99 Homes (2014)
So it is true what they say about real estate agents!
I watched this movie in July, 2016 and what a surprisingly enjoyable watch it was too. Good performances from the leading actors (Shannon and Garfield) and a story line that was different but also real given the recent global financial collapse. A good twist fairly early on in the plot holds one's attention and Garfield was outstanding as a man torn between the love for his mother and son and the need to sell his soul to the devil to make money and give his mum and son a good home. It is well worth a watch. Shannon is excellent as the soul-less, hard- as-nails Realtor who'll do anything to make money. It makes you think what some people will do to make a buck regardless of the consequences. Some moving, touching scenes where families are about to be thrown out of their homes.
True Grit (2010)
Somewhat Disappointing
I loved the original True Grit and was looking forward to this remake, especially with Jeff Bridges playing Rooster Cogburn. However, I found that throughout the film the script attempted to make the actors repeat almost the exact lines from the original film. This made me focus on comparing John Wayne with Jeff Bridges and Bridges was a pale imitation of Wayne in my view. Couldn't the scriptwriters have varied their script from the original? Same for the character Ned Pepper, originally played by Robert Duvall. Some of the acting appeared a little stilted possibly because they seemed to be speaking their lines almost verbatim from the original film. Josh Brolin in particular seemed a little uncomfortable with his lines. Just my opinion but disappointing. However, Hailee Steinfield was superb as Mattie.
