Dom za vesanje (1988)
Fantastic movie with touching story lines
Time of the gypsies is a depressed movie filling with a dark tone. Closer to most of the audience in working class, the story background is surround a poor family facing with a lot of humanity problem.
I really like this movie as it contain a lot of moral problem and the struggling between money and love such as Perhan's uncle Merdzan hang up his grandmother's house because of lack of money, Perhan and Azra were not allowed to marry because of money, and the seduction of the quick-cash on Perhan. Every situation represented a struggle and a chance to show one's virtue. In fact, those situations happened quite often in our daily life. Seeing the story of Perhan, Emir reminds me the time of making wrong decisions in the past and causing endless of troubles to my friends and parents.
When Perhan was suffering from his uncle and Azra's mother, I felt the loneliness and the lack of support from the world. This is so truth that, in the world, people won't help you. You are always on you own when you grow. If you are poor, you were forced to become independent more younger than the others. The sadness and the lack of love have impacted me. With a little anger to the world and anger to the limited ability that one man could do.
The music in the movie has played a role to empower the sad tone to a higher level. I really like the unique style of the songs and soundtracks on the background. Not only it addressed a cultural feeling to the movie, but also the melody and the tone of the song have match the tone of the scenes. Often times, I was moved not by the scene and the acting, but by the music behind the screen matching to the story.
Idi i smotri (1985)
It is a movie that reflect the ugliest side of War
Come and see is a tragedy movie filling with a gray tone both on the screen and the story. Via Florya and Glasha's sad experience, Elem has given audience the ruthlessness and impacts of war addressed on the Jews in WWII.
To me, the relationship between Florya and Glasha is meaningless to the story because of Florya's reaction looks like there is no struggle in his when losing his love. In the movie, Florya's has been dreaming as a warrior. He met his love at the beginning of the movie. Perhaps, that relationship is not very deep. This movie, in the middle point, has created a weird feeling that Florya seem never ever hesitated to leave his love to fight back Nazi after he was under attack at the warehouse.
The most impressive scene in the movie would be the burning warehouse. It shifted my anger the most via the scene showing the cruel of the Nazi army. Burning people, torturing, and raping the women have angered me. Couple with the applause and laugh after the warehouse was fully burned, the scene has greatly expressed the ugly, cruel, and the truth side of the Nazi or war. I got to admit I even was inspired to trying to get into the screen and beat them with my hands.
As those soldiers were caught up at the end, they were all blaming each other and finding excuse even they all know what they have done was really wrong. The action that one of the soldiers poured the oil he was given to his teammates has impressed me the ugliness of war and immorality within those soldiers. As we are told long ago that war has no wrong or right. This movie, however, is seem giving out a message to mirror a phenomenon that war is ugly and wrong when people don't respect lives.
Le fantôme de la liberté (1974)
This is a breakthrough
This is the weirdest movie with lot of humors. With the style to keep creating the environment to mislead everybody, Luis Bunuel humorously expressed his ideas and, on some level, complains to us. The filming style is somehow a stunt to me as I don't really get the whole story at all.
As the film seem has no main story or characters but all different stories are connecting via different person traveling from scene to scene. Although I don't like the story as it is not actually considered a story at all to me, I do feel the fun within the transition. The phantom of liberty, to some extend, reminds me of the movie "Babel." Similarly, "Babel" contains a few different stories connecting with a bullet. Compared to "The Phantom of liberty," "Babel" is a movie that makes more sense to me.
In this movie, the parts that I like would be the humorous manner to show audience the ideas of Luis. With the crazy ideas like the sniper scene or the sexual scene in the hotel, Luis has changed the normal manner to express surrealism. Also, the ideas such as the policemen making fun with the professors or the opposite usage of dinning and using the restroom, somehow seemingly remind me of a question, "at what time and what reason, why we are following the same rule since the day we were born?" Although I am not hoping to use the toilet together at the dinner table, this indeed should not be a wrong thing to do.
La otra conquista (1998)
Very meaningful movie.
Via a gloomy tone, "The other conquer" has delivered a sense of struggling as well as the desperate hope to me. As an international movie, although the subject normally is not considered interesting to most to audiences, the storyline in fact shift my emotion with the continuous depressing events happened to Topiltzin.
To me, the struggle on Topiltzin when pretending to be mad in order to reach his belief or his goddess is profoundly impressed. Similar to the life we have been facing when suffering from torture, we often choose to protect ourselves instead of what we love or believe in. Because of the similarity, it triggered my anger when seeing Topiltzin, with the brave to protect his principle, being forced to accept what he does not like. Along with the torturing and his friends' betrayal, Topiltzin's pretended madness just made me strongly feel the unfairness. Until the death of Topiltzin, however, the ending turned out to be a sad one. Perhaps, this is the message that Carrasco wants to tell us. The world is not always run in a justice way. Sometime or often times, it is not fair at all. However, we still need to respect our principle or others' as it is what keep us want to live our life.
