Ordinary People (1980)
The Greatest family drama film of all time
The most underrated film of all time. Could you imagine making the mother of the story the villain. Talk about taking a chance! Next to Elliott in ET, Timothy Hutton gives the greatest juvenile performance of all time. I mean come on! He won an Oscar for it. The ending is incredibly. It comes from out of nowhere. This movie could have easily been a "melodrama". But it is not in any way. This movie hurts to the core of the viewer. It beat Raging Bull to the best Picture Oscar. Why? Because unlike Raging Bull this movie makes you feel. Deeply. When I saw it twice in 1980 there was not a dry eye in the house. No one talked while leaving the theater. Mary Tyler Moore was so brave to play this role. Think of the chance she was taking!
By the way, the music is incredible.
Better than Kramer vs. Kramer or American Beauty any day.
Enter the Void (2009)
Awesome
Like no other movie, and that is really saying something. An otherworldly experience. Sad but also revelatory. Let's be honest, this has to be one of the deepest films ever made. The scope, the reach is just amazing.
Wuthering Heights (1939)
Awesome
One of the best book to movie trasfers ever. An almost perfect movie. Can you ever imagine any other actors in the roles? It beat out Gone with the Wind for best picture at the New York Film Critics awards in 1939! Merle Oberon didn't get nominated for Best Actress that year, but there was alot of competition. Maybe Olivier's best performance? He was required to be very unlikable and really put his career in jeopardy by playing the part in this way. Vivian Leigh wanted the part at first but the studio didn't want her.
