Related to François Truffaut's "Mississippi Mermaid" (1969)
21 January 2011
This movie seems to be a remake of François Truffaut's "La sirène du Mississipi" (1969, "Mississippi Mermaid"). Although this might be becauseboth quote Cornell Woolrich's novel "Waltz into Darkness" as source.

I consider Truffaut's movie to be of better make. The erotic charge is much less in Mississipi Mermaid. The tension between (young) Belmondo and Deneuve is of a very different nature than the relationship between Jolie and Banderas. If you're looking for "hot scenes", go for Benderas & Jolie, if you're into classic cinema, then Truffaut is your choice (but you probably already know that.

Elektra (2005)

Lousy and disappointing, except for the FX

What a disappointment! I wasn't expecting "too much" and barely know the comics, but I did expect something with a minimum of a story and scenario... The scenario has gaping holes big enough to pass a stratocruiser through and so many inconsistencies as to approach SciFi by sole virtue of being called a scenario. The characters are inconsistent (except for the bad guys who are what they are) - especially Elektra - there is not even an attempt to explain why she changes side or why she decides to do what she does. J.Garnder does a good enough job and both special FX and acting are OK, it's just the story that is... somehow absent.

Witty, fun, A Good Time (tm)

Don't go see this if you don't have a sense of humour or if you're an obstinate chauvinist or if you don't understand French. This movie likes to turn things around, it's a breeze as well as some sort of a hurricane on bad times, habits, things you do just because you're used to do them or because that's the way things are done here.

Now, if you feel like having your mind blown open, or if you feel a bit down and need A Good Laughter or two or three... what are you waiting for? Judith is as glamorous as ever, Anne is as beautiful as usual and Mathilde is as dry and witty and sometimes mean as necessary. I promise you won't feel down or depressed when you leave your seat :-)

Ahem! Now, if you're 40-ish, still single, again single, possibly getting bald... well, don't take it too personal ;-)

Seductive, enthralling, surprising
24 April 2004
I remember seeing this movie whenit was released in the theatres in Canada. We went to see the movie knowing nothing about it. I was a surprise as to the subject and I remember many people were shocked and repelled just by the subject. I was actually thrilled by the way the subject was approached. It wasn't vulgar, obscene or bawdy; on the contrary it was sensitive, almost romantic. One emphasizes with the main character, a girl who is attracted by dead persons. I felt seduced, almost hypnotised by many scenes.

All in all a very special and an excellent movie, but one which may not be seen superficially.
