After watching episode 1 it was fault obvious that it written by a woman: all the male characters are weak and / or whiny; not sure why she wrote the mother as shouty and unstable. Apart from the laughable characterisation (apart from the slightly non-human doctor- she's rather good) what really breaks the suspension of disbelief is fundamental stuff like being able to hear the shuttle from the main ship as it approaches - yes it's sci-if and you can have FTL; no that does not meet you can hear in space. And on that note the little "witch" girl is completely motionless when she flinging people around with her "dreds"; really? The special effects and set are quite good; I'm not sure if it's bad acting or bad direction - probably the latter - the writing is definitely dubious. Let's see if anyone is learning on the job and it gets better.
