Can't Nlame Jay North Jay North For Trying
29 August 2023
When this hit the drive-in, my then wife wanted to see it so I was wiling to go because she and I grew up with Dennis The Menace. He also had a successful series called Maya.

As I remember it, Jay North seemed a bit uncomfortable but I guess he felt if he wanted to stay an actor this was the price to pay. As I noted, he clearly wanted to stay in the business which is not easy to continue his career after having been a successful child actor. I agree with another observer that the ending of The Teacher stunk. I saw a number of movies in the 70's that had a shock ending. One of his contemporaries, Johnny Crawford also tried to do it and he also looked very uncomfortable.

Both of them obviously felt the need to get as far away from their established careers. Both found ways to move on and appeared to have a satisfying life. In Johnny Crawford's case, he joined the military and served honorably.

Both of them had bumps along the way so do we. It appears the they both kept their sanity. Jay North became a corrections officer which is an honorable career since I am a retired corrections officer. Johnny Crawford recently passed away but his last movie was to raise attention to Alzheimer's which he was suffering from. It looks like Jay North retired from corrections and moved on very well. It is too bad both of them did not get the professional help necessary to move on the next stage of acting.

Hitchcock Would Be Proud
4 June 2023
I had to log in after seeing this movie. One I started watching it, I could not let go. With the exception of having to watch it over two days due to time constraints, I had the feeling that I was watching a movie directed by the Master, Alfred Hitchcock. It kept me at the edge of my seat. Kenneth Branagh would have made Hitchcock proud and he (Branagh) is certainly in the same level . This is not to take anything away from either of these geniuses. This movie also I find to be a worthy salute to the film noir tradition of the 1940's and 1950's. The music score was also faithful to genre. This is a genre that I often enjoy watching. Well done to everyone involved.

War of the Worlds (1988–1990)
Hard To Watch
12 February 2023
I remember this series from 1988. That was before VCR's (remember them) and I worked a lot of evening shifts at that time. I may have missed some episodes so maybe I did not catch critical parts of the story flow.

About the only thing I remember about it was a cigar smoking female alien which was very unusual then. Also the Martians were shadowy and hard to get familiar with as characters.

I enjoy scify on tv and in the movies but I finally had to give up on this show since it was so difficult to watch and keep up with the plots. I think it had a lot of subplots which were also hard to keep up with. The only name actor in it that I was aware of was the late Jared Martin.

I think some times the writers cannot keep up with where the subplots are going. Thank God scify series and movies have improved a lot since then. I guess everyone has to start somewhere.

Blair Witch Project
18 January 2023
I don't know if there is a connection but this movie but it puts me in the mind of The Blair Witch Project and I am not finished with it. It definitely will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what is coming next. However I don't think I will have nightmares (I hope). It may have plot issues but I can't fault the acting. I saw Blair Witch Project with a then girlfriend who loved horror movies and I am sure she has seen it.

Having Kathleen Quinlan and John Schneider probably helped get financing and insurance to make it happen. Except for R rated language and some erotic scenes I would have probably taken my kids to see it after age 13 if I had any kids.

Early Edition (1996–2000)

Missed Fisher Stevens
10 December 2022
Early Edition was one of the shows I tried to never miss. After Fisher Stevens left, It was not the same. There are some shows that when a central character leaves, the connections among characters is disrupted and never recovers. Early Edition was one of those shows. I am going to make a list about such shows some day. It was bad enough his leaving but some genius decided to retool the show and that made it worse. This is not a slam against any of the cast members but I felt the Chemistry was not there.

It was amusing how Fisher Stevens was always trying to get the paper to do stock trades ahead of time. It was really amusing the time he did get the paper and after he made his trades, the SEC came knocking on his door and he had quite a time explaining that one.

This is a show that could maybe be brought back in some way allowing for the updating of the media involved. I am going to have to catch the teruns some day.

Not Bad At All
29 July 2022
This movie was more than I expected when I saw it awhile back. It was certainly worth seeing again and I will see it again sometime. It was head and above what other independent productions were which is why I look for the independent productions. Also, I have enjoyed the performances of Matt McCoy.

It appeared to have a budget that shows that people believe on this movie put up the money to show their interest. The acting, writing, and directing were top notch.

It had a nod toward the spaghetti westerns and Tombstone. Not the sashes some of the gun hands wore. The costuming and appearance of the performers was pretty historically accurate. However they went over the line on how the women dressed when they rode out to take care of business. The same was also in Gang of Roses.

There were women in the Old West who had to take care of business and they were not embarrassed to switch their skirts to pants and the attire needed to get the job done.

Well done everyone.

Better Than Expected
24 June 2022
I try to have an open mind when approaching such a movie as this. If there is no one I recognize I get curious. It usually does not take long to see if it is a low budget production but I will still check it out. I am pleasantly surprised by this one. For a low budget movie, the location was very good and so were the production values. It flows smoothly so I am fine with the direction nd writing. A lot of the actors don't a lot of projects behind them but you could have fooled me. I think a lot of them have a future in this business if they keep working hard at it. Good job and good luck.

You have got to be kidding me.
14 June 2022
Is there some rating below one star? I have seen some pretty pathetic movies that I bailed out on post haste but I plead guilty to wasting about 20 minutes on this piece of trash.

I did not stick around to see the appearance of Lorenzo Llamas. I like a lot of his materiel but he must have needed the money pretty bad, did it for a hoot, or owed someone a favor. I bet he does not claim this on his resume'. I hope this did not damage any beginner actors' future careers.

Better luck next time.

Best Western
2 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This has to be the best western ever made and I have seen it many times and will also watch it again. I rented the sequel, The Return of Josey Wales and was very disappointed with it. Michael Parks was a good actor but it is hard to get into a sequel that I don't think had any of the original actors from the first on

In addition to Clint Eastwood, I have have to give a shout out to John Vernon. He really impressed me as Fletcher whom Josey Wales thought had betrayed him. No way could Josey Wales have known that Fletcher was betrayed by the madman Captain Redlegs and then was drafted to help find him. The most touching scene was at the end when they finally met again, both agreed that it was time to end it and move on. Josey Wales said " we all lost a little in the d--- war".

Rest in peace Mr. Vernon.

Not That Bad
6 May 2022
Bruce Willis is remaking Die Hard but he is the bad guy this time. I have seen worse. Seeing that he is having to retire now for health reasons, he is starting to take more subdued roles like Steven Seagal is. Job well done Bruce. Best wishes.

The Rebel: Miz Purdy (1961)

Very Impressive
25 January 2022
This episode was very impressive because it was different in at least two ways from westerns of that period.

I have always had respect for women who played strong characters without having to diminish a man to be strong.

Ms. Purdy showed that she was capable of pulling her weight when it came to the battle.

Johnny showed realism in having to reload during the fight. Nick Adams over time shows to me to have been an underrated actor who could have had more success if he had gotten better breaks.

.Well done by all.

The Serpent (2020)

Better Than Expected
27 November 2021
Everyone has a right to their opinion and I often check some of the critiques before watching a movie. I try not to let such critiques affect my opinion. The Serpent is better than a lot of the movies of this genre. I discovered that it is a movie that I had to focus totally on to keep up with the plot. It presented as an American made movie but has all of the looks of a movie made in Europe. The thing to do if you watch it try not to get distracted unless you halt if for a period because it is easy to lose track of what is going on. I give it a 7 because a good job was done by all.

Better Than Most
12 November 2021
I am a fan of westerns. I am always ready to check out independent westerns and I also have to admit not being able to stay long with some of them since these is clear lack of experience in the acting and some other elements. I am often pleasantly surprised to find some that are pretty good and have actors with experience who know what they are doing. This the second surprise in a few days. The other one being named Scalped. This one shows very good acting from participant who have a respectable amount of experience. A message to those whose movies I had to bail out of, keep working at it since experience is the best teacher.

Still Remember
9 October 2021
When I saw this movie I had no idea what I was getting into but once I started watching it I had to stay with it until the end. I kept wonder what was going to happen next so it held my attention all the way. Life is full of frustrations and days when one just can't catch a break. Most of us would never think of striking out like he did but one can appreciate his frustration of going through a day when it seems the bad guys always win. When I finished it, the movie could only end like it did.

I don't mean any disrespect toward Tuesday Weld but I hope she was made up that way for the part she played and she did it well. I was shocked by her appearance and hope she is in good health and enjoying her retirement.

Fond Memory

Warning: Spoilers
This was a good show when most of what we had to choose from were the alphabet networks and cable and satellite TV was just getting started.

That is where I first became aware of David Morse and have followed his work since then.

I am a man of faith and he was a character who showed that he prayed and showed reverence when it was appropriate. I wish the show had gone on longer but wrapped up but if I remember correctly his police record was cleared so that was about the end of the show. This might be a show that could be rebooted.

I guess tastes change because there was a dynamite show in the early 60's about two guys who travelled the country and helped people when they stopped somewhere. It was Route 66. I will say Michael Landon did repeat the premise with Highway to Heaven and it was also repeated with Touched By An Angel so it can be done.

Interesting
11 September 2021
I was not expecting a lot when I started this movie and I was not disappointed. The thing that I appreciated was getting to see Victor Sen Yung in a different part. I remember him in some Charlie Chan movies and also Bonanza. I see he did a lot of stuff but I did not get those parts. I will try to check some of them out.

It was also interesting to see Gene Roth doing work beyond his parts in Three Stooges episodes.

This is better than a lot of material than what one would often see as the second half of a double feature at drive in theaters years ago.

Should have lasted longer
8 September 2021
I was married to a woman at the time who enjoyed comedy. I never have been crazy about the 30 minute sitcoms and feel less so today. This one did appeal to me but it ended too soon to get started.

As for Robert Mitchum, I enjoyed most of his work and a little jewel that gets overlooked is when he played a rebel priest in a spaghetti western called "The Wrath Of God". No matter what part he played, he was always Robert Mitchum. He did it his way even playing a priest. In this movie he was joined by two other colorful characters, Frank Langella and Victor Buono and they did not get in each other's way.

Someone once asked him something like, how did he become a successful actor to which he replied, " Show up on time, know your lines, and stand where they tell you to". He also once said it beats working.

Rest in peace Mr. Mitchum and thank you for giving us a life time of good entertainment.

Lost its Direction
5 September 2021
I agree with some of the other reviewers that the first season was top notch. I am not a prude but appreciate the gritty reality of the period. I am a retired corrections officer and it makes me appreciate how far in most directions that law enforcement has come. I have said many times in different posts that it is not wise to just a prior era by the standards of today. It was a brutal time that a lot of people did what they felt had to be done and often their superiors looked the other way or tacitly approved it.

A lot of those things would not be acceptable today and should not be.

I also felt the second season lost its direction in relation to the first season and it lost my interest in the second season. I hope Tom Weston-Jones has continued success with his career.

Maybe someone with the backing and talent should try again with this show and learn from the mistakes with the second season. I would also like the get the soundtrack of the opening theme music.

One Remarkable Movie
18 August 2021
Tyler Perry was a good choice anointed by Morgan Freeman to pass on the torch. I wonder if a sequel was planned but did not happen. Too bad. I have to say this was the most convincing performance I have seen by Matthew Fox since Lost. It is a puzzle to me that having been the lead actor in Lost that his career appears to have run out of gas. His last screen appearance to date was Bone Tomahawk. I don't know if he has abandoned his career, personal preference to do something else, or personal or family issues. Unless he has made one of these choices, I hope he decides to give it another try in the future. Very good movie and good luck Mr. Fox.

A Good Start
16 August 2021
I watched The Runners last night and I have just finished No Man's Land. This is obviously a Texas based production company with a group of people who do not have the experience that other companies and actors have. Everyone has to start somewhere. I will not name names but more than one successful actor started this way. They are producing their own movies rather than compromising with established producers to get their product produced and released. I hope they have continued success and I will be following their progress. I like westerns and I have seen a lot of independent westerns that are a lot worse. Good movie for what they had to work with. Keep up the good work.

Good Movie Except For One Item
6 August 2021
Striking Range does deliver and if you are an action fan like me, you will not be disappointed. I have been binge watching action movies and this one ranks top notch. I gave it a 9 except for one thing; I felt some of the music was distracting and it seemed to me to not fit with the movie. All and all, good job everyone.

Still Got The Moves
30 July 2021
I have to agree that Steven Seagal is overweight and needs to get back in shape for his health and career. He has an advantage that he produces most of his movies. Of course he uses stunt doubles when necessary due to his condition.

I am no expert on such matters as his martial arts moves. I have been binge watching his movies from the beginning. One has to give it that he was 64 when he did this one and I wish I had been able to move like that when I was 64. He is 68 now and still out there cranking them out when a lot of other actors have retired or limit their performances to what their health and age will permit. Of course the moves aren't as sharp now and knowing how to live healthy and tune his body up to be in better shape would return some of the old stuff but one has to make certain concessions to age.

He may be reluctant to hire a personal trainer to help him but he would greatly benefit from it. Hiring a personal trainer turned Brian Wilson around although it looks like the trainer took advantage of him and the family had to perform tough intervention but Mr. Wilson is still here. Elvis Presley may have lived awhile longer if his pride had permitted him to take this lifesaving step.

I digress, I hope Mr. Seagal will take such steps and we his fans will be supporting him all the way.

What a Bummer
21 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This will be a short review because I remember a lot of this movie and that was 50 years ago. I still like to root for the good guy, such as Rommel is. It was one of those movies of that era that could not resist doing a shock ending. If I remember correctly, the end is coming and Rommel has just vanquished the bad guy. Rommel is walking away when the bad guy reaches up and shoots Rommel in the back. That really stinks. I still cheer for the good guy.
