All Around the Town (2002)
The book was better
It was an okay movie, but they didn't get in depth enough and I felt like the book was so much better that it makes me want to read the book over to see if it's my imagination. But it's better than a lot of things, and I watched the whole thing so that gives it some definite advantages over a lot of things. The characters seemed shallow and their acting seemed forced. That was disappointing. It only skims the surface of the book, which I was disappointed in. I really liked the ending though, and that was a major plus in it's favor. Overall I think it's better than some of the other books made into movies and I look forward to seeing some of her others.
Annie (1982)
They are cruel to those kids
I was shocked to see this movie after at least 15 years. I guess I must have liked it okay before so I bought it so that my kids could see it. I'm just glad I previewed it before they watched it. I have several complaints about this movie, but the two that bother me the absolute most are: 1. Miss Hannigan is drunk the whole movie. Maybe that in itself isn't a reason to hate the movie, but I was appalled about that and the fact that she tried to jump every man that walked into the building. I didn't think that was fitting for a children's movie at all.
2. She is abusive to those kids. Hearing her name calling, watching her shove them, forcing them to work to the degree that she does- it all makes my blood run cold. I am shocked and appalled that nobody has complained about how abusive this movie is.
I guess my kids won't be watching this one, my husband agrees and I didn't even bother watching the end of it. For a society that has come as far as it has I can't believe that this movie doesn't bother anybody else. I realize they were trying to make a point across, and made her like that on purpose, but it bothers me.
Heaven & Hell: North & South, Book III (1994)
I'm pretending the 3rd one doesn't exist
I had the first two parts on tape, so when we were in the process of converting over to DVD I was thrilled when they finally brought it out. And I didn't know that they made another sequel. I started reading the original book, but I had seen the movie too many times to really enjoy it, so I didn't finish the book. I realize they are bound by the author's wishes or what they wrote, but they ruined the movie. I am so disappointed I don't even acknowledge it's existence. I only give it a 1 because I can't get even less. First they have Bent. Now how in the world did he survive that blast anyway? There isn't a chance in the world that he should have because that barn was in complete flames and it BLEW UP, he wasn't even scarred. Then he turns around and kills Orrie. He is the main character of the movie and I considered him critical. As if that weren't enough, he goes out, kills Constance, then George and Madeline get married. What's with that? I just felt like the whole movie was a farce, something to pacify the North & South fans that were waiting. All it did was ruin the others so now I have to block my mind when I watch them. And they changed Charles, who may not have been my favorite character, but without the other guy playing the part it wrecked it further. I keep the 3rd set, but only because it belongs with it, but I DON'T watch it, and if my husband puts it in (even though he didn't like it either) I leave the room.
The Prince & Me II: The Royal Wedding (2006)
They should have used the same actors
The storyline was good. I thought that they had a good idea with them feeling the pressures of royalty and being in the public's eye. But I felt like they ruined it by changing every single person in it except for Eddy. He was the only one from the 1st movie. It's bad enough when they replace one or two people, especially when they are key characters, but I felt like they went too far. They also seemed to have removed his sister from existence. If your brother is being married, you would be there and they not only didn't have her in it, but they didn't even mention her! My husband and I loved the first one and were deeply disappointed in the 2nd one. It just didn't have the charm of the original movie.
License to Kill (1984)
A timeless message to everyone on consequences of our actions.
I picked this movie up because it looked pretty good and Denzel Washington was in it. I was pleasantly surprised with it, though when I realized how old it was, I didn't think I would enjoy it. It turned out that they used Denzel Washington as if he were a main character, but he was barely in it. However, it caught your attention in the horribleness of driving drunk. It should be shown to all kids getting ready to get their licenses and what can happen if you do drive while under the influence. A little depressing, the death of their daughter is very gripping and made me think of my own kids and the potential dangers, but definitely worth watching.
The Greatest American Hero (1981)
I thought the show was great.
The show was about a high school teacher who was given a supersuit but lost the directions. He hooked up with an FBI agent and he was always helping solve FBI cases with his friend/antagonist Bill Maxwell. I enjoyed the show but I thought the original group of kids was the best. I was very disappointed when they took it off the air and when they decided to finish off the series years later I thought they destroyed it by having him give the suit to a save the whales-ecologist (that simply didn't fit the show). Sure, they were almost always having problems with the Russians, but we're talking the '80s. A good clean show that is okay for kids to watch because it isn't full of today's sex obsession issues.
