The Marvels (2023)
Don't believe the reviews
A lot of the reviews for this the 33rd installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are bashing this latest installment. I'm here to tell you that like butts they are all different and some of them stink.
The movie is well done in that it fills in the story of what Captain Marvel did when she got to Hala. It gives you more of a continuation of Ms. Marvel and an endnote on WandaVision and Monica Rambeau's arc.
The villian is forgettable and is a foil that brings the entirety of the movie together but the true vision of the director is achieved through the final fight and denouement.
Though it is a little transparent where the fight ends up, the set-up for the continuation of phase is spot on.
This movie is a fun movie. You have to go in with an open mind and open heart. If you are a fan of the character Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), she lights up the screen when she is on it. Teyonah Parris is fantastic as Photon and she is lovely, funny and smart. Brie Larson is Brie Larson, I'm not a big fan but I do respect what she brought to the character of Carol Danvers.
Bottom line - As a lifelong comic book fan, this hits a lot of milestones. It has nods to Mar-Vell, Young Avengers, the 80's and 90's of Marvel Comics and the shows on Disney Plus.
Do not let the critics crush this movie, the director and the actresses.
Last but not least, the mid-credit scene will have every MCU/MC fan explode in a ball of happiness.
Black Widow (2021)
Goodbye and Good Riddance to a bad part of the MCU
As a long time comic reader, I am a fan of the Black Widow. The comic version. She is a character that has deep roots in the comic universe and they were wasted in the Avengers movies and when she had a chance to become something bigger they had the wrong actress. So when you have this actress in a vehicle that is supposed to be her origin/swam song you expect a huge kick ass movie. FAIL!!!!! Scarlett Johansson is wooden and just not what you expect as her final movie to be present in the role. She is carried by her cute/funny as hell co-star Florence Pugh. This girl carried the movie and when she shows up down the road in the MCU will be well received and will be a force to be reckoned with.
Overall, I went because I wanted it to be good. I will be forced to buy it because I am a slave to the Disney/Marvel machine. I will not enjoy it though.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 16: The Rescue (2020)
This is the episode that pays tribute to all the fans of Star Wars
I'd like to point out that there are some 1 star reviews that are written by people who need some happiness in their lives. This episode is the culmination of 2 seasons of greatness that brought together decades of Star Wars history. The episode started with a WTH moment and ended in making many people (even this grown ass man) shed tears. If this episode had to be rated on tears the buckets shed would have it at over 1 million. This is a resume builder something Kathleen Kennedy and the Disney execs should take note:
Dave Filoni
Rick Famuyiwa
Carl Weathers
Peyton Reed
Robert Rodriguez
Taika Waititi
These are directors to put on the short list to director any movies. Let Jon Favreau write, produce collaborate with these guys on the movies and you can beat Endgame or Black Panther.
Suicide Squad (2016)
Don't let the critics fool you
So I went to see Suicide Squad yesterday. Let me start by saying that DC has taken a step in the right direction. What they have started to do is make the continuity of their movies work so that every movie is starting to tie in. Much like everyone in the past few weeks with the release of the Batman V Superman: DOJ I watched the movie again. I still have no love for Zack Snyder. It is apparent that he has an intense dislike for Superman and that he has a darkly smudge soul so he has no happiness but it is glaringly apparent that he has some kind of direction. He just needs to get the proper coordination. Moving past that David Ayer, who is a fantastic director has a very dark and funny look on life and his take on the Suicide Squad is a refreshingly view at what makes a bad guy. Is it what they do or is it what they are? The answer may surprise you. The movie tries in ways to be fun and other times darkly serious. If you are looking for a Marvel funfest of bright colors and showy fights then you are in the wrong movie. It is dark and scary. Gruesome and gritty. I wouldn't let a kid see this because it is exactly what you would expect a movie about villains doing villain things to be like.
Positives: 99% percent of the featured cast. Stand outs were Will Smith, Viola Davis, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto. The action scenes were dynamite and the cameos by the 2 heroes were perfectly shaped into the plot. The dynamic of the Joel Kinneman and Will Smith was very interesting to see. Viola Davis captured the essence of Amanda Waller. My wife thought that Margot Robbie's turn as Harley Quinn was not a stretch for her because she can't be that cute and not be crazy. (Arleen Sorkin should be proud of her). Jai Courtney made me like Captain Boomerang and not think of him as a cheesy villain that fights the Flash.
Negatives: Katanna seemed to be a forced character in the movie. The story lost a little pace and the marketing department used too many of the great scenes as trailer bait so there was a lot of spoilers due to the trailers. Overall as a comic book fancier, I give it a 8 out of 10. The DC universe will have to bring everything back together in the upcoming years to correct the missteps that they have started to make up for it.
Ghostbusters (2016)
You'll want to ghost. Buster.
This is a travesty. The movie is a waste of celluloid and they don't even use that format anymore. There are cameos from the original cast with the exception of Rick Moranis and Siguorney Weaver. Why? Hopefully, because they saw the writing on the wall and took a pass. Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig did this with such lackluster I was ashamed for them. Paul Feig, I would ask how you went from great movies like Bridesmaid and Spy to this drivel? So you had a $165 million dollar budget and they roped you into this. It isn't about sexism. It's about doing a good job and the movie fails. It doesn't have the heart in it. It goes for quick humor and fails. Pratfalls and kind of gross out humor is what is tried to sell when you see this. I recommend you take a pass and teach Paul Feig that he can do better. Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, need to go back to a thing that works for them and not get caught in the hoopla of Hollywood.
Straight Outta Compton (2015)
Straight Outta History
I have read a bunch of the reviews. An awful lot of the reviews are trying to start a race flame war that with ignorance and just sad, sad words. Let's get something straight. This movie doesn't glamorize the time that it is portraying. It doesn't paint the members of N.W.A. as saints and healers. They are the product of what was around them. They are men who took their talent and made music that entertains millions and reaches across racial lines to unify us as a people to understand that we don't have to be oppressed. We don't have to be scared. The used the weapon of the time to strike back and the MAN did not like it. He came after them with and tried to intimidate but they didn't back down. None of them. This movie took me back to that time. I remember all of that turmoil. The strife the change in music. Now, I look at it and say these guys did something. This movie may take a few liberties with the stories. They change a lot of things but it captures the essence of N.W.A. If you want to taste the late 80's - mid 90's. To get a feel of how it was check this movie out. You'll be impressed.
Fantastic Four (2015)
If you are a FF fan you will love it. Don't take it out on Trank because of Fox
This movie was what one would expect for the FF if they were to be brought from the comic pages to the big screen.
First, lets start with the fact that like all origin stories, the tale must be told from a point of view that not everyone will be familiar with the characters.
Second, the characters have to be fleshed out in a few scenes before we get to the action and more so with characters of this variety that have fantastic powers (pun unintended), the idea that you can fit so much history in a short time is unexpected. Josh Trank, you did a bang up job.
I realize that most people went in with the idea of the previous FF movies but lets be real. Those were camp. These characters all play a pivotal role in the Marvel Universe and if I were the Fox I would use this as a spring board for more use to keep the fans coming back for more. If this was a bad superhero movie then I shudder to think what people think is the best. I give it an 8 out of 10. It needed more work but we won't see it because they have probably already canned any sequels.
Trainwreck (2015)
How to ruin the summer
So the hype about this movie was Amy Schumer's move from the small screen to the big screen. I admit I didn't know squat about her and the trailers made this movie seem like it was going to be the funny romcom to break up the summer of explosions. Being married and sharing the fun of picking movies my other half wanted to go see this. Boy, were we disappointed. It had a moment of chuckles in the beginning and then it fell flat on its face. I was so disappointed in this crapfest. Here are the issues that I had:
It was extremely offensive to women. It was offensive. It promoted a very promiscuous and dangerous lifestyle. It pandered to the lowest common denominator of humor.
I was disgusted with Ms. Schumer's performance. It was like she was playing herself or even better. What the lead character from Sex in the City would have been like if she had no class, style or discretion.
If you have a choice go see something else or rent something else. You will be better for it.
Guilty Until Proven Innocent (1991)
Well played. A little rough around the edges but good
My girlfriend bought this movie and said she bought it because of the jacket. I was kind of hesitant but because the only other movie to watch was 3 hours long I went with it. Well needless to say I was hooked. I watched this movie and was just in awe at the travesty of justice this poor kid wen through. If my attorney had screwed up as bad as she did I would've had a kitten right there on the floor. Brendan Fraser did a good job at acting like a scared kid. A bit overacting at times but good. Martin Sheen was Martin Sheen. He was the dad you'd want in your corner. I would highly suggest picking this up. It's available at Walmart for like 5 bucks.
La nymphomane perverse (1977)
Midgets, Threesomes, Foursomes, Orgies and More
OK....There is something to be said about the French. They sure can make an adult flick. I happened upon this film and can say that it is one of the freakiest flicks I have seen. (That was before I saw Caligula) The premise is that a hairy dude marries a virgin and bring her to his Château. After he consummates the marriage he rolls out on his bride but not before telling her not to go into any of the other rooms. Well you can imagine from there the wild and exxxtremely erotic adventures that ensue. All that I can say is that it goes from hot to extremely hotter to can that be legal? It's also interesting to note that this was shot in a time of adult video where the starlets were real deal pretty or beautiful. No silicon, no extra makeup natural beauty.
I found this to be a staple of any adult video purveyors collection if you have a copy keep it and make a back up. If you find one hold on tight.
EuroTrip (2004)
Great movie
I read a few of the comments on the movie and a few of the replies and I have to say that some people need to pull their heads out of their anuses. The movie was funny and made light of a very laughable set of situations. It's a common known fact that when Americans go over to Europe that a vast majority of them are ignorant of the culture and geography. They only know about the things that are highlighted in the news and by people who have been/lived there. Sex and drugs. This movie isn't made to cater to the older crowd but was made to entertain the basest of our intellect. I for one found it hilarious because the movie ribbed every aspect of people and was just damn funny. If you want to watch a movie for correctness watch a historical documentary or a biographical film. Otherwise just enjoy the show!!!!
Don't spend the money, if you don't have the money.
Pitch Black (2000)
Can't wait for the sequel
This was a great movie and the sequel should know our socks off!!! The action will be nonstop and I just bought the special edition DVD with the animated background story similar to the Animatrix. This will put Vin Diesel back in the spotlight and hopefully get him the coveted role in Spider Man 3 as Venom. He would be the most logical choice for the role. Back to PB this movie even though it is a indie thriller, it has a great story and characters with backgrounds that scream for you to want to learn more. If they were to do books or comics it would be a great read. There was one thing that I felt was a little under done. The ending it needed a little work but not every movie will have the best ending.
