairytale happy ending are just disappointing.
I've got a couple of points I want to make and there will be spoilers ahead.
1. Whilst I can see the kid really felt guilt and shame for his actions, especially once he realised his victims were actually trying to help him, that still doesn't make up for their murders. I feel like most children wouldn't immediately react to being kidnapped by people he loved and trusted with murder. Not before trying to run away or call home. I know there was this idea of a new beginning after death, plus the seriously messed up upbringing but he still knew what he was doing and could still be a danger in the future. There was nothing to show he wouldn't have this reaction again. His punishment felt too light considering he was a 13 year old who not only killed two people but did it in such a planned and meticulous way (he had to find the leaves and make the tea, this wasn't an instinctive reaction or self defence, he thought it through).
2. The 'mother' Vera also received no consequences. She is the person who deserved them the most surely. She raised this child in an abusive household which she was in charge of. She was present for and sanctioned a lot of violence. She stole a child from his mother. And then kidnapped him again after he was arrested.
I feel like there needs to be some kind of repercussions here?
3. Who was that body that was found in the car in the lake? Did we ever find out? I feel like I missed that bit. They thought it was Marin, but then she was alive so then they just moved on and never addressed it. Also did they kill off that evil cult leader guy? Was he the one in the car. Because I think they said they believed it to be a woman. I dunno, I was left confused there.
Mostly this show was just very anti-climactic and left me with a lot of questions. The first season was brilliant. This season kept me gripped the whole way through then left me disappointed by the end. I wanted more from it.
Also the two protagonists, Harry and Heather (?) were so blah - their characters were not interesting and the juxtaposition with Harry's mother left me with more questions and was frankly just distracting. It wasn't necessary.
This season wasn't awful, I found the story interesting the whole way through, I just felt let down by the ending as I feel like it was just too easy, too happily ever after and that doesn't feel right for a show as dark as this.
