Tokyo Tribe (2014)
alotta good stuff
the rapping parts were good, fighting scenes mostly good, had a good ending. There were some kind of lame parts but only maybe twenty percent. It was impressive how the Japanese rapping was rhyming and the English translations rhymed as well. Another part I thought was really cool was how this karate school-girl's panties would be showing during her high kicks. This movie was a little reminiscent of Crow's Nest Zero but this was superior. Five years after the Shibuya riots, the Tribes of Tokyo have been enjoying a period of relative peace, until Kim and two other members of the Musashino Saru intrude on the territory of the Wu-Ronz in Bukuro. Mera, the leader of Wu-Ronz kills the three Saru, under the assumption that they were members of the Shibuya Saru. Two days later, after searching for who killed his friends, Musashino Saru member Kai runs into Mera. Old friends in their high school days, the two get into a confrontation that ends up leaving Tera, the leader of Musashino Saru, dead and setting the stage for violence between the Tribes.
Bill Cosby: Himself (1983)
eye opening insight into developmental influences
I decided to re-watch this performance in light of the recent accusations against Mr. Bill. I grew up on the first three Cosby albums, I-Spy, and Uptown Saturday Night. My impression of this work was just how masterfully intelligent Bill is. His comedy style is so unique that no one has been able to mimic it. We all must seem like children to him, putty in his hands that he can con and manipulate with ease. The part that seemed to give better understanding to the possibility that he may have developed deviant tendencies was when he was discussing what his parents were like. The thing that made we watch this was remembering how he described how his father would threaten to kill him, in a cold, detached voice, saying; "I brought you into this world so I can take you out." I have a background in psychology and understand how the environment created by one's relationship with their parents shapes the personality. The abusive maternal relationship combined with the cold emotionless paternal relationship goes a long way towards explaining how someone could develop a fetish for having sex with unconscious partners. He told stories about how his mother would savagely beat him on a regular basis. That pattern continued with the wife he chose for his own children. When this first came out, most white people such as myself followed political correctness to excuse this behavior as "cultural traditions." Most of us throughout society have grown and evolved to where we can now recognize that parents who sow violence will reap continued violence throughout society.
Muscle Beach Party (1964)
best of this genre
Just began watching as a goof, was expecting to lose interest. But ended up being well entertained by the goofy surfer tomfoolery, Italian muscle-man star. the Contessa was well played. Anette was disappointing but Frankie was in good form. The appearance of Stevie wonder singing "clap your hands" sealed the deal. Don Rickles is always a cool presence. And there was even a surprise appearance of Peter Lorre at the end. Of course I ended up fast forwarding through several boring musical numbers but having the power to ignore the boring parts gave the rest of the movie high praise from me for being pretty entertaining. Peace
Jîn (2013)
enchantingly beautiful actress and scenery
this lovely film moved me to post my first review. I usually prefer movies with lots of dialog. Turkish films generally don't have what I look for. Leaving the politics aside; I was spellbound by this character and the mountains were magnificent. This film was so moving that any criticisms I would have seem insignificant. The Kurdish cultural perspective was a nice refreshing point of view. The only movie I can think of to compare this to would maybe be "Into the wild." I would probably be happy to watch this actress doing just about anything. And the mountains of Turkey seem like a fairy-tale location. Thanks for letting me gush
