Nerukku Ner (1997)
2/10
A masterclass in padding runtime
2 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
It takes special talent to ensure that there is no good story to get a good movie out of a promising cast.

The film begins with an interesting discussion on marriage and turns out to be a confession of cheating, resulting in a couple's separation that leads to the brothers-in-law beginning to dislike each other.

And from then onwards it goes even more downhill. There are way too many instances of these two ending up in head-on-clashes.

The film focuses on the cast rather than story, shoehorning in the separated couple's daughter when it is clear that the characters written for the cast aren't able to carry the story forward at all, and the film turns into a competition of the two sides of the little girl's family competing against each other in their incompetence in taking care of a child.

The two heroines have absolutely no role.

The climax proves the writers' dedication to turn this joke of a script into a film, establishing the protagonists as being incapable of spotting a vehicle whose number plate is in front of their faces for a very long time.

It seems more like a film written in fear of disappointing fans of either protagonist than one intended at giving a good cinematic experience.

The only redemption is the music, with Deva sir's composition preventing this film from being forgotten. And, sure, it was nice seeing Vijay and Suriya together on screen.

Could have been so much more
28 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Does not fail as an entertainer, but it could've done so much more. The film built up two characters in a very organic way, cutting them out from the same fabric, with their choices being the true factor in deciding which way each one went.

Two potential directions could have been taken:

1. Rajiv growing up slightly more conflicted but not necessarily downright evil. The flash back sealed the deal with that, but it still makes sense that they had to slightly rush that character development so that they could build up to the final clash.

2. A second, even more interesting take could have been Anisha being saved by Chozhan, and their clash coming from a totally different place.

For characters that are so alert, it seems silly that they couldnt foresee that someone could have planned to assassinate Rajiv. A lot of other scenes felt incomplete - a forced love story that didn't feel satisfying and Rajiv becoming a villain feeling a little incomplete.

Paari asking them to be "best friends" outside of the competition didn't come into the picture at all.

The Last of Us: When We Are in Need (2023)
Season 1, Episode 8
10/10
(Kinda) The first time I teared up in The Last of Us
22 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This series has been great so far - captivating, fresh, grounded and a lot of rally positive things, but I haven't been so overwhel - scratch that (I forgot that extremely emotional one which also I rated 10/10), it's been several episodes since I've been so overwhelmed with emotion that I found myself tearing up.

For a theme as simple as a Zombie Apocalypse, The Last of Us has found unique ways of showing us fresh perspectives of a utopian world in snippets that weave together into the long trail that Joel and Ellie leave behind as they walk across the face of the United States.

The bond between the two main characters has been building up beautifully so far and the ending of this gruesome episode is undoubtedly the crown jewel of that. Storytellers should really be taking notes.

I see no political agenda, no lecturing, nothing that makes me squirm - except for the disturbing visuals you get now and then of course - this is just a series that I can let my guard down and immerse myself into.

Thank you so much for making this. The two Game of Thrones actors have really got another brilliant platform to shine brightly upon - one where the writers hopefully hold onto the passion for their creation until the very end of making this show.

Sita Ramam (2022)

An epic love story that does most characters justice
7 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I would've given it a 10 - I really would have. I'd defend the length of the movie with every inch of myself, because the characters needed establishment and depth.

A story that I'd almost compare with Veer Zaara for the pure, flushed out justice to emotions and a larger than life, epic portrayal of love.

The relationship between Ram and Vishnu seemed to have been handled with grace - until the past part.

However, in wanting to have an old fashioned villain and wanting to ensure that no sensitive sentiments were hurt, an Indian Soldier was shown to be a traitor. That part is unforgivable. I do not want to get into any other debates about hurting sentiments but to show an Indian film not treating the Indian army with even as much respect that it treats another country's army is just sad. I'd have looked past anything else.

The film still gets an 8 from me because it is that good in every other way.

Zakir Khan: Tathastu (2022 TV Special)
10/10
A tribute in Zakir's craft
11 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
An artist would give a tribute to someone they love, in their artform. A singer would sing, a poet would compose, and a painter would paint, for that is the language of their heart.

But who would've thought the same thing could be done with an artform as obscure as comedy?

Zakir Khan outdoes himself in this sincere tribute to a man he has admired and learnt from in life, wrapping it up in content that is not just comedy but a journey of emotions.

I don't know if I laughed more or cried more. I just want to give Zakir a hug, there's no way else for a human to express to another that he understands. Watch this if you can give yourself to it completely.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Full Boyle (2014)
Season 1, Episode 17
9/10
Jake's a great friend to Boyle too
15 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I watch episodes of this series repeatedly in spite of the slightly obvious messages and its overall predictability, for its wholesomeness. One thing I might've possibly had a complaint about until episode 16 was that it felt like Jake was taking Boyle for granted.

This episode proved me wrong and took the wholesomeness I like a step further, when Jake is ready to make sacrifices and goes out of the way to help out his best friend.

The best moment, for me, was how he did his best to not fall for Vivian's friend, the Die Hard fan, and ensured to keep his focus on ensuring that Boyle doesn't scare Vivian off. I honestly wish Jake had called this lady in a future episode, perhaps instead of Rosa's friend, Katie.

The way Jake finally realized that Boyle wouldn't scare Vivian after all, and does a 180 in fully letting Boyle express his love for Vivian is one of my most favourite moments of this show. It shows that Jake is ready to be the friend that Boyle needs, especially when it comes to being the wingman in Boyle's love life.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Bachelor/ette Party (2018)
Season 5, Episode 19
4/10
A ten year bachelor party plan ruined??
10 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This one's a little personal. I felt terribly about how they took this episode forward, and am wondering whether they even had a proper plan to begin with.

I don't care what justification Jake gives, they had no right to spoil the whole plan made by Boyle. That's not how they treated the friendship so far, all the character growth so far went down the season in this one.

Plus, I'd have liked to see what Charles had actually planned for this whole bachelor party, rather than anything else. A forced explanation at the end with Jake saying they'd have liked to be with Charles rather than looking for him, was just not convincing.

Lucifer: Goodbye, Lucifer (2021)
Season 6, Episode 9
10/10
Extremely heartwarming
19 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It's good to know that though some aspects of the plot aren't nearly as serious as they could have been, this show genuinely respects its characters. I'm glad they took the time to do this.

The suspense is just frustrating at this point - and there seems to be too little time to do justice to the weight of the matter, that's my complaint about these few episodes, but the positives significantly outweigh the cons.

Lucifer's moments with Linda, Ella and most of all, Mazikeen were just fantastic. Take notes, Game of thrones, this is how you close a series. I always felt Lucifer didn't acknowledge Maze enough, and am glad he finally did.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: PB&J (2021)
Season 8, Episode 5
5/10
A fun episode that ended horribly
21 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
*Spoilers for previous episodes also*

Jake and Doug are amazing together. To me, Boyle will always be Jake's best friend, but there's something wonderful about Jake and Doug's friendship. They both acknowledge it and do justice to it - and most of all, it looks amazing on the episodes these two appear in together.

PB&J could have been the most fun among these episodes, given that that's what it was entirely about, but it ended miserably.

Jake has had a wonderful character arc, nearly always becoming a better person that he's been. There's the occasional weird episode like Captain Kim but that can be forgiven. What I like about this series is that the detectives have a lot of fun and good around, but like Jake says in Nutriboom, he's got a huge moral compass. That's something fundamental to who Jake is, and they threw all that down the drain in forcing a rhyme out of this episode on the pretext of giving a poetic ending.

I cannot forgive them for writing Jake this way. In some sense, it was worse than how they wrote Amy inn Casecation.

It's like they went out of their way to write a bad one
13 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Hold and Jake were completely out of character. Jake usually starts off being a little petty, becomes aware of himself and learns his lesson soon. Here, on the pretext of taking Holt's side he was too harsh on Captain Kim. All the character development they'd done on Jake went down the drain, it was utterly out of character.

I'd have liked to see more of Captain Kim.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Dillman (2020)
Season 7, Episode 9

Loved it!
15 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
JK Simmons was amazing, as expected, and his performance for right into the breezy time of the series and its main characters, but what I really want to talk about is Boyle.

Brooklyn 99 has often tried to give Boyle his due credit, with Jake realizing that he's a bad secondary, with episodes like Gintars and the like. He's a wonderful friend not only to Jane, but to Rosa and Gina in particular, and the others in general, but I always wanted to see him have a nice, big win. My first preference would have been seeing Boyle win one of the Jimmy Jab Games which, I wish, had featured in as many episodes as the Halloween Heist did. I'd have at least liked to see him win a Halloween Heist and proudly explain how he did.

But this episode did justice to the man that reflects the emotions of the audience, and one of my most favourite characters of this series in a genuine, honest way. I loved that Jake wasn't childish about Boyle being offered the task force, and wanted to ensure that Bottle wasn't going to give it up for his sake.

This is one episode I'd rewatch even more than the others.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Show Me Going (2018)
Season 5, Episode 20
10/10
Heart touching episode
27 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Brooklyn Nine Nine has been seeing subtle examples in being there for people, stressing on the importance of mental health and redefining the right way to do things in the midst of its cheesy comedy, and midly obvious moral messages. This episode took a more serious tone and showed how much the people on the squad love each other.

I loved the moment between Rosa, Amy and Gina.

I just have one complaint. Why is Jake the only one who hugs Rosa at the end? Boyle and Terry love her equally. And Holt too.

Person of Interest: If-Then-Else (2015)
Season 4, Episode 11

Critics need to flex their expectations
12 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I see a lot of criticism of this particular episode.

I think, with a series like PoI with over a hundred episodes, avoiding monotony and keeping creativity alive can be a challenge, particularly when they've discovered a formula that works.

One of the ways to bring in variety is to change perspectives, to help understand the world they're showing us better, and, perhaps get a holistic view of it.

This episode, if anything, showed us what it's like to be The Machine.

That, to me, is just brilliant. The writers knew that one of their greatest strengths was the naming of these episodes and the title of this one is just perfect.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Sealing the Homunculus (2004)

It all pays off
29 February 2020
"Sealing the Homunculus" turned out to be a bit of everything - edge of the seat moments, true, genuine tear-jerking ones and a wonderful showdown for all that has happened on the show so far.

A truly rewarding watch. Can't wait to watch the end of the show.

A Cheesy, one sided
26 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This film was a lot of things but not a biopic. It looked like a blind, sycophantic fan's imagination of the life of a man, whose neither purpose nor journey was presented in a relatable manner.

It was a caricature of a hero, desperately attempting to paint a picture so much larger than life that it seems out of scale, discontinuous, highly questionable and marginally pretentious.

It seemed like a poor, childish superhero (hate myself for saying that, I love superheros and their movies are so realistic and sensible these days) movie designed for people to start worshipping the face of a man who is shown to have way too much clarity to be human. And that's not even the worst part. Other important political figures, neighbouring countries and a lot of other parties are shown in such poor light - caricatures again, but of one dimensional stupidity, hatred and selfishness and painted as stereotypes in with the annoying intention of making the audience like this man.

It would've been more enjoyable to see him falter as a man, to know his doubts, his mistakes - and the ways in which he chooses to atone for, or fix them.

The stars I am giving are for the makeup, for Vivek Oberoi's acting and for the music.

96 (II) (2018)

An experience served on a spoon
6 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
'96 isn't just a film. It isn't a mere love story, larger or smaller than life, it looked like pages of my diary - those pages that I'd find hard to turn to and look at, page filled with words that would break my soul, melted into a soothing tonic to slip a little easier down my throat that'd choke if I ever read them..

There have been sagas of love, requited and not, of love that has won and failed, films on live and even the questionable 'happily ever after' that follows, even ones that follow a failed love, to help one find meaning in life after it, but this one is medicine for the wounded heart, a means of ripping the bandage open, of letting the wound breathe, of letting the outside air kiss it to a gentle, nourishing recovery.. It is a journey to the past, and a journey within oneself, and will certainly overwhelm the gentle heart..

I felt, and I'm sure countless others would've felt too, that elements of this journey were taken from a very personal portion of my life. The footsteps in this film echoed sounds I thought only my shoes made..

Please watch it with an open mind, hold the film's hand as it walks you towards the sweet pain of the past, and you will see that sometimes, reliving something from a more wholesome perspective is all that is needed to soothe an aching heart..
