Something's Gotta Give (2003)
Unexpected...?
Finally got around to watching what I always thought was a rom com classic- I mean Jack and Diane? Please. How could this be anything but delightfully warm and charming? Don't get me wrong, those feelings do emerge at times, but only because we all have some connection with Jack Nicholson's lovable smooth talking, we adore Diane, and we're putty for Keanu and that voice of his. Anything other than the actors themselves? Wiiildly fell short.
Honestly I don't understand the direction they wanted to take with this. It felt obvious they wanted Erica's character to be this stick up her bum, uptight monstress, which would clash perfectly with Harry's playboy, but then fully gave that direction up 25 minutes into the film for no apparent reason? Erica's character didn't have the fieriness that we needed to make this dynamic be what it should have been, and what I'm suspecting the writers originally intended. It's the way they had her laugh and smile at all the wrong times that felt contradictory to her character's values and essence. And I'm talking way before she developed any feelings for Harry, so it isn't because she'd been "softening because she was falling in love". The jump from random stranger in her house to enjoyable friend was painfully underdeveloped. Don't get me started on the crying and pining.. none of it fit! Hard to believe a woman wrote this. I could've sworn this was the epitome of an middle age woman written by a clueless man. Anyway... it's not an awful movie or anything, but I could never put this in any rom com classic category. Just disappointing because how could you not make something brilliant with this cast?! Was hoping for sweetly cheeky, warming and witty but at best it's giving slight side eye.. oh well!
Ang-ma-reul bo-at-da (2010)
Unsure why this is a favorite
What was the point of this? It painfully missed its mark of being some anguished deep psychological mind bender. Aggressively mediocre in substance even though it tried so hard. You'll see when you watch it - there's just no real plot?
I'm convinced the people rating this movie high just have a gore/torture fetish... cause there's nothing else this movie really did well (acting not included). What the hell else are you rating it high for? Just the actor performances? Writers just hide the fact that they don't have a real plot behind bloody shock factor. The whole thing is simply lacking. Had so much potential here smh.
Orphan: First Kill (2022)
Truly moronic writing
This movie has been solidified in my list of the worst movies I've ever seen. I'm so confused how it could be this bad?
You expect us to believe a mom decided to keep a murderous psychopath in the house JUST to keep her husband happy? Nobody was making her do that.. Esther didn't blackmail her or anything.. and it didn't seem like her intention to raise this fake daughter for the rest of her life.. so her plan was to give it some time and then have Esther die somehow? So now having the dad go through his daughter getting kidnapped, found, then die is better than the truth that some woman was faking things to trick them? When the whole point was to keep him happy? It's not like having the dad find out Esther was a fraud would suddenly reveal their secret.. IT WASN'T BLACKMAIL. Do these writers not understand that Tricia didn't have to tell Esther anything about what she and her son did....
I have no words to describe this storyline other than purely moronic. It's that stupid. Who are these writers? I'm concerned for their mental well-being... the utter stupidity is actually offensive.
