Free Rein (2017)
Lighthearted kids/family show
Enjoyable kids/family show with average to strong acting (Ben, Becky, later episodes Mia, Rosie stood out to me) and overall nice sets and costumes. It also features some beautiful shots & views.
The "horses solve everything" motto is rather cheesy and while I have no knowledge about horse riding and cannot comment on that, it seemed clear even to me that some situations were exaggerated to impossible. Furthermore there didn't seem to be enough adult supervision on the island.
Sometimes the plot can get confusing (How old is Marcus really? How old is everyone really? Do the characters not develop when it isn't summer?).
Some suspension of disbelief is required but then it is a fun, relaxing show.
The Rookie: Double Down (2022)
Enjoyable despite not everything being believable
Rosalind's escape: not sure how I feel about that.
First she had to find yet another twisted person to help her. I don't know if these people grow on trees, I'd really hope not, but this part I can ignore, even though my initial reaction was "but why would she help her?". The characters have similar questions and it is explained but I don't completely buy said explanation.
Secondly, is it standard procedure to have only one officer there for such a dangerous criminal? No idea how it works, but it seems like the entire plan would have crumbled had another officer simply been there. So if this is standard procedure maybe it's not very good procedure. And if it is not... weak plot device.
That being said, unlike others I have no issue with her escaping, perhaps only with the realism of how it happened, but I guess a prisoner escaping always takes some amount of luck. Therefore it is not a big issue for me.
As for the other storyline, I like Lucy & TIm undercover, but the operation is said to be this huge deal then gets resolved by the end of the episode... That was a little underwhelming.
All in all it was an enjoyable episode and it made me look forward to the next one.
Élite (2018)
Season 3
Good series and a solid season 3, probably better than the 2nd one.
Lucifer (2016)
Worth watching!
This show has a very interesting and unique premise in my opinion, though later on it becomes a bit of a cop show. Season 1 is great, season 2 is good, season 3 is honestly somewhat boring, but season 4 (after it was picked up by Netflix) is amazing again; overall, it's enjoyable and worth watching if you're looking for comedy/romance/fantasy.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017)
Fun.
The main point to take away from this review: it was FUN.
And possibly - for me - better than the last 2 movies or so - though admittedly it's been years since I've watched them - which is why the box office earnings seem surprising. It was somewhat easier to understand, in spite of still containing plenty of over-the-top fiction. I mean magic, curses etc are all nice and dandy but they somehow don't fit as well here as they would a film FOCUSED on magic, since there is no world-building, no real explanation of the made-up rules governing them, etc... they're just being served to us and we have to accept them. Personally I don't mind that greatly, though I understand why others might not: it leads to confusion, and even MORE difficulties in keeping up with the already convoluted plots. Either way, this installment was easier to wrap one's head around than some of the previous, at least in my opinion.
And, keeping in mind that this is what it is, a comedic family film, I believe it fulfills its purpose of entertaining, and it does not claim to be anything that it's not.
